Very nice experience. These people take care of the donkeys they saved with such love and passion! We would not have missed it!

While in Crete during our Greece vacation, we made it a point to go to the donkey rescue in Agia Marina, not far from Matala. There are so many donkeys all over Greece and so many that need care, either from abuse, neglect or abandonment. This rescue is doing right by the donkeys in Crete, giving them a place of rest, security, care and affection for the rest of their lives.
It was wonderful to be able to walk among the donkeys (and sheep and ducks), brush them and give them rubs and scratches (if they so desired). Every donkey has a bracelet around their neck, with letters that spell out their name, so you know who you are hanging out with. One of the sweetest donkeys was Alexandra, and at 43 years old, the eldest at the rescue - she was very sweet, so small in stature, and she loved to be brushed.
We had a chance to speak with the founder of the rescue - although the stories are heartbreaking about the condition 95% of the donkeys arrive in (starving, overgrown hoofs that look like elf shoes they can barely walk, beaten, etc.), there are sometimes a few feel good stories - some Greek people have a donkey that belonged to an older family member who has passed away and they want the donkey to be cared for until it passes away, so they ask if the rescue can take in the donkey. We made a purchase at their little store to help as a donation for the costs of running the sanctuary. Definitely worth a visit, especially if you are an animal lover.

Lovely donkeys who are rescued by lovely family. Place is a donkey sanctuary with no entrance fee, but you can support it by buying somethin from their souvenir shop. Respect to the owners for giving these donkeys better life.

This dedication to animal welfare over decades is so remarkable that only five stars are possible. The exact family is committed to the cause around you.

A simple pleasure that does good and also helps save endangered or retired donkeys 🫏 after a long life of work.
During our visit, the youngest was 6 months old and the oldest 43 years old, male and female together, about 30 years ago, I had never seen so many together, they all have different dresses and sizes of course and there is no aggression on their part.
If they don’t talk, they know how to communicate with you and leave if they don’t like your company. Most, however, like to caress and even look for scratches.
The people in charge of the place leave brushes at your disposal, it is pretty much guaranteed that you will find one or one with whom the exchange will be long and shared, a little happiness of life that can be advised at all ages, including for families with young children.
We didn’t buy products from those responsible, we preferred to give money directly so that they would continue to take care of them as well.
Thanks to them for what they do, not all men are bad with animals, there is perhaps hope for a better balance between species.

It is a fun experience and you support a good cause. And for the little ones it's definitely fun. Especially when you're around. We had driven there especially 1 hour and 20 minutes and then it is a bit disappointing. This partly determines the review. If we had been closer and didn't have to drive that far, our review would certainly have been higher.

How nice that the neglected donkeys of Crete can enjoy their well-deserved retirement here.
Super that the family takes care of these animals and cares lovingly.
The entrance is free and you can then enjoy unlimited cuddling and brushing donkeys. What a fun and loving getaway on Crete.

A great family project! Suitable for young and old - a welcome change from a beach holiday. Animals of all kinds are rescued, taken in and nursed back to health. They may be given a second chance here. Donkeys in particular, who had to do hard work in their previous lives, are cared for here. Visit this farm if you are an animal lover!
The farm itself is quite easy to get to. A stone on a large paved road shows the way to the entrance via a gravel and unpaved path. Be sure to choose your car! If necessary, you can park 500 m further on the paved road at a fruit juice stand.
Be sure to check the opening times on the website ;)
The experience itself was great! The owners (family business) are very informative and provide all kinds of stories and information, which rounds off the experience there. The animals are so peaceful that you can pet them and you can relax and watch everything from their ranks. Carrots or apples are not allowed to be taken inside, but can be given as a donation before entering the farm.
Speaking of donations: this project does not receive any state funding... for our part, we were happy to buy something from the shop and also made a small donation.
Get an idea of these lovely creatures and their self-sacrificing carers for yourself.

My husband and I plan to visit the sanctuary in October. Is it necessary or helpful to let the owners know we are coming and when? We're really looking forward to visiting and supporting their work.
Skrevet 18. september 2016
They should be there during the normal visiting hours. But if you want to make sure just contact them.
