We’d gone to walk up to the castle and didn’t realise there was payment required to walk round the castle. We were shouted at from the shop asking if we’d bought tickets and ‘don’t make me run after you’, which is not a great way to be spoken to as potential customers! We then went into the shop to check prices and saw £10 pp entry and decided that it was not worth it. The staff member then made a few comments that we’d need to pay because it’s a castle and can’t just walk through in a very rude and condescending tone, worth adding here that we ordered a coffee and a gingerbread biscuit in the cafe and the lady who served us was lovely.
Won’t be returning to Goodrich Castle and will be advising others to give it a miss!

Had an amazing time at this castle. The dog could come with us in every aspect of the castle and the cafe. It was so fun to explore the different areas of the castle. Quite a few sets of stairs and it can get a little muddy so wellies or walking boots are best. Take a torch with you as there are some little parts that are dark. Staff were super friendly and the food in the cafe was lovely and reasonably priced. Would recommend and defo go again!

Didn’t visit the castle but the staff at the shop were very helpful regarding walking routes and recommended a lovely little book.
Also after our walk we visited the cafe and had the best cuppa and Victoria sponge ever !

An argument could be made against the charge for the car park; however, the prices are reasonable for what is here. Even within the gift shop there are interesting exhibits, as shells and other items from the Civil War siege are on display. It is always a pleasure to be able to see the history rather than just read about it. Goodrich Castle is an impressive fortification from the outside, with its red sandstone and tall towers, making the walk up to it a point of interest in itself. Upon entering, the first room we explored was the chapel. It is partially restored and features a simple stained-glass window. Both the ramparts and the Norman Keep provide great views over the surrounding countryside and display the site's former military importance. The mortar Roaring Meg, used during the siege of the castle in 1646, has been placed on display. This is a particularly interesting aspect of the castle, as it is not often such weapons are put on display like this. The rest of the rooms make for an interesting explore, and signs throughout help to interpret what each room was used for and the history behind it. Outside the walls were the stables, now just foundations, which show a different side to the castle's history. Walking through the moat also puts the size of the site into perspective, with the towers and walls of the moat looming over those below. As with most English Heritage sites, the gift shop is well stocked, and the toilets are clean. The history behind Goodrich Castle is fascinating, and I agree with historian Adrian Pettifer's assessment of the castle as an extremely impressive example of military architecture. This is an amazing historic place that should be visited if you are nearby.

So much to see and so much history. Really interesting to see how it was built and developed through the years. Get a head set

The oldest part of Goodrich castle is its keep, erected by either Gilbert or his son Richard de Clare around the middle of the twelfth century. Most of the stronghold was (re)built by the Valence family at the end of the thirteenth and the start of the fourteenth century.
In 1646 the royalist garrison of Goodrich castle surrender to parliamentarian forces after a two month siege. In 1648 the fortress is slighted by order of parliament.
In the eighteenth and nineteenth century Goodrich castle becomes the first stop of the famous Wye Tour.
*
Visitors can discover Goodrich castle with the help of information panels, an audioguide and an outstanding guidebook. Numerous reconstruction drawings allow to visualise the former splendour of the buildings.
The tour of the stronghold gives a very good impression of the daily life(style) of an important noble family like the Valences. (William, the head of family, was a half brother to king Henry III). A surprising amount of architectural details (like washbasins) have been preserved.
I was equally impressed by the mighty barbican, the (remains of the) drawbridge mechanism, the kitchen layout (buttery, pantry, kitchen proper), the latrine tower and the pillars of the great solar.
You can climb all the way to the keep platform to enjoy a good view of the whole edifice and far beyond.

This is not a review of the Castle itself which I visited many years ago and is wonderfull.
This is to point out the pure unadulterated greed of the organisation running this site. you get charged to enter the castle fair enough, but to then add on additional uncalled for parking charges is ridiculous and greedy in the extreme especially now with the ever increasing cost to the general public due to inflation.
Your Additional cost for parking meant that my wife and I did not stop nor did three cars that followed us into the car park, we alone would have bought a guide book etc so for the sake of the car park charges you probably lost about £35:00 to £40:00 in entrance fees and additional puchases! shame your so greedy.

We were surprised how much there is to see. The included audio tour was very informative and gave lots of insight into life in the castle. We spent about 2h here and had some of the best scones ever in the cafe.

Enjoyed our trip to Goodrich Castle, though found it a little expensive for the time we spent there. We were about an hour and done, though we didn't opt for the audio tour which may have meant we spent longer there. Dog friendly which was a bonus. Stunning building, a real piece of history, would recommend taking a look.

This review is in no way criticising the castle which looks great. I would like to draw attention to the fact that a public path runs up to the castle and stops at the bridge. This path runs along the side of the gift shop and until yesterday could be accessed with no need to enter the shop. Yesterday 2 signage boards blocked public access to this path, diverting into the gift shop. We walked through the shop but staff called out to us across the shop in front of customers, asking what we were doing? We explained we were just walking up to the bridge which is something we’ve done before with no problems. They weren’t happy about this as we weren’t paying customers, but cannot legally stop anyone from using the public path. We walked to the bridge and a member of staff seen previously in the shop walked up behind us a few minutes later to check we hadn’t actually gone into the castle. Over zealous? A tad considering they’ve no legal rights to stop anyone walking up to the castle and enjoying the view of this magnificent castle and beautiful surrounding countryside.

We visited with a 5 year old field lab, he loved it and so did we, we were allowed to take him into the tea room as he is very well trained and it was raining heavily and we wanted food as well as hot drinks, it was quiet and one we took his hi-viz coat off he stayed under my chair the whole time, he made it round several other castles and sites during our trip, always on his lead ofcourse
