The views at the top are fantastic. Every direction has something different. Alice Springs township in front, the east and west MacDonnell Ranges looking impressively sci fi, and the weirdness of Pine Gap over the back.
The trail is clear once you're on it. But these days it seems to be discouraged by the authorities. The start at Flynns Grave somewhat underwhelming. What a shame! Don't be put off my friends. A steep and fun climb not to be missed.

We finally climbed to the top, the trail itself is pretty well established, as we were told, where it forks, the right is a bit gentler than the left, but much like Rome, all roads lead to the top. There is a bit that requires hands, so if you're limited, you may want to stop at that point. At the peak is a marker, and views of Alice Springs and the surrounds. Even on a cool day, take water, and maybe a snack for energy. We walk ~10ks daily, and it was still some effort, so if your activity level is more towards the couch potato zone, perhaps just walk the trail from Flynn's Grave t Desert Park or beyond.

This is not for the average walker, or should I say, not the last part of this climb anyway. The walk up this trail is littered with wonderful spots to view the amazing sunsets on offer in Alice Springs. Allow yourself at least 45 minutes from the car park to the top of the climb, particularly if you are setting up for photos. This a something I am really glad I was able to do and would recommend to anyone.

i have done plenty of hiking and this is definitely one of the more challenging things I have done.
Finding the start is not obvious - from the John Flynn monument car park, stay on the same side on the road and go away from Alice Springs. You will quickly see a gate on the left which is the start of the track.
The challenging part is at the end - both up and down - it is a scramble on a vertical rock face and the path is not clear.
I would recommend hiking poles and good boots.
Saw a few discarded water bottles - need a back pack as you can't carry anything when scrambling.
Worth it, but be warned.

This is a fabulous walk with a challenging climb at the end up the rock face to reach the top, and then a further flat 500m to the Trig point where you can enjoy stunning 360 degree views of Alice Springs and surrounds, the East and West MacDonnells, including Mt Sonder

I have done this walk about 6 times. This time I took friends up with my 10yr old & 12yr old. They found it challenging and a little scary at times. The gently incline does cause shortness of breath if you are unfit. The small rocks are quite slippery in parts. My friends actually tumbled on the way down causing her to split her chin open & required it being glued in ED. Just keep in mind so many people take this track regularly and it can be quite dangerous. If you take your time and step carefully it has amazing views from the top. I would not recommend for children under 10yrs if not experienced hikers. Wear sensible walking sneakers or hiking boots.

We started out at about 4PM from the car park and followed the trail through the desert park, eventually getting to the summit at about 5 30, in time for sunset. It is quite tough going, especially as it was still hot at 4 PM, and there is a bit of rock climbing at the end, but the views and the sense of achievement were well worth it.

Mount Gillen is gorgeous scenery and even better to climb. Was a challenging hike up for low endurance but enough places to rest along the way. There would be some incline for a bit and then flatten out long enough for you to catch your breath and continue going. Towards the top of the trail, it gets to a point where you climb up rocks using your arms and your legs to get up. The view of the town, desert, and the other ranges are worth the hike. I highly suggest visiting Mount Gillen and climbing it if you get the chance.

Is there a path to follow to climb mount Gillen? If so where does it start?

Go through the gate about 100 m west of the monument at Flynns grave, and follow the path that leads generally west.
If you miss the path continue west until you meet the old fence that runs north-south due north of the summit. Follow the track along the fence south to its southern end. From here on the path is well-defined, though in places there are alternatives. The path goes over a saddle on prominent spur north west of the summit and then climbs up to a small gully that provides a way up through the cliffs. A short scramble up the gully leads to the ridge. From here it is an easy walk east to the summit cairn.

Can we camp on Mount Gillen?

Hi,
Technically camping is not permitted on the top of Mt Gillen, as it is not in any way a designated camp area, having said that people have done it before, if you carry some light camping gear up and are prepared for a windy night there is no physical reason you cant camp there as it is not patrolled, your car is in more danger of being looted in the car parking area at the bottom of the mountain overnight so if you can get a lift to the car park. Also please do not use any sort of fire up there, even a small gas burner, as there area is covered with very dry grass and one spark would send the fire all along the range,(you cant use your burner in your tent either) then you would defiantly draw some attention,Also the ground is rock, so there is no place to bury your waste, so that will cause problems for a long time and the Dingoes will spread it all around, not good, last thing you will be visited all night by inquisitive Dingoes looking to steal anything that they can, and they will nose right into your tent if they can, which might interrupt any chance of getting a good night sleep.
I would not camp up there.
Plenty of better camping in the West Mac Donnell Ranges
