It was good to learn the history of Bare Island. To reflect on how the soldiers used it to overlook and protect Botany Bay. It was later used as a war veterans home. We were also told the history of how La Perouse was colonised. I recommend this tour to anyone who enjoys learning about Australian history.

Taken here with my niece and her kiddos. The place is so peaceful. The weather when we got there was just perfect! We noticed that some spots has been used for pre-wedding shoots. We saw some guys try to catch some fish as well. Will come again once I find myself in Sydney!

Firstly - be warned about parking - the NSWPWS website blithely says 'free on street parking', which is true - but given that tours are ONLY run on Sundays (bar January which has Friday and Sunday tours), a weekend of reasonable weather sees this whole area JAM-PACKED with vehicles and it is extremely difficult to find a space without driving around for some good long time. There are no alternative 'paid' car parks either, so in order to arrive 15 mins early as instructed, you need to leave LOTS of time to find a space and/or walk a long way. ALSO there is no fresh water (no refill stations) or toilets on the island. The tour runs around 40-50 mins, so work out how far you have walked from your car and whether your family are able to cope!
Our Ranger was perfectly competent, giving a very brief history of the 'island', which is very minimal - no signs of any aboriginal occupation apparently, but if there had been, they may have been wiped out when the Fort was built, just over 100 years ago (1885 was the year it is marked as opened).
Views across to the commercial areas of docks and, further away, Sydney's CBD aren't really so special a photographer will get anything exceptional. The city's Westfield (old Centrepoint) Tower is visible, but hey, it is from anywhere.
Everything at the Fort is run down and derelict with just a couple of cannon left. There is a 'private' area where, presumably, the full-time caretaker, has a space. It's a concrete fort, with no exceptional merits in regards to architecture or special features. Essentially it was a Fort built to ward off the Russians, who never came, so there were exercises that took place there but it was never used in anger. Thereafter as a home for retired service personnel, it must have been a rather grim place to live, with occupants wearing their uniforms every day, and those suffering from the equivalent of PTSD (then called shell shock) going about their daily tasks feeling of value as they were encouraged to 'keep watch' over the harbour.
This sadly neglected piece of history in Sydney Harbour does not look as though it will get any uplifting injections any time soon. It's been used as a film set on a number of occasions, it can be hired for special occasions (but why it would be escapes me) as a venue - but all in all a rather disappointing wander around.
If it were safer - the Earthquake centred on Newcastle some years ago, reverberated all the way down to the Fort and cracked some walls which have subsequently been shored up - the public would probably STILL be allowed, for free, to wander around.
As it is, the safety aspect is the crucial element of members of the public only being allowed on the island with a guide, who urges you to keep together in a bunch. So, no wandering off to take those arty images! Dilapidated, disappointing, a sad old place. Don't make a special trip.

If you are around La Perouse area, it’s a time well spent understanding history of this island. Fort is very basic.

I like history so I really enjoyed this tour. Frankie was very knowledgeable and made the tour entertaining despite the relentless heat. There’s also great views back to the mainland from the top of the fort. I particularly enjoyed the old photos in the captain’s office

When we arrived to Bare Island Fort by bus, we explored the rocks surrounding the Bare Rock first. These rock formations were amazing! Many people were snorkeling in the bay as there are many sea animals in that bay. It’s dangerous, 4 people died doing this.
Our guide came 10 minutes early and he opened the door to the fortress. He explained everything about this Bare Island Fort. Captain Cook found this island and called it Bare Island.
Many years later, when Australia was a country, they built a fortress with three canons. It was a protection against any enemies.
It was decommissioned. The veterans were invited to sleep on this bare rock with three meals per day for free.
We saw some beautiful views and we enjoyed our guide who was well knowledgeable. We enjoyed this time on the Bare Island.

After reading such brilliant reviews we decided to take a look at Bare Island after previousy visting Fort Scratchley in Newcastle. It was easy to purchase tickets on line so that we could grab an early lunch prior to our vist. They are open for tours at 1.30 , 2.30 and 3.30. In all honesty although the guide was lovely she was terrible and not even interested in making it a believable tour. The information was limited as was the tour. If you are going to talk history at least research a little.👎
Save your money and take the time to vist Fort Scratchly .
