I thought that this was one of better sights in Andorra. There’s a museum and a church that are intended to be viewed together. They recommend seeing the museum first but we did them in reverse order and it worked out well.
The church is pretty basic but has a high tech video presentation that highlights the frescoes that had originally been in the church. Some of the actual frescoes are in the museum along with some other interesting exhibits.
There’s a public parking lot near the church and museum but it’s often full. We got lucky and got the last available spot when we went.

There are very few churches in the Romanesque world with the cylindrical bell tower and Santa Coloma is one of them.
It was built between the 8th and 9th centuries. Its current physiognomy is due to the renovations that were made in the 12th century, when the Lombard bell tower of circular plan and four stories high was added.
Now, using new technologies, we can enjoy the paintings in their original location thanks to the video mapping technique. This virtual recreation, accompanied by a play of lights and sound, projects the wall paintings on their sites with complete precision, allowing visitors to experience the sensations offered by the frescoes originally.

Structure is from two periods. The block structure is supposed to be 10th century while the tower came later around the 13th century.
Well maintained and I personally enjoyed learning about the use of a wooden layer between the stones to absorb earthquake shock.

This is a marvellous old church. Call in the museum and learn about the paintings from the super ladies who are so knowledgable. Then be accompanied over to the church for the fantastic video show inside. A real experience.

We were traveling in Andorra when we stopped to tour this ancient church built in the 700s and its corresponding museum. It became one of the greatest sites we visited in all of Andorra, Spain, and Portugal combined! It’s so memorable I’ll be talking about this for a very long time! The modest-sized facility reveals an inspiring and incredible display of ancient artifacts on a much smaller scale than world-famous museums, yet equally stunning and intriguing! This is truly a hidden gem on the European continent!
Inside the museum, you’ll view scenic video of Andorra and the process by which paintings are removed from walls and reconstructed. But the real treat is to watch the video mapping laser show inside the actual church across the street from the museum. It is absolutely jaw dropping to watch how the painting of Jesus was crafted on the ceiling from the first layer to the last, and what the chapel looked like in full color before erosion set in and the paintings were eventually sold and removed from the walls. The artifacts were actually taken to a foreign land, only to be recovered by Andorra and placed inside the modern museum (they unfortunately couldn’t be put back up on the walls of the chapel).
The video mapping presentation will make you feel as though you’ve stepped back in time to see what those paintings in their original location would have looked like! This cannot be missed if you’re in Andorra or even anywhere near Barcelona!
