Park in the car park next to the beach on the mainland and then head out across the sand to the island (at low tide). You can also drive across if you want but a walk across the sand to the island and then a circuit of the island will take you less than a couple of hours. Make sure you have whatever provisions you might need as there are no shops/facilities on the island, just a very quiet lane and lots of unspoilt beaches, rabbits, cows, birds and the odd person.

It really is a lovely place top walk around, especially on a fine day. Just check the tide times as you don't want to get stranded, as you will be if you are still on the island at high tide.

There is a great circular walk you can do. Follow the road left when you get onto the island and then follow it all the way around to the lough. Then turn right across the fields to the highest point on the island, marked by a cairn, then continue down to an abandoned old building and then down to the beach. Then basically follow the beach/coast around to your right until you get to a stretch of sand you can walk across back to the mainland.

An interesting stop on the WAW, this island is reached via a sand causeway that is only accessible twice a day at low tide. It’s funny to see the road signs buried deep in the sand, as you leave the tarmac road, showing the safe path across the sands to the island.

We walked a mile down the island’s only road to the highest point which provided spectacular views over the internal loch and out to sea.

Well worth a visit if you’re driving the Wild Atlantic Way.

Oney Island is magnificent and was one of the highlights of my trip to Connemara. Watch the tides, you have a couple of hours either side of low tide to walk or drive across to the island.
The walk from the car park on the mainland takes about 15 minutes.
Once on Omey just enjoy the land that time forgot! It's enchanting. Stunning scenery and wonderful peace and quiet. There is one road snaking away to your left even you arrive on the beach, follow it and it leads past a curious lake in the centre of the island to a beautiful headland where people wild camp and there are lovely beaches there.
If you instead go right as you arrive you can follow the coast around to more stunning beaches.
Dont forget the tides though or you're spending the night!!!

Really lovely island and really unusual in that you have to wait till the tide is out to walk or drive across to it.Some really nice beaches. Some old house. Some medieval buildings. No one has lived on this islands since the early 70's.You have 3 or 4 hours to explore the island before you have leave as you have to get back before the tide comes back in.

Make sure to check the tide tables to see when you'll be able to cross over on foot or by car, and by when you'll have to cross back to the mainland. We went over by car, but on the way back, the kids decided to walk/run, so we met them back at the other end -- they really enjoyed that! The island itself is very nice and peaceful, with beautiful nature and scenery. We must have spent at least a couple of hours just wandering around and taking it all in. The kids had a lot of fun running around the grass, boulders, and sand dunes. Definitely worth a visit.

Our airb&b was nearby so we drove to Omey Island after hearing about it. Beautiful beach that you can walk or drive on. We just had a walk as we weren't sure what time the tide was due back in.

Super promenade, les paysages sont beaux, il y avait peu de monde donc c'était vraiment agréable, attention toutefois à ne pas enliser votre voiture sur le sable comme certains, pour nous pas de soucis nous étions à pied.

I have visited Omey many times. My bias is that my mother was born there and lived there until she emigrated to the United States in 1955. No one lives there now. The last permanent resident passed away in 2017. It is a barren, windswept little island that is accessible at low tide. There are no shops or amenities. If you are looking for solitude in a remote location this is a great place. At night, the stargazing is fantastic. It gets so dark you dare not walk around until your eyes have adapted for at least 20 minutes. There is an old monastic site, a holy well and the ruins of several homes. There are also a couple of holiday homes. onn the west side of the island there is a small lagoon that is protected by dunes and I have seen many people camping there. There are also interesting granite cliffs on the west side.

Omey Island and the self catering Omey House are an absolute delight. Wonderful days spent exploring and photographing nature. And the hosts at Omey House are the most gracious you could ever hope to meet. Will definitely be returning.
