Abandoned trails
apr. 2021 • Par
Our GPS got us lost but we found a sign in Bulwer. Sadly the place is abandoned. Buildings used as cattle kraals and no information on trail. Using an old booklet we managed to hike thru the forest but the boardwalks and all signage have long gone. So sad. When we visited 10 years ago it was a wonderful experience. Luckily the forest itself is still intact and you can hear the birds all around, but it is no longer an attraction that one can recomnend.

BULWER ROADS R617
jan. 2021
The road to BULWER is absolutely terrible.
Dodging pot holes at speed is not safe. Some were as big as a small cave. Taxis overtaking at blind bends, double lines and then trying to cut in. If you have to travel this route be warned !! Dangerous.

Some interesting birds, but . . .
okt. 2019
This is a great forest for rare birds. We found Cape Parrot, Ground Hornbill, Olive woodpeckers, Golden-breasted Buntings, Red-Chested Cuckoo, etc., (we were there very early in the morning. Unfortunately, the visitor-centre has been vandalised and is in disrepair. Some of the footpaths are used by pedestrian commuters and litter is becoming a problem. We were there in late October 2019.

Marutswa Forest Boardwalk Disappointment
sep. 2017 • Venner
It was with great expectations that we stopped by the Marutswa Forest boardwalk to do some forest birding, after it was recommended by a friend who was there a few years ago. All the infrastructure at the visitors center is totally dilapidated and there was nobody in attendance. We were uncertain where the circular walk start / end point were and felt uncomfortable to explore, since there were no sign of recent grass cutting or use of the paths.

Stunning forest but sadly neglected
sep. 2017
A gem of a forest, so beautiful and majestic. However, it greatly saddened me to see that the reception area had been abandoned and vandalized. Some of the boardwalks inside the forest had been vandalized and torn apart. The forest edges had been burnt for cattle grazing by the local community, but in my opinion, the old native forests of the area need a buffer zone around the edges to protect them. There were cattle roaming inside the forest. I understand that there is a lack of funding to continue supporting the forest, but I hope the forest is restored in the future and not left to the local community to cut down and turn into pasture land.

The stunning native forests of this area need National protection if these forests are to survive for future generations and continue to support the endemic Cape Parrot.

Bird Lovers Paradise.

An amazing yellowwood forest with lots of special birds. We saw the endangered Cape Parrots, Knysna Turacos, Bush Blackcaps to name a few. We went with guide Jack Molefe 0791571475 who is an excellent bird guide.

A hidden gem but badly neglected
jun. 2017 • Par
On the spur of the moment we turned into the road leading to the forrest. The entry area has been badly neglected. There are no guides or proper directions only an indication of a trail. But wow what a gem of a forrest. Huge yellowwood tress, tangled vines and and secretive little detours. In summer it must be a birders paradise. It is sad that the community and even the big local forrest companies like SAPPI do not support such a gem in their midst. Despite the neglect I will definitely go there again and show our friend this hidden gem on the way to the Drakensu

Peaceful walk in search of birds
okt. 2016 • Venner
Five birders from the U.S., plus our South African guide, spent time here on our itinerary--once for two hours in the afternoon and the second time very early one morning. Both times, we were the only ones on the trail. We found birds here that we did not see elsewhere, such as the White-eyed Robin, Cape Parrot, and African Emerald Cuckoo. The trails are easy to walk and go through excellent habitat.

Great Forest, Terrible Management
jan. 2016 • Familie
Having visited this Forest several years before I was mortified to see the state that the entrance office had degraded into. In fact nobody was even in the filthy Forest Reserve Front Office when we drove in, rather a scruffy bag, and unashamedly, was left outside the office asking for donations, which judging by the state of the immediate surroundings I suspect was clearly going into someones back pocket and not into managing the forest. The local municipality/government have little to be proud of here which should not come as much of a surprise when one looks at the state that the once quaint little town of Bulwer has degenerate to. The GOOD NEWS is the although most the signs within the forest have been stolen or vandalized the forest is still fantastic and worth trekking through. The bird and plant life here is amazing. Hopefully in time the local tax collecting council will be shamed into cleaning up its act and restore this forest reserve to its former glory.

Birding Birding
des. 2015
This is a short walk for a hike and a long walk for birders. Huge amount of birds including the Knysna Loerie and the indangered Cape Parrot. This was our third visit and we were fortunate to see both.
