Beautiful period house
mai 2021 • Par
Really wonderful historic home, incredibly well preserved and full of charm and detail from the period. The volunteers were really informative and happy to answer any questions and provide more detail and stories about the house. Really lovely way to spend an hour on a weekend afternoon!

Suitable for History Buffs

This is a cute little museum just outside the C.B.D. of Adelaide, pretty easy to get to by public transport. It’s only open on weekends. We came on a quiet Sunday morning and we were virtually the only people. We paid $26 for two seniors' tickets and a short guided tour.

The house belonged to Henry Ayers, by all accounts, an influential and successful politician who was premier of South Australia multiple times between 1863 and 1873, and after whom Ayers Rock was named. The house was built by his father-in-law, later given to Henry I believe or sold to him.

Whilst the structure of the house is obviously original, most of what is inside has been reconstructed and recreated to resemble what the house would have looked like so in that sense it’s not a complete historical experience, but it does give one some idea of what home living was like in that period: Sans heating, cooling or electricity (not too comfortable, I wouldn’t have thought).

The lady who took us on the tour was knowledgeable, friendly and patient, and took the time to explain to us a bit of the history of this state and the man whose home we were touring. But all the staff are pleasant and helpful and do their best to make one’s visit an enjyable and satisfying one.

We spent about an hour here all up and enjoyed the experience, but to be honest there isn’t a huge amount to see, and I wouldn’t put it on my must see list when visiting Adelaide, unless one has a particular interest in history. (which I do!).

The downstairs toilets were locked during our visit and inaccessible, but there’s also one upstairs, which was accessible. It was clean and well provisioned. There’s no cafe, but then, you’re a few minutes walk from the centre of the C.B.D., where there are multiple eating and drinking options. At the reception are a few items for sale, although there’s no shop per se.

A step back in time
nov. 2020
I always love visiting historic houses. Ayer's House is beautifully kept and full of interesting pieces. We had the place to ourselves which was lovely, getting to explore the house quietly. There was lots of information readily available and the ladies at the desk were all very lovely and helpful. An enjoyable experience to add to a day in Adelaide.

Wonderful historic home and exceptional guide!
feb. 2020
Full disclosure - I LOVE touring historic homes! At one time North Terrace was THE place to live, and this grand old home was the residence of the five times Premier of Australia from 1855-97. A retired teacher was our exceptional guide for just the two of us on a quiet Sunday morning. The house began as a small cottage that was added onto again and again until there were 40 rooms filled with opulent furniture and state of the art conveniences. We loved every minute of the informative tour. It's always nice to see a historic home so well maintained.

Spectacular historic gem
mar. 2020
Hands down this is the best historic house I have visited to date anywhere in Australia. Ayers House is in immaculate condition and transports you right back to its 19th century heyday with beautiful, impressive period furniture and well-restored interiors. The state room on the right as you enter is spectacular and the basement level with unique underground study and open air skylight was an unexpected point of interest. The dining and sitting rooms were also lovely - I could easily have spent all day sitting around soaking up the atmosphere. I noticed throughout that there were various activities for kids in some of the rooms which were done so authentically that you almost didn't notice that they were there - it is great to see something for children that isn't tacky or patronising. The lady at the desk was very friendly and let me store my bag while I looked around. My only suggestion would be to have more information about Sir Henry Ayers and his family to provide some context/historic background as I didn't notice anything explaining who he was; maybe it would be a distraction from the house itself? Ayers House deserves to be at the very top of the must-see list for Adelaide and is well worth a visit.

My friend and I visited Ayers House. The house was beautiful, kept very well. The garden was beautiful with the roses blooming. If you are a national trust member, you can go in for free but normal $10. You could also try clothes on and take your own photos. You could make your own cards. Recommend visiting

The last grand 19th century house on North Terrace

This is a beautiful old house. Thank goodness Don Dunstan prevented its demolition. Part of the house is used for commercial purposes - weddings etc and is not open, but the rest of the house is well worth a visit

Great Historic House

We loved this tour. We paid for the guided tour which was well worth the additional 5 dollars. Barbara showed us the top 2 floors and Grant the basement. Both were friendly and knowledgeable. We learned a lot about Mr. Ayers, Adelaide and the house. You can take all the photos you want and even use flash.

Nat Trust Property very special.

Sir Henry Ayres House is wonderfully preserved. It feels as if he just left. The house is in the central business district (on the edge really) so easy to get to. It is a terrific remnant of Adelaide's history and is very touchy-feely as they are very liberal with access to all areas.

Travelling back in time

I love visiting old houses and learning about how people lived in the past. The entry fee is only $10 and for an extra $5 a volunteer guide will bring the house to life with information and anecdotes.
