Human Touch Missing
mar. 2020
I like technology but it would be nice to be able to talk to a real human being, only not listening to a monologue from a tablet whilst taking a tour of this awesome place. Council should make real effort in cleaning adjacent streets.

Not what I expected
jan. 2020
I was a bit disappointed with Elizabeth Farm. Upon reflection, I think this is due to 2 reasons. Firstly, I was the only solo visitor on a guided tour full of families with little children who seemed more interested in running riot that learning some Australian history in one of the oldest buildings in the country. Secondly, the house is furnished with placeholder furniture which is designed to be touched/sat on/played with etc. While this makes the house more accessible, it also meant there was no real historic atmosphere or sense of connection to those days in the early 1800s when one of the most influential men in NSW lived here. I know it is important for heritage places to not just be old furniture gatehring dust behind barriers and display cases but I felt at Elizabeth Farm they have gone to the other extreme where it felt a bit fake to be honest. The staff were all lovely though; it just turned out not to be the attraction for me.

Presented extremely well.

I have often said that this is the most idyllic place in the Sydney area and I do love this building. It seems to me now that it has been cleaned up and perhaps overly so. It is all slick and span on the outside and the tour guide is an iPad. I did not use it but my husband did. The rooms are well presented and furnished of the period. It is an extensive house. And the gardens are wonderful. So it was worth the hike from the station even though Parramatta council does its best to hide its historic buildings or at least not put up much in the way of signage. Perhaps they will when they have finished rebuilding the CBD!!!Anyway, I still like it.

Large house with cellar showing marked brick collection.
Named after Macarthur’s wife.
200 acres were granted and used to successfully breed sheep
suited to the land, becoming the biggest sheep owner in the colony by the 1800s.

Historical homestead in Rosehill
mai 2019
This historic homestead is a reminder of the way early settlers lived in Sydney. The daily routines of life are captured here. A great place for the young to explore and be informed about.

Excellent historic attraction outside of Sydney CBD
aug. 2019
Actually, a lot of the European history of Sydney and Australia is located in the Parramatta area, and if you are visiting it is worth the easy trip out of the CBD, eg on the train or better the ferry. And this historic house is worth the visit. Best to come when the tour is on, and you can sit in the lounge room and listen to tales of old told with passion. The furniture is all replica, so the ubiquitous "do not touch" does not apply here. Even n winter you might be able to sit in front of the fire and hear those tales. Consider with a visit to Old Government House and the Dairy in Parramatta park. And to compliment your visit, there are great restaurants and cafe's in Parramatta, which is a bit of a hidden gem for most visitors who only see central Sydney.

Terrific look at times gone by.

The restful homestead hides a dark and stormy past. This farm has seen the major events in the growth of the colony. Its an easy walk from Harris Park railway station. Hemmed in by suburban sprawl it shines as a beacon of architecture and the times.

Surprised me, The iPad tour made it so interesting. You can TOUCH everything! Really experience it, A MUST do!
jun. 2019
I really enjoyed this, it wasn’t boring at all. The iPad tells you while you’re in each room, what has happened here, a daughter was quarantined here for scarlet fever, what happened in the next room? Sit down on the chairs and listen to Gary McDonald take you into another time and place, nothing stuffy or boring, quite fascinating and a few laughs.... can you find where the knuckle bones are? You can hold them, remember playing jacks at school....the old coal range and the large dining room. The many rooms, old high beds, all set up as a house, you can ring the servant bells, can you find where they all ring? Or sit on one of the beautiful patios in a cane chair, or marvel at the wooden wash buckets and old clothes in the courtyard. See the well worn pavers and wonder at the many feet that caused the beautiful paths in the stone.... Wander the gardens and soak in the atmosphere. Which child can find the prickly pear cacti? I’m so pleased I visited here, it wasn’t just another tour, it’s a memory I’ll have forever. Michel at the entrance used to be a tour guide and has a treasure of wonderful places to visit in Parramatta, Thanks Michel....

An historic gem
apr. 2019 • Venner
An easy, level 15 minute walk from Harris Park station, this house, constructed in 1793 with later additions, is one of the oldest buildings in Australia. It has been nicely maintained and, although regrettably now hemmed in by the surrounding and rather uninspiring suburbia, it is an historic gem and a very valuable insight into the life which the early settlers lead. Our guide was excellent - knowledgeable, friendly and with a pleasant manner and good sense of humour - and we enjoyed our tour thoroughly. It was particularly noteworthy that visitors are actually encouraged to sit on and try out the furnishings, which is very unusual in a museum such as this.

Hambleton Cottage was closed to we went to Elizabeth Farm instead and tried to get a combined ticket for several places but the lady sold us just a single and said she was deaf and had not heard the request. The guide who took us round the house was however excellent and we really enjoyed the visit and talk about the history of the house, family and settlement.
We went back to Hambleton Cottage when it was open but the woman was a bit offhand so we didn't waste our money going in.
