Definitely worth a visit. Especially if you’re a King Arthur/Merlin fan. You don’t need much time there (little walk around and photos). Careful with dogs as there are sheep in there too! It is just missing some information boards sharing the history :)

The castle was built in the 12th century by Ranulph de Meschines, during the reign of King William Rufus. It has the remains of a Norman keep, with the later addition of a 14th-century garderobe turret, and some further additions in the 17th century.
The castle was attacked by Scots raiding parties in 1342 and again in 1541. After the latter attack it remained an uninhabitable ruin until it passed into the hands of Lady Anne Clifford, who rebuilt it in 1660, also adding a brewhouse, bakehouse, stables and coach-house. It remained one of the favourites among her many castles until her death in 1676 at the age of 86.
By the 1770s much of the building above the second storey had collapsed,[4] and it has since gradually decayed further to become the romantic ruin seen today.

We saw this recently on Helen and Dan’s Pennine Adventure on the telly and thought we’d take a look as we were not a million miles from the area.
Very atmospheric, even if they did have better weather than us. We had heavy rain and the wind whipping round the corner.
Nobody else there, just the sheep…
Glad we went.

This ruin is off the beaten track, with a small lay-by opposite to park. The castle has very little left of it, but is set in a quiet, peaceful area. It would be nice to have more information on site about the history, but was a peaceful 20 minute stop.

Lovely ruin of a small Norman Castle with an intriguing site. Quiet and off the beaten track in a beautiful setting higher up in the dale. Great place for a relaxing exploration and great for the children. Take care not to damage the fragile ruins.

Came across this by chance as we travelled to Brampton. Had a nice walk around the ruin and down by the burn. Parking is a small lay-by across the road. Nice little bit of history.

The castle itself is well worth a look, and we enjoyed a mooch around the exterior of it.
But it’s the location that makes this so worth a visit: the drive from Kirkby Stephen takes you across cattle grids to areas of hillside with sheep wandering across the road freely, surrounded by utter beauty.
Once we’d seen the castle we left the cars on the verge outside it and walked down the lane by the side of the castle. Twenty minutes uphill (but pleasantly so even for unfit people like me) and across another cattle grid and… wow. The beauty was breathtaking. We scrambled down the bank to the river where we swam in the most glorious (but freezing) bathing pools, then dried out on the bank in the sun. Well worth it.

Free entry is always a good start, and if you are passing nearby, then it is well worth stopping at the roadside parking to spend a few minutes here. 10 minutes if you are on your way somewhere - but it would be a nice picnic spot if you have the time.
Its called a castle but was probably more of what would be called a fortified tower. Built as a square, approx 50 foot on a side, with maybe 3 levels high. At some point, it collapsed inwards so that the current ground level is what would have been the old first floor. A reasonable amount of the rest is still standing, reaching 30 foot(ish) high in places.
There are no information boards about so you need to either use your imagination or use Google!
