Birded the Yabello area in April 2021 with 4WD and driver&guide. The tracks in the park were good enough even after some rain, but make sure you enquire about the conditions (safety and roads) before you go, especially on the Soda plains, as it can really get tricky with the mud. You need to call the NP's office ahead if you plan on driving off the main road between Yabello and Mega (both sides are NP area and you need a permit and ranger).
My birding guide was Bereket FUFA (he actually was my guide for my whole 3-week birding trip in Ethiopia). Bereket was a great guide. He knows where to find the birds and how to get there. He speaks english fluently, as well as several of the languages spoken in Ethiopia, which turns out extremely helpful.
He also knows many local people who can provide up-to-date information on the prevailing local situations (roads condition, safety, ...) and local hotels in Yabello that are not featured in guide books and that are much cheaper than the Yabello Motel).
He'll be happy to be your birding guide if you plan on visiting Ethiopia

Noteworthy sightings in the Yabello area (roadside bush, soda plains, etc...) included Stresemann's bush-crow and white-tailed swallows (great views of both), somali ostriches, somali crombec, acacia tit, red-naped bush-shrike, short-tailed larks, lappet-faced vultures and kori bustard feeding on termites, sombre nightjars flushed during the day while walking on the plains, and many others, plus steel-blue whydah shortly after leaving Yabello on the way to Konso. Also, we had great views of a small herd of Grant's gazelles and of 2 small herds of zebras.
There are few tracks on the park, and no walking trails properly speaking, so it's more parking on the side of the track or the road and walking around in the bush or plains with guide and ranger.

Visited with local scout who took us to the right area to see the Stresemann's Bush Crow.
Bird life quite good but not too many mammals seen.

I paid entrance fees and a guide, drove and walked around for two hours, saw cows and butterflies and at the end of the "tour" the guide said unfortunately wild animals had migrated away... waste of time. Ethiopian wildlife reserves in general are fairly poor and usually full of cattle. This one seems fairly empty...

If you are patient and have good eyes there are quite a large number of birds around. However, mammals (hares) were very shy.

From Addis till Arba Minch, we were in the mountains and for people that enjoy the african landscape this can be disappointing. Well if you really want to go back to Europa with the felling you were in Africa, go till Yabelo. It was goed to see Savanna again. The birdwatching in this sanctuary is excellent with a few endemics and a lot of internationals...Ask for Gofou at the park's office. His knowledge is great!
