Lepakshi is a small village near Hindupur, Anantpur district. It is about 90 km from Devanahalli airport and takes 90 minutes by road on hyderabad highway. As you enter Lepakshi you first get to see the huge Nandi statue next to Haritha hotel. It is the largest in the world and made of monolithic rock. It faces the Shiva idol of temple. From here you have to go to the parking lot next door. From here you have to climb 150 steps to reach the Jatayu statue on top of a hillock. There is a small entrance fee. From top of hillock you can see surrounding hills and get a birds eye view of Veerabhara temple. There are pay and use toilets at the entrance.
From here drive down a km to reach the Veerabhareshwara temple. Built by the Vijayanagar dynasty the temple architecture is marvellous. The deity is Shiva. There is a hanging pillar too.
The entire trip takes about 5 hours, 3 hours travelling time and 2 hours at Lepakshi.
Carry sunscreen cap and umbrella as it is rocky terrain
Nearest best veg restaurant is Nandi Upachar at Devanahalli.

Second largest monolithic statue in India after Shravanbelagola statue. It looks like it is situated on the roadside but there is parking and entry into a gated complex. It is very close to the Veerebhadra Swamy temple and in fact you will see it first as you approach the temple from the Bengaluru Hyderabad highway.
The bull carved out of a single granite rock is magnificent in size and detail,
Be careful of the monkeys in the complex who will snatch any edibles out of your hands.

One big mystery at the Lepakshi temple is how the hanging piller was constructed or carved. While sixty-nine other pillars support the ceiling, one corner pillar does not touch the temple floor at all.

At 2-3 hours drive from Bangalore, the place is quite easy to reach via own vehicle. You have 3 locations to visit here, more or nearby.
1. The working Veerbhadra temple with the compound holding the bit older Nagalingam in this compound now. The old unfinished Siva/Parvathy marriage hall also is inside the compound. Car parking available which is basically on the back side of the temple. Rest rooms were under construction as of Jan 2023. Lot of shops available on the main entrance side . We can reach near as well by car, but is bit congested.
2. The Nandi statue, which is the largest monolithic Nandi in a different compound nearby (though in the very olden days should have been per of the Nagalingam present in the current Veeerabhadra temple compound . This one is under ASI and well maintained with no entrance fee. (Toilet facilities etc. available here)
3. The Jatayu park, a simple simple rock structure with a Jatayu statue on the top. One need to climb the iron steps to get to the top, may not be suitable for elders.
All places can be covered in couple of hours time leisurely. Did not find any decent hotels for breakfast/lunch. Choose winter season and early morning hours for pleasant trip.

Veerabhadra Swamy temple was quite good.
Good sculptures. The temple should be publicised.
Jatayu Park was well maintained.
No good restaurants near temple.

The Nandi is huge, carved out in Sandstone and at a small distance ( less than 100 meters) from the Shiva temple. The symmetry of the bull is amazing, and though huge, is inspiring. The temple is also full of architectural marvels, though some parts of it is crumbling due to the age and being exposed to the elements. This temple also has a hanging pillar that is unsupported at the base, though which you can run a handkerchief. The carvings inside the sanctum are intricate and an ode to the temple art and architecture of the bygone times. Really worth a visit!!!

Visited Lepakshi Bull Statue enroute to Kurnool from Bangalore…..supposedly it’s the place where Jatayu fell after being attacked by Ravana as per Hindu mythology. There’s a statue of Jatayu/ bird on top of a hilltop; it’s relatively new …A bull statue is there …..which is of some significance, being older…not worth the effort for a detour

This is a huge statue of Nandi bull carved from sandstone, facing the Shiva statue in the main Veerabhadra temple in Lepakshi. This is also from Vijayanagara times. There is also a beautiful lotus pond on the complex. The park is cleanly maintained.

No idea, please check with the temple authorities. As far as I know, in this temple you can't get married.

Hello, Are there any other good places or must to visit places near to Lepakshi which can be covered in one day trip?
Skrevet 21. oktober 2018
There is bird sanctuary nearby. About 10 to 20 Km from Lepakshi. You got to take left from a junction just before Lepakshi. Its called Veerapuram Birds Sanctuary. Countless painted strokes can be found. They are migrating bird from Serbia, Russia. Lots and Lots of them.
Location : Veerapuram village. Its the Village which hosts as sanctuary.
Cheers...!!

Photography is allowed in and around the temple, except in the sanctum sanctorum. I don't think it should a problem.
