Vi reiste på banen i slutten av mai følgende siste regnet. Det var grønn og helt uventet. Vi reiste fra Marree til William Creek til Oodnadatta. Vi hadde planlagt å kjøre hele banen til Marla med en liten omvei for å se på de Malte ørken og deretter går du tilbake langs sporet. De Malte Desert var fantastisk, og vi kjørte gjennom hele ørkenen til Stuart Highway i stedet. Bildene vi har sett i ørkenen det ikke rettferdighet. Den Oodnadatta spor var en fantastisk reise. Vi stoppet på alt på veien, ser på den gamle jernbanen sidings og sjekke ut Lake Eyre. Dermed turen tok tre dager. Du kan gjøre det på én dag, men du vil gå glipp av noe særlig. Sporet ble hardt med en blanding av corrugations, grus og noen jevne overflater. Det er ikke en enkel kjøretur gjort vanskeligere ved noen cowboyer kjører svært rask og spytt stener overalt. Vi gjorde det uten punkterte eller en ødelagt vinduet men vi møtte andre reisende som ikke var like heldig. Det finnes en rekke reisende på veien og alle var veldig vennlige. De store høydepunkt er den fantastiske lange rette strekker seg så langt du kan se. Det er ikke flat, men ujevnt. Kommer over de mange stiger med praktfull utsikt over diskré farger av ørkenen blandet med den myke greener av ny vekst. Rett og slett fantastisk! Vi satset på et fly over Lake Eyre ut til Dulkannina stasjon på Birdsville spore hva Sharon og Synnøve Bell holdt oss til lunsj. Sharon tok oss for en kjøretur til Cooper Creek og hadde den surrealistiske opplevelsen av å vandre langs og på Birdsville spor. Vi fløy over malt Hills, som er på Anna Creek Station. Dette er den eneste måten du kan se dem. 'Spor' er ikke en søndag drive og du må være godt forberedt med bilen. Vi hadde et godt utstyrt 4WD men det var noen folk som reiser i 2WD. Denne veien er hardt i bilen. Miljøet er tøffe og nådeløs men det var en utrolig opplevelse. Å ja ... Ta et fly net ........

Ever since I heard of this track, I felt I absolutely need to do it. Even if it's just for it's bizarre sounding name (I'm not from Australia!). It definitely requires a plan in advance - a proper 4WD with spare tyres and UHF radio, LOTS of water, sunscreme and a hat at minimum. Also keep in mind the Wifi is very limited to almost non-existent here, so book your accommodations (which are also very limited!) in advance.

But most importantly - DON'T RUSH! Not just because you are driving on a gravel road but because just driving through won't do justice to this great track. Take your time, observe the road but also everything around you, just dive in and appreciate the piece and quiet (and the flies as soon as you get out of the car, haha!).

Visit places like Mutonia Sculpture Park, Lake Eyre South, Curdimurka Railway Station, the Wabma Kadarbu Mound Springs Conservation Park, Strangways Historic Site, Peake Telegraph Station Historic Site (it can barely get more remote once you make it there!), Algebuckina rail bridge, Mt Dutton lookout and ruins, the namesake Oodnadatta itself. But I hhave no doubt you might find things I almost certainly overlooked!

All in all, if everything goes smooth (and even if it doesn't!), you won't regret you had the guts to do this trip.

Wow, a week after track reopened and it was rough going. Pretty bounxy in parts.

The track between William Creek and Marree was interesting...a few things to see along the way but the landscape changes so often it's quite beautiful. Such vibrant colours.

Saw cows and a couple of roos but not much wildlife.

Interesting road with more than you would expect along the way, from the famous Willian Ck Hotel, to ruins, art installations and various natural features. Best not driven after dark as cattle and roos rule the night. Also read the warnings as the road is sometimes closed if it rains. Old Ghan line bridges and stations dot the track.

It's like the Nullabour - you just have to do it.
I took it easy Port Augusta, Marree, Coward Springs, Oodnadatta, Coober Pedy, Woomera and Adelaide(home).
Having a CPAP I went with accomodation where I could.

Found the road a little rough in spots and it was a bit difficult when I went offroad to sites as their were no other cars. Was rare to see more than 2 vehichles between accomodation stops.
Definately air down
I RIN coopers ATT at 36 psi down to 35 and ran well. Took 2 phones do Ihad Optus and Telstra and IHF but no one to talk to due yo low traffic.
Track could do with more signs to sites as missed a couple even with the online tour guide.
Track to the mound springs is bad at a wash out and badly corrugated.
Make sure you read the road and slow at dips. If very sandy also usually very cortugated. Ood to Marla with only a couple of mills of rain left a lot of sticky spots.
Well eorth foing but eould have bern better with a second vehicle or a friend.

