Nurses Walk is a lovely spot. It has quite a bit of history behind its narrow little alleyways. It was created in 1979 to honour the hospital nurses who worked in this area towards the end of the 18th century. Now it is full of interesting galleries, cafes, restaurants, souvenir and other shops. Definitely worth wandering around.

Lots of shops and sights, but paves is uneven and hilly. Walk carefully and don’t rush. There is plenty to see and do.

Our walking tour of Sydney took us down this narrow lane. Historic buildings on either side. You could almost feel the history, especially with the guide telling interesting and amusing stories.

The area is in the process of being gentrified, so tere is no shortage of galleries, boutiques, and trendy eating establishments, but underneath it all are the reverberations of a pretty sordid history.

Certainly worth a wander if you are in the area, but I would hurry through the area to see the harbour views from the Rocks.

With several old buildings and small laneways, it’s worth taking in this area when visiting the Rocks. There’s several information plaques covering the history of the area, albeit the older metal ones are readable but the newer one (which presumably is the broader introduction to the area and the name) is quite faded.

This is a walk that any traveller interested in history should take. My wife and I are both nurses and so it was with professional interest that we embarked through narrow by-ways to walk in the footsteps of our predecessors.

This series of back alleys/lanes is located in the Rocks area of the city and in very close proximity to the Harbour Rocks Hotel where we were staying. One of the main lanes is called Suez Canal (formerly sewerage canal for obvious reason). The wall plaques provide information on the name of the lanes. Nurses Walk was originally the lane/s between the hospitals in this area. Due to their historical links, these passageways are well worth visiting when in this part of Sydney.
