Loved this arcade. Quirky shops including a hat shop, a button shop (buttons as far as the eye can see), an arcade museum, jewellery shops, Haighs chocolates, aboriginal shop, souvenir shop. Walked through here multiple times during our 2 week stay.

Prachtige 19e eeuwse winkel galerij. Die nog helemaal de authentieke sfeer uit die periode weergeeft. De moeite waard om eens door heen te lopen. En vergeet ook niet om naar boven te kijken

This is listed as 112-118 Grenfell Street but also listed as 121 Rundle Mall, so it runs from Grenfell Street to Rundle Mall. It was opened in 1885 and was the most modern shopping precinct at the time.
The Arcade’s most prominent features are the domes at each entrance. These domes are decorated with an unusual version of the Australian Coat of Arms. It is a very beautiful building

Do yourself a favour- grab a self guided tour brochure and read up on the history of this arcade. I had t0 go back afterwards to see all the things I'd missed... some of the original poles are displayed in the centre of arcade, the glass window showing the stairwell down to the tearooms, the coat of arms, fountain and general history.
I initially walked through and thought it was quaint with lots of people and some interesting shops, then I turned into Gays arcade and found the 'museum' stairwell where I grabbed a brochure and spent some time reading and learning about the arcade which opened in 1895. Apparently there's a resident ghost too!!
It was so much better the second visit knowing the history of it...

Historically significant , this beautiful old arcade dates back to 1885 and one of the first in Adelaide to have electric lights. The old Carrara Marble floors are still there and it has retained some of its early beauty but it is historically significant but not that great for shopping. Fortunately it is still there as a reminder of the past.

The outside is lovely but the inside is stunning. We were there around 5pm and a lot of the stores were closing but there were enough still open to make it worthwhile. We walked the loop of the ground floor then came across the free museum which is located between the 2 floors and takes you to the 2nd floor. Well worth looking at the exhibits. On the top floor we found a manufacturing jeweller and then a bootmaker who had a huge selection of coloured shoe creams. I had been searching for a particular colour and he had it.
It's great to see skilled tradesmen and women still in business.

My wife and I find ourselves in the city. There was some thought about visiting the Art Gallery, but the Arcade won out! First an excellent coffee and cake at the Coffee Spot, and then a browse up and down the Arcade. We enjoyed chatting to the managers of the Games Shop with its vast range of games, puzzles and jigsaws. We then resisted the urge to visit Haigh’s Chocolates, having over-indulged at Christmas. The Button Shop is an amazing experience, and there is a very interesting Arts Gallery around in Gay’s Arcade. It is worth stopping to view the (covered) steps down to the old tearooms beneath the main arcade, and then a stop at the Card Shop with its helpful owner and extensive range of gift cards. We found this a wonderful way to spend an hour in the city!

This old arcade is a historical site. The oldest shopping arcade of Australia is beautiful. There are many nice little shops, coffee shops and restaurants. It's worth to walk through and look out for something special in the small shops. The decoration at Christmas time is amazing.

Step back in history with this incredible arcade first opened in 1885. Lovely Art Deco architecture still intact.
Packed full of internet shops, cafes and boutiques. Visit the small but interesting museum on the first floor.
Great photos to be had on ground and upper floor.
Don’t miss the glass window on the floor that leads down to a basement!

It is extremely easy to locate the Arcade and based on where you are staying it may make sense to take the free tram to get there. The Arcade is a good-sized shopping complex that is located in a very beautiful historical building. They have a number of well-known shops as well as some unique stores with items made in Australia. Pick up a brochure when you enter that provides you with a historical tour of the building. The Museum that is located on the upper floor contains a great deal of memorabilia and definitely should not be missed.
