The only way to visit South Solitary Island is by a pre-booked tour with Precision Helicopters which includes a 2 hour guided tour on the island by the National Parks and Wildlife Service.
It’s a fantastic tour, lots to see on the island with a lot of history. Well worth it.

Nice relaxing veranda overlooking the Nambucca River. Beautiful, fresh seafood from the bistro at reasonable prices. A great place to spend a few hours.

Great fishing spot on the coast side of the island. We went with KC's Fishing Charters and they knew all the good spots. Lot's of fish!

This ticks so many boxes:
history, helicopter ride, whales, incredible scenery from a different perspective.
We came away absolutely blown away. Don't think about it....just do it

Thank you so much for visiting this historic abandoned island. It is such an emotional place and hard to describe to people before they visit. Yes, it has all that you mentioned... and more. Hope to have you visit again, or made do some volunteer work out there and spend a few nights and see another perspective of the island. Thanks again.

We dived South Solitary and Angie got to see her first sharks underwater and her first turtles!! Put a big smile on her face indeed.
The dive was excellently guided by Jetty Dive on the "Blue Fin" purpose built dive boat. Excellent platform for a dive and good skipper and crew.
We dived the gutter between South Solitary and Birdie Island first and then went in at the top of Birdie Island and did a drift dive along the western edge of Birdie to the mooring point just off Sth Solitary.
sea life is prolific and amazing.

This is one of the greatest experiences on the Coffs Coast! The helicopter trip and guided tour on the island only run for two weekends per year in August and I finally booked for this year. The helicopter flight was fantastic with Precision Helicopters landing us safely on the island for a two hour tour with Uncle Mark a well-known and greatly respected Aboriginal elder working for the NSW Department of Parks and Wildlife Services.
We went up the three flights of stairs to the top of the lighthouse for fantastic views of the ocean and coastline and then toured the grounds and lighthouse keeper's cottages with uncle Mark and met Brian who lived on the island in the 1950s. Brian kindly shared his experiences as a child on this isolated island that included fishing and rabbiting to survive particularly if the boats carrying their food supplies were not able to reach the island due to stormy weather -what an amazing life it must have been. The whales also arrived on cue and provided a spectacular show on what can only be described as a fabulous three hours.
If there is an environment-loving philanthropist out there somewhere - please consider supporting the restoration of the Lighthouse Keepers homes to preserve the heritage and the history of the island. Highly recommended - put it on your bucket list for 2019!!

You have summed up the tour perfectly. Thank you so much for visiting this special place. It is hard to put the tour into words, conveying the emotion of the island and all the history....it is a truly remarkable place and we are so glad you finally got the chance to visit.
We hope to have you back again on the island to see the progress of the volunteers group (Friends of South Solitary Island Lighthouse) and NSW National Parks & Wildlife. The maintenance and restoration work is an ongoing challenge, so your visit helps with the refurbishment of these historic buildings.
Thank you once again.

Very good diving location with abundant sea life including turtles and the odd seal. Diving the split is also very exciting.

We have dived off the solitary islands with one of the dive crews that work from Mullaway and had a great time. There can be a fair amount of current around the islands but with a good dive master you should be fine. There is an amazing and diverse range of sea life and you could spend days exploring there.

Beautiful scenic flight right over the top of the island. It is undoubtedly a lovely part of the world! Island is just a few kilometers out to sea.

South Solitary Island is approximately 8km's from the mainland - the closest point is Emerald Beach. It is amazing to see the Lighthouse Island from the air, all the Solitary Islands are fantastic from both the sea and air. Thanks for visiting the Coffs Harbour area.

This island and lighthouse are only open a few times each year and transport is helicopter. It's not cheap, but the history is worth the cost.

The keeper's buildings and lighthouse on South Solitary Island are the oldest in the area (built in 1879-1880), the history is of the island is wonderful and hard to imagine how families lived out there. Flying by helicopter is always fun too! Thanks for visiting and hope you can return again one day.

Hello Col. The island is not open for tours in January. The island is closed to visitors from August to March as it is bird nesting season on the island. Tours are generally only held for two weekends per year (usually July). Go to the island website and add your email to the mailing list so you can be informed of tours when they are released. Thanks again for taking an interest in this special place. Regards, Jo
