On our Essex Road Trip, we visited Tilbury Fort - one of the most amazing military forts in the UK - The first permanent fortification was built as a consequence of international tensions between England, France and the Holy Roman Empire in the final years of the reign of King Henry VIII.
Situated in a very industrial area of Essex - it is easily missed, as it is along the path and behind the Worlds End Pub.
Whilst there, we stopped by Tilbury Port - where we learnt, one could take the ferry to Graveend and it was also were SS Windrush dock with passengers from the West Indies, in the 50s. There is a Walkway of Memories Bridge, created by EVEWRIGHT.

We are on a cruise ship that docked in Tilbury and saw there was a fort there so we decided to go and have a look.
The fort was put there to help protect London from the armada coming up the Thames. There are many field guns in the fort from pre WW1 to WW2 & one large Navy gun commanding views over the Thames to Gravesend. Inside the fort you have a guard room, chapel, tunnels, power store, & the officers house.
Parking on site is free, grassy areas to sit and have a picnic all in all a nice place.
Staff are very helpful & friendly.

Hidden behind the industrial port and tucked up behind the Worlds End pub, is the immense and historical gem that is Tilbury Fort,
From the huge magazines houses to the ammunition tunnels and spectacular panoramic views over the River Thames to Gravesend, there is so much to see and explore, you also have the opportunity to use the audio guide if you prefer.
There is also ample grassland for younger (and older) visitors to run/walk around and table and benches for picnics, and the opportunity to handle and move the large guns to aim at you target!
The staff here are always so very friendly, and reason we come back often, particularly Paul with his in-depth knowledge of the fort and it’s surrounding areas, he takes time to answer any questions you have and always has some new information to tell on both the social aspects and military past of the Fort’s history, he’s an excellent custodian.

Went to Tilbury Fort by train, The station is Tilbury Town and it`s a good 25 mins walk, By the way , Next station down is Chafford Hundred and the retail park next to it is Lakeside !Very well signposted. Head towards the Docks. Car Parking available.
This lovely Fort ,Built by Henry Vlll and Queen Elizabeth rallied her troops against the Armada , Also it was used during the World War ll to guard the Thames Estuary.
I was greeted by a lovely young lady who told me what to expect and was so very polite , The Fort is owned by English Heritage and it cost me £6.90 adult (Jan 2022 prices) .You also can get , which i recommend a audio guide to tell you about the different parts you see. I started at old barracks where the soldiers stayed and the Offices Houses and also go into the tunnels where the Shells and Bullets were kept , Very dimly lit as it had to be back in the day. I also went on top of the sea wall to look at the Thames and also see some of the World War ll heavy Guns in situe , They look like they are ready for action. There is a room/exhibition as well where again some of the gunpowder was kept and a brief history into the timeline of the Fort. There are Information boards dotted around telling you where you are and again the history of that part.
There is not a cafe on site but the person at the entrance does have a tea/coffee machine with light snacks , Crisps, Chocolates, Cake and there is a toilet on site.
And a small Gift Shop is at the entrance as you come in to pay.
A lovely , Out of the way place to visit.

We thoroughly enjoyed our visit today.
Paul, was very welcoming and knowledgeable.
Very well kept grounds and interesting history..
Well worth a visit.
Also, dog friendly.
We will bring our grandchildren next time.
Lots of space for play acting, “weapons” available in the shop.
Audio and history available.
Picnic tables to use for refreshments.

Visited here recently, we didn't pre book online as we didn't know what the weather would be like and most of the Fort is outside, so were charged a slightly higher entry price on the day. Car parking is limited but it was free. We had an enjoyable visit wandering around the Fort at our own pace. We felt that some more information boards would have been good especially some facts about the guns. There are a few picnic benches and toilets available inside the Fort and a small gift shop too.

Wow what a find. Who knew such a stunning historic place was tucked away between the industrial buildings and port services ! It is an English Heritage site
We chanced upon it yesterday while we were waiting to start work at the docks (for Saga Cruises)
We were early and went for a walk along the river by the Worlds End pub. We saw the fort which is much bigger than we imagined and so impressive.
Luckily for us they had just opened the huge oak doors and we popped inside. Hannah, a very personable young lady, allowed us to take a quick peak though we explained we couldn’t stay for more than a few minutes ( work was beckoning)
We will definitely be coming back and take a much better look at such an amazing place.

Historic Fort associated with Queen Elizabeth 1. Grassy embankments, lovely views over the Thames, picnic tables, gun placements, period guns and Gunpowder Stores. Pleasant day out and seemed to be appreciated by the children visiting, many of whom rolled down the grassy banks with great enthusiasm! The guns appeared to be a point of fascination for all ages!
Nice clean toilets on site. Very small shop. Very friendly staff at reception. All in all a very pleasant visit.

Im thinking of visiting but it says restricted areas for dogs. Where can dogs go? It’s a long way to travel if you can’t see very much. Thank you :-)
Is it free?

Yes dogs are allowed in restricting areas so I am sure the staff will tell you
I'm thinking of taking my disabled father (who is in a wheelchair) and children (8yrs old and 10yrs old)...is it worth visiting on a rainy day or will it be too inaccessible for my father?

I was very fragile when I visited as post op I walked slowly around the parade ground went in the gunpowder room and read all the history went into the house didn't go up stairs. The audio guide is great so I then sat on a bench and listened to the stories while my family did the hills and guns so had fun watching them. It was a lovely day I agree it would be bleak on a rainy day had no shelter.
