Located right on the river at one end of southbank.

Good collection of marine exhibits, lighthouse display is really good. Concentrates on merchant marine rather navy.

Star of the show is the Diamantina in dry dock. Wonderful to wander through it and be thankful you didn't have to serve in her - would have been tough.

We found so many items and displays of interest that time just flew by. The frigate Diamantina is the star, of course, and after five minutes on board it makes you realise how difficult life was for sailors in those days- even without the terror of having to take part in a battle at sea! Heros every one!
It would have been a bonus to have a small cafe area, rather than just vending machines, perhaps in the open space facing the river. Something for the future maybe?
We admire all the hard work the volunteers do and they should be rightly proud of the museum.

My kids loved this place. Especially the battle ship. The kids spent a lot of time exploring the depths of this old ship. lots of brilliant displays inside and out. Well put together and easy to one way course you follow (similar to ikea) to work your way through the museum. Highly recommended.

On a whim on last day , thought we would plod along, it was a Sunday and you can walk along South Bank Markets towards the Museum, which in itself is a lovely walk. Cost $16 an adult, check website for up to date ticketing info. On first entering the museum, I had my doubts, its dusty, fairly unimaginative in displays...but persist. This place is a gem! The war ship Diamartina is in Dry dock here, and you can wander around her at you leisure.....you could, quite easily spend 2-3 hrs in this place. Its interesting, scary, on occasion, and just plain fascinating. Yes , they need funds for restoration and maintenance so donate if you're able. If you have kids 5-12 ish they are going to LOVE this..small spaces, age, you get to see the engine room, officers and mates sleeping arrangements..a veritable rabbit warren. Not for the mobility challenged. But Highly recommend, good walking shoes, water a hat and maybe a snack or sandwiches, some lovely picnic tables overlooking the stunning Brisbane River. Overall, average fitness, overcome your fear of the small space..you will love it ..!

This is one Museum that is always on my to do list when in Brisbane.
Closed for repairs during the floods when we first arrived and open again before we left Brisbane, which topped our holiday off beautifully.
Staff and Personal Tour guide showed us through the Museum and added information to our tour which we would not have known if we were left to browse on our own.
This museum is in need of support to keep the history alive and if I lived in Brisbane would love to become a volunteer to keep this Museum alive.
Hope that the Forceful will be allowed back to the Museum as this is one of my favourite exhibits, which sadly had to be moved.
Thank you to the Members who care for the Museum, you have a magical piece of Brisbane History and appreciate the care and attention you give it.

Certainly a must do for those interested in maritime history. Great exhibits with many scale models of sailing vessels, the Jessica Watson solo sailing adventure, ships graveyards of coastal QLD, and more. Step outside and see a decommissioned Mk9.21 surface launched torpedo, the Dry Dock dating to 1881, the warship Diamantina and the Light Ship, CLS 2 Carpentaria. Stretching along the riverbank are more items, including a former lighthouse from Bulwer Island and various maritime equipment displays. Back inside the gift shop offers a range of nautically themed souvenirs and gifts.
We were sad to learn that the future of the museum is not guaranteed, that would be an absolute shame as the comprehensive collection merits protection and conservation.

The museum being the boat was a great way to attract the attention of the bystanders, which is how I ended up going. Because Im not into nautical things, I left the museum before having the time to inspect all the items on display.

A couple of hours well spent and my thanks to the volunteers. Sad there are plans to close it. This is one place the Qld Government should be supporting.
