Spent a lovely few hours in large gardens - beautifully kept. Formal gardens with interesting and attractive plant combinations; walks through meadows and copses to 'ruined abbey' (an evocative reconstruction) and along the 'Silk Route' for a bit of garden history. The Thomas Heatherwick glasshouse is unusual and definitely worth a look, whatever your view on it.
The coffee's good, the gardeners very approachable and informative and the minibus from Midhurst worked perfectly to timetable (check website for details). A quirky day out for all!

As soon as you walk through the gateway it's relaxing. Stunning planting, views that invite investigation, walled garden, views, meanderings and just a feast for the senses. Went May 2022. Minibus driver does take a break for lunch, check times if you need to get back for anything... Like school pick up as I did. Lovely friendly staff.
No cafe.. Not sure if any plans to reopen after covid.. Would be so lovely to be able to get a coffee and cake but they welcome bringing your own and many many places to sit and have a view, close or far.

We love coming here, just a shame only open couple of days during the week so can only get here when on leave. A beautiful garden, and immaculately kept. Love the different garden rooms, and wish we could take a dip in the swimming pool! Shame cafe now closed.

Thank you for your great review, we are delighted you enjoy the garden and find it so beautiful! Sadly our cafe is not a viable option in the current climate, we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause. We hope to welcome you back to Woolbeding Gardens again soon.

Woolbeding Gardens are currently open two days a week (Thu/Fri) - you have to book in advance online and meet with a shuttle bus in one of the Midhurst car parks as there are no on site parking facilities (except for advance booked disabled badge holders). Gardens are beautifully maintained and although it can be a bit of a puzzle locating the different sections, they’re all worth seeking out - children will probably enjoy the Bird Hide (which looks out over numerous feeders) and seeing what they can spot.

There are toilets and a second hand book shop but currently no cafe facilities (you can however take picnics/food). Gardeners are doing a fantastic job in maintaining everything and are more than happy to have a chat about plants and gardening in general. All in all - a very pleasant and recommended day out.

Either before or after your visit it’s worth taking a stroll around the market town of Midhurst

It is slightly inconvenient having to book and to be taken by bus from Midhurst but well worth it. This is a really interesting garden which reflects the individual taste of the original owners. Wander around all the area of the garden to get a real taste of evrything it has to offer

A beautiful haven, delights hidden round every corner. Don't be put off by having to park in the town, the transport is very frequent, we didn't have to wait at all.

These are some of the best gardens I have seen in a long time. You really do feel you are in your own bit of heaven! With a restricted entrance of so many a day - you have to book in advance - there were no crowds, no queuing and no parking worries as you leave your car in a car park and take a shuttle bus to Woolbeding Gardens. There is, however, some disabled parking available on site if booked in advance. The staff are all so very friendly and helpful - the facilities clean - lovely little cafe and a very small selection of plants to buy. There is a talk every thirty minutes on the history of the house and gardens which is well worth attending. The gardens are absolutely immaculate with lots of seating and picnic spots to enjoy. Spent an enjoyable three hours there but will definitely be back in Spring to enjoy the gardens again and this time spend more time. How I wish the house were open...... it looked absolutely lovely and loved from the outside!

Be aware of the need to book in advance and take advantage of the shuttle bus from Midhurst. There is no parking at the site apart from limited space for the registered disabled. The lay by and verges are off limits and you will be politely asked to move on, if you are so tempted.

The gardens are, as one might expect, immaculate and varied, with vegetables cages, hot “room”, long walk, exotic planting and haha all to entertain and delight. A spectacular William Pye fountain with its massive stainless steel form and cascading water provide a multitude of photographic opportunities. Because of controlled access operated by the Trust the site tends to be uncrowned and peaceful.

Thank you for your great review of the gardens, we're glad you found your visit peaceful and found the gardens immaculate, I will certainly pass these lovely comments onto our garden team who appreciate all feedback. As you rightly point out, unfortunately we cannot allow parking down the local lanes for our visitors, due to tight opening restrictions we have with the local council. Therefore we operate our shuttle bus service from nearby Midhurst, and aim to make the process as quick and efficient for our visitors as possible. Thank you again for your 5 star review, and we hope to welcome you back to Woolbeding Gardens again in the future.

Ensure instructions on the NT site are followed, getting the regular minibus in the Midhurst Grange car-park; no problem and we allowed 4 hours first week in August.

A very relaxing and enjoyable garden. Make sure you hear the talk which gives a good perspective on the gardens and features. Also, using the map supplied, take time to visit all the features shown, especially the Long Walk, about 15 minutes, to the lake and the River God so avoid going if rain is forecast! Finished with a cream tea. As NT members we will visit again in spring.

Thank you for your wonderful 5 star review, we're very pleased to hear you enjoyed the gardens and our Introductory talk by our volunteer. Luckily we have many summer houses, follies and huts to seek shelter in should you unfortunately meet with rain on your visit! We greatly look forward to welcoming you back again next year; our gates open again on 23rd April 2020.

We have lived and worked throughout the UK and visited numerous National Trust gardens - Woolbeding is amongst the best!

The 26 acres, surrounded by beautiful Sussex countryside, truly have something for everyone. There are individual gardens (Well garden, Herb garden, Fountain garden etc), open parkland and The Longwalk (a wooded area around the lake, surrounded by various follies).

We look forward to returning. A special thank you to the enthusiastic and helpful volunteers manning the reception desk, and one of the serving ladies in the cafe.

CATERING
PS I’ve given a five star review on the basis of the gardens and excluded rating the catering. Sadly the catering is extremely basic and, while I can understand why this is so, I’m sure it could be better run and organised. On the day of our visit with friends the two ladies running the counter didn’t appear to be speaking to each other (with one more focussed on sorting deliveries than helping the other - extremely friendly - lady, even when a long queue was forming). The queue blocked access to and from the gardens, sandwiches (white bread only!) varied considerably in freshness, customers who’d chosen cold drinks, sandwiches, etc had to stand holding (sometimes heavy) trays waiting for the one server to finish making coffee etc .......I could go on but what is really needed is someone in NT with experience to take a look at the cafe.

Thank you for your 5 star review of Woolbeding Gardens, we are so delighted to hear you enjoyed your visit and find us amongst the best! We are also pleased you found the Reception Team and the lady serving in the café so helpful, I will certainly pass this lovely feedback onto the teams. With regards to your catering experience, thank you for explaining your experience of the café. We are very sorry you did not have a positive experience of the café on your visit. At peak times our café can sometimes get busy; unfortunately we are very restricted by the space available in the listed barn building and therefore we have to design our café area around this restriction. We fully appreciate that this can sometimes lead to queues and limited areas in which to place trays. We are constantly reviewing our offer, and will take your comments into serious consideration going forward when we plan for future opening. Unfortunately we do not have any other buildings that are of suitable use as a café on site, and likewise do not have space for a kitchen on site. Therefore all our sandwiches are made fresh at Petworth House and brought over in the morning before we open to the public. We would be most appreciative if you could contact us at woolbedinggardens@nationaltrust.org.uk with the date and time of your visit, so we can investigate further why the sandwiches were all on white bread (we usually provide an even mix) and so we can investigate the sandwich choices made on the day. Again we are very sorry you did not have a good experience with our serving staff, this was certainly not the level of service we aim to provide visitors with, and your experience fell well below our benchmark. Again, if you would like to email us separately at woolbedinggardens@nationaltrust.org.uk with the date and time of your visit, we would be very happy to follow this up, to ensure such a situation does not happen again for other visitors. Thank you again for your review, and we would love to welcome you back to Woolbeding Gardens again soon!
