Totally unexpected, the canyon hike has been really interesting and so so fun. I did it on my own, so I got picked up at somoto station by Henry and Rigo, then we started the exploration with the very skilled and funny guide Rigo. Even if my Spanish isn't great we had such great time, jumping from cliffs, drifting in the water and talking a lot. I can really say they are great humans and professionist and I highly recommend the tour as worthy for the price. They provide shoes, life jacket and a dry bag for your belongings and at the end of tour we went in their farm and they prepared such a lovely fresh lunch. Such a great day!!

We completed the ‘long haul’ (see photos attached) version of the somoto canyon hike between the 7th to 8th of October 2022. It’s worth noting that October is the wettest month of the year for nicuragua and so our experience is potentially more of a reflection of a wet season experience than the usual experience of others.

Logistically there is a few options. Given it’s location on the panamerican highway (it’s about 10km from the northern Honduras border) you can potentially overnight here after crossing the border either in the town of somoto itself (although this is a few kms out of the canyon) or in a one of the limited lodgings offered near the entrance (these usually offer a combination of lodging, meals and tours). Others chose to base themselves in Estelli and come out here. You can do it as a very long day trip from León or Granada but you’re looking at 9-10 hours driving return. Either way you need to hire the local guides at the entrance to visit. You cannot bring your own.

We did a 2 day 1 night overnight trip from León using the company fun n sun travel. The big advantage of this is it allowed us enough time to complete the 5 hour hike one day and then the 5 hour ‘long’ canyon tour the next rather than the rushed single half day version.

To experience the canyon you can do one of four advertised tours which usually involve elements of hiking and canyoning and vary in difficulty and duration. The pictures attached to this should go through it. I’ve been told the guides will often select a tour depending on the days canyon conditions.

We enjoyed our time in the canyon but were surprised by how adventurous and at times, dangerous it was. We did the long tour and to be honest I felt the addition sections provided in this option compared to the shorter versions were sketchy to say the least. At one point we were rock climbing about 5-10m above a fast flowing river using foot and handholds that were only 15cm wide. At another point we had to swim across a fast flowing river and try not to get washed downstream. My wife barely made the guides hand. I think if you’re not young and fit the longer version I would definitely avoid. It’s worth noting there is no safety equipment provided including helmets. We did however get through without incident. Our guides helped a lot in this regard. We had two for the three of us and we needed them both.

I don’t think it’s usually this bad. I think the time of year (wet season) meant that the canyon was flowing faster than usual. There is definately a conflict of interest here given than those who make the call with tours safety are locals that depend on the income.

Despite this we had a good time and would recommend it to others. However perhaps not the long version and not in wet season. If you do come here make sure you bring hiking shoes and be prepared to be wet for the majority of the hike as the first water crossing is at the start.

Wonderful time with Juan (WhatsApp +505 8446 3525), a local guide. He guided us in the canyon, there are different duration of tours and he adapts the tour to your level. It was very fun and it's definitely worth a visit. You will also get a lot of information about the area. To get to Somoto, you can hop on a bus from Esteli or Managua. I highly recommend this activity!

The canyon is spectacular; definitely a highlight of any visit to Nicaragua. Cañon de Somoto Tours (WhatsApp Message +505 5791 9556) was very professional. I was met at the Somoto bus stand, taken to lodging at Henry's and did the 6hr tour the next day with a great guide who was clear on where it was safe to jump and where not. Accommodation at Henry's is a bit rustic, but very comfortable and the meals were very good. Beer is a very good price too!
I highly recommend a tour of the Canyon!

Somoto Canyon is one of the best adventure experiences to do in Nicaragua. We did a day trip here with Danny’s Tours our of Granada and it was a very full and fun day trip. The Somoto Canyon tour takes you on a hike through the canyon and once you reach the water you get to float through the canyon and there are a couple of places where you can even jump from a height of about 2 metres into the water. It is surprisingly cold in the water, and the canyon is quite shaded, so be sure to bring a warm change of clothes to change into at the end of the tour. The tour ends with a boat ride through the last bit of the canyon which is a relaxing way to end the trip. It’s surprisingly close to the Honduras border and you can even get glimpses of Honduras from one part of the hike.
We had so much fun on our tour of Somoto Canyon and highly recommend this day trip.

We stayed at Henry's place for one night. His family was really friendly and kindful :)
The food was really good and they organised our transport FROM Somoto and everything for the canyon tour. The day after we were leaving at 7 for a 6 hours walking/ jumping and swimming tour into the canyon. You gonna enjoy every second of your day overthere! I highly recommend!

Thank you again to Henry and his family
