This is an easy two day drive through some interesting countryside, with panoramic vistas, scenic creeks, pleasant bushland walks of varying duration and numerous picnic spots, some with toilet facilities. Regrettably, pristine wilderness it is not. Much of the eastern part of the drive is through Forestry land that was logged decades ago and still retains the scars of that devastation (monoculture regrowth). Roadside signs proudly proclaim old growth forests reserved for future use (logging) or advice when the area was last logged, as though it was some badge of honour. The west coast is slightly more interesting, although spoiled by the ‘shacks’ built on a few of the sheltered beachside coves. Waves roll in from the southern ocean with such force the headlands and beaches almost reverberate underneath. Signage, both on the roadside and at the off road attractions, is barely adequate. Ultimately it’s about managing expectations - to me, ‘the Tarkine’ denotes pristine wilderness and large swaths of temperate rainforest almost untouched by humans for millennia. Sorry, if that’s what you were expecting then you’ve come to the wrong place.

The Tarkine is a legendary natural environment; The Tarkine can be found in Tasmania's north-west. Australia's island State. The Tarkine is adjacent to the town of Arthur River. Wildlife abounds. Compared to the Australian mainland, Tasmania is a relatively small island. The Tarkine is treasured by Australians; it's a reminder of ancient Tasmania, in times gone by. You can drive or hike to explore The Tarkine.

2 hr drive on bitumin road. Some tracks off the main area onto gravel. Delightful rainforest. The Trowatta Arch us a must and the sink-hole. No fuel stops so make sure you fill up before you go and take drinks and eats. No shops. A must do in Tassie. Stayed at Tall Timbers and drove down.

A wonderful scenic drive taking in some varied landscape. Not quite as spectacular in summer I think than the wet season. Some parts of the road are very rutted and uneven.

You can do a circular route if you go via Arthur River. A four wheel drive vehicle is not required. In some parts the road is fairly twisty and some of the bridges are single lane. It's a very scenic drive that has many lookouts and stopping points with toilets.

We took this drive from Stanley to Stanley, after picking up some food for a picnic lunch along the route.
Plenty of places to stop and enjoy the changing landscape - from the roaring majesty of the Edge of The World in Arthur River to the slow-moving creeks and easy walks of the lookouts & sinkholes and then the often starkness of the forestry clearings which is a necessary but unfortunate part of Tasmania.
We took about 5 -6 hours all up, with a number of stops but we didn't do any of the longer walks, so you would need to factor in your level of "exploration" when planning your day...not too many options for food or petrol either, so consider this when organizing your trip also.

Worth a look, but lower your expectations.
Too much forestry and farming which has decimated a once pristine wilderness.

We started this fantastic circuit in Smithton after picking up a very useful map and information pamphlet from the Tourist Information Centre which is located in the Duck River Pavilions.
The circuit starting and ending at Smithton and travelling to Arthur River (on the coast) via Marrawah and then down to Couta Rocks (also on the coast) before heading inland to Kanunnah Bridge, Dempster Plains, Tayalea Bridge and Trowutta Arch was approximately 230 kilometres. You could drive further if you went into all of the lookouts, walks, Lake Chisolm and other points of interest highlighted on the Tourist Drive pamphlet. We spent the best part of a day, noting that it was winter with reduced sunlight areas, completing the circuit and visited most lookouts, did some short walks at Julius River and to the Trowutta Arch but didn't do any of the longer walks such as the Balfour Packhorse Track or visit Lake Chisholm.
The scenery was nothing short of stunning from the dramatic windswept, rugged coastal areas, to the views of the meandering Arthur River at various stages as it progressed from the hills to the ocean, the Dempster grassland plains and the walks through cool temperate rainforest at Julius River and to reach the Trowutta Arch.
The main circuit road was sealed for its entire length however some of the roads to the coastal points of interest and some of the lookouts and Trowutta Arch were unsealed and comprised of a mix of compressed dirt and/or gravel. There were some picnic areas and toilet facilities at some of the stops but petrol stations were few and far between and mobile coverage was sporadic.
Highly recommended.

Make sure you allow plenty of time to do this drive. Especially if you are going to do the longer walks. We had to miss the longer walks as we there was not enough day light to to do them all at this time of year

I’m from Philadelphia. PA, USA, and was so happy to have this tour of the Tarkine area. Rob is a very knowledgeable guide who comes from the area and knows it well. His tour was filled with knowledge, wit, humor, local customs, and it was a thoroughly enjoyable tour. There wasn’t one question that he didn’t thoroughly answer. He provided a gourmet tea and lunch (on a white tablecloth too!), and he took us to all the little but incredibly beautiful places that are off the beaten path. When we stopped at certain places he knew where there might be special animals (such as platypus) and could spy aquatic life in streams that I’d never have known were there. These tours are very worthwhile while, and meant we could focus on the area and not on driving on unfamiliar roads. I recommend these tours to everyone.

Are there any concerns with vehicle break-ins while walking in these area? We have had previous bad experiences in national park car parks
Skrevet 11. juni 2023
sorry to hear you had a bad experience. When we were visiting the Tasmania we had no issues.

how long is the Western Explorer Road? We will have a large motorhome and would like to know if the road is suitable in September.
Skrevet 19. august 2018
I think Western Explorer is only 77k. It's gravel and suitable for 2WD. I strongly suggest though confirming conditions with Arthur River Parks and Wildlife Service. You can Google their office. Their rangers monitor all conditions around tarkine. Just for a piece of mind. The Western Explorer is great, take your time, have some side walks and enjoy the remoteness.
Skrevet 20. august 2018
Is the road totally sealed? We can't take a rental car on unsealed roads.
Skrevet 13. juni 2018
Yes. the main loop is sealed. If you decide to do a Western Explorer road, please note that although unsealed, this road is suitable for 2WD cars.
