Today we visited Garden Island. It is
only open on a Sunday. We were told there would be ships and interesting things to see. There weren’t. The cafe was closed and the view non-existent because of tall trees and smog due to bushfires. We could not leave fast enough. Has the exciting stuff that others have mentioned been moved elsewhere? It certainly wasn’t there today... Maybe this venue should be closed until the works are complete and it has more to offer. We were very disappointed.

The Royal Australian Navy Heritage Centre / Museum located in the public access area of Garden Island is one of the city's best kept secrets. It's a short ferry ride from Circular Quay (as of Nov 2019, only open on Sundays due to building works). Entry is free. There's lots to see - both inside and outside of the main museum building. The exhibits are well laid out (telling the history of the RAN from its establishment to present times) and well signed. Highly recommended to visit (and quiet, given it's not a well known attraction)!

Tip, be sure to check out the view from the roof of the old signals building located at the top end of the gardens.

At the time of writing (May 2019), this is only accessible on a Sunday because it is only accessible by ferry. It's a very short trip from Circular Quay.

Located at the northern end of the Garden Island Naval Base, the museum is very well laid out with over 9000 artifacts. I was greeted by a lone security guard at the ferry jetty who gave me the rundown and pointed me in the right direction.

Early on Sunday morning, I was literally the only person in the place until somebody arrived on the information desk a while after I arrived. According to the guard they had about 130 people through the previous Sunday.

Most of the items are inside with just a few larger things like gun barrels outside. Due to a heavy rain shower I was not able to explore outside. It's worth heading up the hill to the observation tower that has spectacular views across Sydney. Apparently it used to be taller when it was a signalling station but the upper floors were removed some years ago.

Ferries come approx every half hour.

It is free to visit.

We discovered Garden Island on the way to visit Doyle's at Watson's Bay via the ferry. We intended to stay for an hour but stayed for two and could have stayed longer. The free Naval Museum is informative and entertaining. There is a cafe and some great spots for a picnic. Make sure you walk to the top a see the spectacular views. Also the 1788 rock carvings.

Almost every tourist and Sydneysider sails past this place and almost none know they can visit it! This is spot is the former Naval Signals station on Garden Island Naval Base, now turned into a park / picnic ground and home of the Naval Heritage Museum, Sydney. Getting there is only by ferry and you need to take the Watsons bay service. Be careful with your ferry timings as they run hourly on weekends. Upon arrival, you will be met by the duty security officer and given a breif about what you can and cannot do on the island. As this is still part of an operational base, rules apply and you'd best obey them. The museum is a wonderfull collection of artifacts from Australian naval history from colonial days to the present. There are items from the mess hall to electronics, sorrowful to humourous. The museum contains the centre section of one of the three midget submarines that attacked in Sydney harbour during WWII and is a memorial point for the family of the Japanese sailors who piloted it. Outside there is an exhibit of naval artillery and radars, along with the lifting gear and control cabin of the Garden Island Hammerhead Crane. The real gem of this spot is the view from the top of the former signals tower and the gardens that surround it. From the tower you can get 360 degree views of the harbour, looking right up to Watsons bay. The grounds are sheltered and contain numerous benches and little snippets of history. Barbeques and tables are available but I would advise checking with the museum to see that they are functional.
If you wanted to pack a picnic and eat yourself silly by the harbour without crowds, in fact with only a handful of others around, this is the place. There is a cafe in the museum, however it is only open on weekdays so weekends are totaly self catering. Take a few hours to find this spot and enjoy it's location while you watch the unknowing people go past!

We were fortunate to have a clear sunny day for our visit.
Pleasant ferry ride to and from Circular Quay - return by catamaran for us!

Take a guided tour and discover all the information that is to be had from this establishment. Museum is full of fascination.

Wonderful to see evidence of the history of our past in Sydney.

Tourists are in fact permitted to visit the end point of Garden Island, which is an active Naval Base. The only way off and on is by using the Sydney Ferry service.
We went to Garden Island at around 2pm and were given strict instructions to be back down at the ferry terminal before the last ferry.
With that in mind we went and had a nice toasted sandwich and coffee at the café before exploring the Naval Museum. The museum is excellent with a fine display of Australian Naval history. I loved the submarine periscope which you could see the harbour and surrounds with. Very cool!
We also walked through the lovely gardens which have seating and Bbqs for visitors to enjoy. Garden Island was so named as it was literally the place where vegetables were grown for the early colony.
It also has Australia's first tennis court built in 1880 and still in use today. It is well worth having a walk to the top of the old signal station which gives you spectacular 360 degree views over the harbour. It is the only place where you can take a photo of Mrs Macquarie's Chair, the Opera House and the Harbour Bridge in one scene.
What enhanced our visit to Garden Island was watching to Fur Seals playing and eating on the point with not a care in the world. Great to the harbour being so clean and attracting sea life.

Most Sydneysiders don't know that Garden Island is open for visits. While it is still in use by the Navy you can access one side of it by ferry. It is very interesting to see the historical aspects and there is an amazing naval museum and a reasonable cafe. We only had one hour so didn't get to walk around much. I think you could easily spend two hours here. We got there as one of the stop signs on a Captain Cook Hop-on, Hop-off cruise but I think there are other options

A short ferry trip to the wharf gives the highlights of Sydney Harbour. From the wharf we were greeted and given the lowdown of the visitor areas of Garden Island as it is an active naval base. The museum is modern and has interesting displays. We spent about an hour to one and half hours. There were only three in the museum. The gardens are worth the visit. A short walk with step taken you to a roof top which has 360 degree view!! This is worth the price of the ferry.