I’ve just completed the Oodnadatta Track in my beloved little 2WD girls car (Mazda 3). I took it slow and drove to the conditions. My speeds varied from 40 - 80 kph (maximum speed I was prepared to do). I travelled from the south-east (Marree) to the north-west (Marla) with it raining just 4 days earlier, and did no more than 210 km on gravel roads per day. There’s no doubt the first section from Marree -> William Creek was the hardest with a gibber surface making progress slow. This section also had the most to see. The second day from William Creek -> Oodnadatta was slightly better but still predominantly a gibber surface. The last day, Oodnadatta -> Marree, was the best road surface. Regardless of the section of road the conditions always deteriorated through floodways, dips and across cattle grids. I travelled the OT in mid October and only saw 2-4 other vehicles per day.
I carried three spare tyres (but didn’t need them) and a whole host of other ‘break down’ equipment. Thankfully due to luck and very cautious driving I had no problems. I loved every moment.

That's how my American wife described the Oodnadatta Track. The flies were atrociously plentiful even on a day when the wind was blowing at close to gale force. The Explorer's Way was traversed from William Creek to Marree, which was the recommended route given us by a tour bus driver! They recommended coming from north to south from the top of the Lake Eyre basin down to the more ancient top end of the northern Flinders Ranges. I'm so glad we followed that advice, too. We hired an SUV to complete the journey and certainly the higher clearance is absolutely beneficial. The area has enjoyed rain in recent months and we were fortunate to cross a creek, called Margaret Creek, on the edge of Lake Eyre south and there were hundreds of seagulls, flocked there! Made us wish we had the fish and chips to share!!!! There are interesting places to visit along the track and there was even a guy trying to ride a bicycle on the track; although the gale force winds and dust storm we experienced the day we passed through, meant that the best he could do was walk his bike. Brave guy. Definitely made us appreciate the fact that we would do the journey in one day and we had the comfort of air-conditioning and a great vehicle. Take it easy. Meet the amazing cast of characters who call that landscape home and practice gratitude and celebrate and savour every opportunity. The Oodnadatta Track is an amazing journey to undertake; whether in part or in full. Be prepared. Take your time. Help others. Enjoy

The Oodnadatta Track is going to be different for everyone at different times...we were told which parts of the track we'd expect to be rougher but we found these the best. It all depends on when its been graded and how much traffic has been on it. The roughest for us was between Marree and William Creek where we travelled about 20kms per hour in places. We lowered our tyre pressure to 26 psi and took our time and escaped any damage or punctures. We averaged about 50-60km in places and got up to about 80km in the better parts, which we found was from William Creek to Marla. The country is desolate, stony and treeless in places but is a very interesting drive. It was school holidays and there were plenty of others on the road too. Make sure you stop and enjoy the things there are to see along the way...the rail sidings, Blanche Cup and The Bubbler....the latter having a rough road into them but not as rough as the actual Oodnadatta Track in parts. We stayed at Marree, Coward Springs, William Creek, free camped at Mt Dutton ruins and Marla. Take a drive out to Halligan Bay where you will see the water at Lake Eyre.

What a wonderful experience. The country is harsh and engaging, the ruins are plentiful and the characters you meet along the way and stories they tell will last a lifetime. So happy we did this, and will do it again.

Describing this track is going to be different for each individual who experiences it. It's like nothing you will come across... if you are expecting to see homes, service stations, civilisation... then throw that concept out before you even start.

... what you will see will be vast open space... with softly changing colours and textures. It's tranquil and it's almost a surprise when another car comes into sight. My uncle and I laughed about it being like Bourke Street after three cars passed us in less than five minutes. You will be out there on your own for much of the way.

There are handy hints at the roadhouses and pubs about watching your tyre pressure when you head out on the track. They are locals for a reason... they survived this environment...so listen to them. Another handy hint is to drive to conditions. Even with the best precautions we still managed to sustain two badly puncture tyres near Mount Dare. So after changing a tyre and repairing the other one...we were on our way again, but much more wary.

You will see emus, kangaroos, eagles and ... oddly enough, seeing cows becomes a car game. There are things to see along this track... such as historical ruins, old bridges, springs ... and you will incredible sunsets. I would highly recommend that if you have a 4WD ... then you should make this track part of your personal experience.

The Oodnadatta track requires a lower tyre pressure than for asphalt. Having done so, we did not get a flat, but the number of ripped -up tires along the road is still impressive. A good example of the flat inner region of Australia and the outback.
