A Hidden Treasure –

or at least, as hidden as you can be with five massive bottle kilns on site!

Gladstone has been on my 'to-visit' list for quite a while. However, at over 100 mile distance it’s on the limit of a day-trip but I’m SO pleased I made the effort.

When phoning to check opening hours, the helpful person in the shop said ‘we recommend two hours for a visit’. Forget that! If you are anyway interested in ceramics, art, or history, you are going to want at least half a day here. This, relatively small, space is crammed full of amazing details. You can easily spend an hour in the tile gallery alone. The web site massively under-sells the museum. This is an absolute gem. And to think it came within hours of demolition.

It is a small site, but on multiple levels (I believe there are lifts but did not need to check accessibility). I was visiting on a scorching hot Sunday in mid-August 2022 and had a pleasant quiet time to walk around with few other visitors. Be sure to use the free map you will be given to find all the displays. There is a pleasant absence of in-your-face signage but that does mean you can miss sections.

Shop is a bit ‘National Trust’ but also has lots of on-theme books and items made at Gladstone so big tick for that. Some lovely original artworks, again right on-theme for the site. Super-helpful staff throughout.

Curiously, no mention anywhere of KBJ or ‘Throw-Down’. I guess that’s a contractual thing, or another example of Stoke Museums determination to under-sell their excellence?

The only disappointment was the café. Perfect location, smart and clean, pleasant staff, but a pretty poor choice of fare and, worst of all – paper cups! I’ve driven over two hours to visit a monument to ceramic tableware and I’m sold weak instant coffee in a paper cup. To be honest – speechless . . . . What a missed opportunity. No criticism of the staff – they can only offer what they are given. But the Manager needs to be made to walk round with a loaded saggar on their head until they improve the café offering. And if you don’t know what a saggar is – get yourself over to Gladstone Pottery Museum and find out. You’ll be pleased you did. Just be sure to take a flask of nice coffee and your own CHINA CUP.

The tour of the factory was brought as a gift to us as we are newish to the area and it was brilliant. Chris was our guide who was very patient with us and answered all our questions as well as having a great knowledge of the workings of the factory. Very enjoyable time and topped off by having oatcakes in the cafe! Thanks Chris for looking after us so well.

Absolutely fabulous day at Gladstone Pottery. Such an informative tour (we walked round on our own, not the factory tour as we just wanted to mooch round) and everywhere you went there were either videos or notice boards giving you so much information about pottery processes. I am an amateur potter and I learnt so much. The staff are an absolute delight and the lovely lady making her beautiful flowers was just lovely. She is retiring soon after 50 years in the job which she obviously still loves so go soon to meet her. All in all a fabulous way to learn and enjoy a few hours in this wonderful location.

Lovely, interesting and educational place for all ages.
Unfortunately, let down by the cafe which is the pits. Suggest that you take a packed lunch.
- Only a small menu.
- Half the items shown on the menu were off.
- Very slow service.
- Stale bread.
- Very expensive.

My wife and I visited the museum as we were staying in the area and wanted to know more about the history of the area and the pottery industry. The museum was just perfect for this - very interesting and informative, and the staff were friendly and helpful . In particular the three ladies doing the demonstrations were amazing, demonstrating the diferent processes and showing their skills. The fixed displays were really good too. Overall a brilliant place to visit.

Free parking, very, very friendly staff and a really interesting well layed out experience. We are four older folks and were really impressed with how much there is to see. It is also great for children to explore as ther are lots of seperate sections. We loved the ladies showing us how things were done. Very impressed.

An excellent museum, giving us all the fascinating detail about the processes of the pottery industry, with all due emphasis on the often appalling dangers. But jobs were nonetheless highly valued, as there were few jobs elsewhere. Nor does the museum play down the shameful reliance on child labour. Endlessly fascinating. Also loved the exhibition on decorative tiles.

This is a really good museum experience . Very well presented and interesting . For all age groups . We loved the place . What a good job it was saved from demolition and a great tribute to all the local people who worked there in such tough conditions over the industrial revolution period and beyond. Also such talent amongst the workers and the owners and entrepreneurs of the time .
Well worth a visit - allow plenty of time . You won’t want to rush .

A full three hour visit and no wasted time. All staff prepared to contribute to the experience, both in handling questions and volunteering further input.
As a Cornishman, with no particular knowledge of the pottery industry, the secrets of the bottle kiln were fully revealed - they put the kiln in a bottle - together with the making of slip for bone china, the ingredients of which were 50% Cornish; fantastic and a revelation too.
As a former seagoing marine engineer, it was good to see the compound steam engine running, (albeit not under steam power), and see its purpose.
There was information revealed about water closets, their manufacture, design, development, decoration and variety sufficient to fill a large area with excellent displays.
Whilst this was a solo visit, I look forward to returning with my wife, who will find much of interest (not least in the fine retail area).
