Just a few kilometers away from Miag-ao church (Saint Thomas of Villanova Church) is this interesting church dedicated to Saint Joachim (considered by Christian tradition as the father of the Blessed Virgin Mary). The actual church was built in 1859-1869 by the Augustinian priest Tomas Santarén, whose mortal remains, according to a historical marker near the main altar, lie there. It is said that while the construction was ongoing, news about the Spanish victory over the Moors in Tetouan, Morocco (year 1860) reached Father Tomas, who then decided to have the battle scene immortalized on the church's façade. San Joaquin church thus became the only church in the Philippines with a militaresque motif on its façade, making it worth-visiting. The material used in building the church -- a mixture of limestone and corals -- is also interesting, as well as the belfry. No wonder this church was declared as a national cultural treasure and a national historical site. An added attraction would be a nice view of the sea just a few meters away from it.

We went here after visiting the Garin Farm. There is ample parking around this church. Took several pictures outside before going inside this church.

Decorations inside the church are simple. I said my prayers before taking off.

The initial impression from the outside is that this is going to be grand. The façade is really nicely done. Unfortunately the church was locked when we visited but we found a back door which was open. The church is big inside but pretty bare. The alter piece is very nice though.

It is so amazing to visit this 150 years old church of San Joaquin. The location is a landmark of a historic event during this era when the church was erected. I was trul6 mesmerized by the scenery nearest to 5his church.

The newly restored facade of the Church of San Joaquin in the town of the same name (approx. 54kms away from Iloilo City proper) is worth a visit in itself! It was only after they have restored and cleaned it up in 2015 that I came to appreciate more its beauty and artistic value, with all its intricate details, bas-reliefs and colors! Prior to this, the whole design was covered with dark soot due to environmental pollution.

The scene on the facade's pediment depicts the famous Battle of Tetouan, which took place in 1860 in Morocco in North Africa. It was a battle between the Spaniards and the Moors. Tetouan at that time was a base for Moroccan raids in Ceuta and Melilla in Southern Spain.

The church was built in by the Augustinians 1869. In 1980 it was enlisted by the National Historical Institute of the Philippines as one of the country's national historical site. Successively, in 2001, the place was declared as a national cultural treasure by the National Museum.

Not very far from the Church of San Joaquin is a beautiful, historical and equally interesting Spanish cemetery... the "Campo Santo" ... and some 15ms away is the famous Church of Saint Thomas of Villanova in Miag-ao (declared as one of the four UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the country). Be sure you visit these three places when you are in the area. It would be like hitting three birds with one stone! :D

I wasn't expecting what I saw. It was recently restored (or cleaned) so it was gleaming and the sculpture in the facade is just awesome.

It was the same feeling I got when I first visited Miag-ao Church. Visit it while it is still good.

Located at the southern part of Iloilo bordering Antique. It has a very detailed untouched facade carvings of horsemen and soldiers during the Battle of Tetuan, which got it the moniker "militaristic church". This was also used as a fort during the Muslim raids. It has been declared a national historic site in the 70's. Surrounding it is the park and town hall, and public market nearby. This church should definitely be in your itinerary if you are very interested in old churches and architecture.
