The Jain family of Shahs built this palace in early eighteenth century. Manikchand Shah of the family helped Mughal Prince Farrukshiyar in his successful effort to become Mughal Emperor and was conferred the title 'Jagat Sheth' . The family was one of the richest in Asia and their power and wealth was at the highest at the time of Mahatab chand, who was contemporary to Nawab Alivardi Khan and Shiraj ud Daulla. Mahatab Chand conspired with Mirzafar and joined with Lord Clive to bring down Shiraz in the Battle of Plassey. The house oc Jagat Sheth was the family's residence and businees centre and has been converted into a meuseum now
We visited this place in January 2024 during our Murshidabad tour. The entrance on a narrow road looks unimpressive. The white two storied building complex around a square water pool also does not give the impression about the massive wealth and money power this family once possess in Bengal as well as in India. Inside large number of things used by the family and portraits of the family members are displayed. Coins minted by their own mint, financial documents of that period, weapon collection, utensils, furniture, artifacts from the family's collection can bd found. The best one is a piece of famous Bengal Muslin. You will get stumped seeing how fine the cloth is. It is kept showing that it passed through a small ring. What an amazing skill!! There was some pieces of rare Silk sarees with gold brocade on one sidd and silver brocade on the other. You can see the underground complex where wealth used to be kept in safe custody.
This place is one of the important attractions in Murshidabad.

The Jagat Seth family was a wealthy merchant, banker and money lender family from Murshidabad. The House of Jagat Seth is an interesting place to visit in Murshidabad. It has a secret tunnel, an underground arms museum and a temple. Local guides are available who will provide ample information about the history of the family

When you hear about it, you wonder why visit a house? But when you do, you realize the value of a peek into the lifestyles & assets of the rich folks of yesteryears! Truly worth a visit.

House of JAGAT SETH – the Diwan and Bankers to the NAWABS. The building has an imposing façade (unfortunately the frontage is now a stable for horses that take the tourists around Murshidabad. The museum here speaks a lot about the history then and the strength of money power of the SETHS. Armouries, secret areas to store wealth, meeting rooms and places of Hindu worship abound the huge area.

Jagath Seth was a big banker and money lender during the rule of Nawab Siraj-ud-Daula. The people (guides) say that whenever the king or the ruler was in need of money, they used to borrow from him.
The house is turned into a museum and is a well maintained place. The house has many antique pieces. There is also a tunnel which was used by Jagath Seth for secret works.
The place can be covered within 30 to 45 minutes.

Nice place. Mobile pictures should be allowed. Guide is required to know its history. A bit stuffy in the underground.

The house of Jagath Seth was the best place I visited in Murshidabad. This a lot of historical significance to the place. You can get more knowledge about the constructs you about the Nawab due to which the Battle of Plassey was fought with the British, which was lost leading to the emergence of British East India Company in India. You can spend about two hours in the place.

This is the rebuilt house of jagat seth, a powerful merchant during Bengal sultanate. The house, now turned into a museum has furniture, paintings, artifacts, crafts etc on display which were used in those days. Not really a place you’d like to visit more than once, at least not for me, but I did find this appealing when I came around the first time.

The Seth family were basically Marwaris who were the top most bankers and money lenders of those days . Jagath Seth along with Mir Jafar were the traitors who connived with The East India Company leading to the downfall of The Nawab Of Bengal Siraj Ud Daulah. The house is well maintained ,quiet and peaceful.
