Was shown around parts of the museum by a great chap called Patrick. We were lucky to be shown the ballroom and step out onto the balcony. He discussed artist and mayors with us and myself and my mum had a great time . He had a great sense of humour. Made the museum visit special . Keep up the good work mr museum( sorry Patrick)😀

I never expected anything this good in a town of relatively modest size. The museum had some excellent pieces, including the locked ballot box at one time carried through the streets on election day. The restored 18th century Assembly Room was exquisite and reminded me of the drawing rooms I’d seen while visiting Bath -- except that here one sees the room alone or in a small group and can feel the atmosphere. Your neck aches from staring up at the beautifully patterned ceiling.

My sister and I were fortunate enough to be shown the museum and the adjacent art gallery by a very knowledgeable docent, another volunteer, Ms. Corrie Moss. She knew so much about the building, its history, including the local government meeting room, a narrow neighbouring building (which had housed the first toilet in Newark!), and she described some local events such as the balcony visible nearby where William Gladstone, the onetime MP here, made his first speech. Again, I was surprised by the quality of art in the gallery, including some Nicholsons. It was much more than I’d ever expected to see in an art gallery in a town of Newark’s size.

Thought this would just be another quick look round a local museum but with the very iformative guide it was much more, we were taken to see the ballroom and mayors chambers

Stumbled upon this hidden little gem with my two young children on a raining day.
Lovely little museum where my kids enjoyed dressing up as the Mayor .
Run by lovely volunteers but must give a special thanks to Patrick , who kindly showed us round including the thinnist house and was lovely with my kids answering all their questions.
Great views of the beautiful market place . In all the years I've lived in the area I never knew the museum was here.

The Art Gallery/museum is on the 2nd floor- when I was there a lovely display of work by a local artist who works in felt. Emphasis is on local works. But you can also ask to be shown around the Georgian Ballroom, which is jaw droppingly beautiful, lovingly restored. You get shown round by a volunteer, and in my case this was a charming gent with lots of local knowledge. An unexpected delight.

The Museum & Art Gallery is located on the second floor of the Town Hall. Access by lift is available. I walked but the stairs are narrow and it's quite a climb. However, the effort was well worth it.

The Museum & Art Gallery is small, but excellent use is made of the space available without making it feel cramped. On the day of my visit, a knowledgeable guide was on hand.

The Gallery houses quite a number of fine paintings, some by local artists - Robert Kiddey for example - as well as works by Stanley Spencer and William Nicholson for eaxmple. Sculptures and other works are also displayed as well a collection of Mayoral regalia.

The Spotlight Gallery features temporary exhibitions which change monthly. At the time of my visit, it was 'The Drawn Fleece' by Diana Rawson, an exhibition of felted wall hangings in natural sheep shades of black, brown and cream.

As I was about to leave, the guide asked if I would like to see the Ballroom, on the lower floor. I'm glad I said yes because it has been magnificently restored to near it's 18th Century condition. It is no longer used for Balls, but can be hired for functions such,as weddings, receptions, family events etc.

The Town Hall building was built in 1774 but sadly was clad in scaffolding when I visited, though it appeared that the scaffolding was being removed.

All in all, very well worth a visit.

Upstairs in the Buttermarket (currently decorated with renovation scaffolding in the market centre) is Newark's town museum which displays civic robes and artefacts, art from local artists over the years + a contemporary exhibition, and numerous portraits of past dignitaries and mayors. A personal guided tour down to the first floor to the mayor's chambers, council room, and fabulous assembly/ballroom made this a highlight of my visit to Newark.

Walking through the indoor Butter Market from the market place, you will find the Town Hall Museum and Art Gallery. This is a gem that must be visited. Take the lift though if you cannot manage the steep winding staircases. The art galleries are small but wonderful, taking in new artists and then the gallery showing pieces from older more established artists. You are also able to dress up if you wish (both adults and children). There is also the Civic Gallery displaying the robes and many photographs of past Mayors. However, the real gem is visiting the Town Hall which you have to be taken to with a guide. Here you can visit the Lord Mayor's Parlour and view the chains of office and the maces , the Council Room and the absolutely stunning Ballroom. This room with its marbles, pillars topped with gold leaf, huge chandelier and the most beautiful ceiling is breathtaking. This is a definite must to visit.

We went in as we have passed it many times and not had a look. It was lovely! The 2 guides were friendly and very knowledgeable. They talked to us about the permanent and temporary exhibitions. One even showed us where the old prisons were. It is free to get in and gives a small insight into famous people of the area. I am surprised more people don't go round.
