Right next door to the National Gallery , a five minute walk next door. Mostly enjoyed the current selection, although I found one heavily featured artist to be a bit woke ( I guess a sign of the times)

I really lovely place to visit, a mix of traditional and contemporary art with a focus on portraiture. We visited to see the exhibition of the Darling Prize and the National Photographic Portrait Prize, both of which are thought provoking and well displayed. The gallery is large with a decent cafe and shop so leave enough time to fully enjoy.

It was a last minute decision to visit the portrait gallery and i am glad we did. It was great- such a variety of portraits and I especially loved the one of Maggie Beer. There was a section dedicated to lite athletes/Olympians, which was good. At the time of visiting there was a unique mural series at the entrance by an Aboriginal artist, which was very interesting and also the children's portrait competition was on display. I recommend you do the tour- it went for 30 mins but I honestly could have listened to her for hours.

Its an unusual building, we had decided to walk across from the National Gallery and somehow lost our bearings until a helpful security guard pointed us in the right direction through the car park at the lower level. I couldn't but wonder why the ceiling was at such a high level, perhaps to accommodate multi deck vehicles. Once through the entry, its more contemporary, collections displayed across eight galleries. Impressed by the pencil drawing of Teen Blooming by a local Busselton artist Emma Leta Gleeson, the print of Lee Lin Chin invoked memories of her time on SBS, Crown Princess Mary of Denmark looking very elegant and regal, Julie Dowling's portrait of Richard Walle and Del Kathryn Bartons portrait of Maggie Beer AO. Great cafe on the premises to enjoy a refresher before heading elsewhere.

Great place to visit and you don't have to be an arty person.
Some of the portraits are amazing.
We highly enjoyed our visit, it is a self tour.

I dropped in after a morning visit to the NGA next door. It is free to enter. Quite interesting portraits but not a huge gallery. I would not make a special visit but worth dropping in when you are in this area.

We obviously visited at a time when there were no special exhibits on display. Indeed we were told in our Parliament House tour that one of the PM’s portraits was on loan to the NP gallery. It was not on display. Mostly uninspiring, uninteresting self portraits. The gift shop was far too small for the amount of stock and customers. Ditto the cafe. It was raining so not all outside tables were available but devoting a little more space to these squeezy facilities would assist more social distancing. Sadly, a big disappointment and we would not return unless there was the prospect of an enticing special showing.

Fabulous, fabulous collection of Archibald Prize entrants. They’re not all winners but you can’t help thinking many that weren’t, should have been.
I’ve always found Archibald pieces either loveable at first sight or detestable - with very little in between. This collection has a fine balance of both.
The exhibit is arranged thematically. Not sure if that put pressure on wall space as a few pieces were poorly lit. Hopefully somebody pointed that out to them.

There can be few better places for us to spend some time than here. We get to see wonderful artwork and learn about famous Australians. There is also a fabulous bookshop and great cafe. What more could anyone want?
