What a beautiful walking track following the old tram rail track. The falls, along with the information signs and the rebuilt swing bridge, made for a pleasant day's walk. A total of 11.2 klms out and back but very doable for the average person. We broke it up having our lunch at the falls. Lot's of fungi and interesting flora along the way!

Impressive falls that you discover by crossing a suspension bridge.
Two hours of walking to get there, but an easy walk.
Definitely worth the detour.

Montezuma falls is approximately 10 km walking on a disused train track within a temperate rainforest. The walk is predominantly flat and it is impossible to get lost. There are a few seats along the way and there is a small platform area at the base of the Falls where you can stop take a photo or have a bite to eat. There is also a suspension bridge you can cross to view the Falls. It is not necessary to cross the bridge to enjoy the Falls or the track

A long way. Easy walk though. Worth the effort. Falls lovely. Lunch on the rocks in front of falls. Bridge not for the faint hearted

we walked to the Falls in intermittent cold rain but loved it. So much natural beauty at all scales from tiny flowers to huge tree ferns, all sorts of fungi, and the lovely waterfall with a great view from the suspension bridge. The walk did take three hours - remember to take some food and water- and we were tired.

Access to the falls for walkers is via a 6klm track off the main A10 Murchison Highway on the western side of Rosebery, it is signposted not with the standard brown/white tourist info type of road sign but but one of the blue painted parks department style signage.

Most of the 6klm in road is sealed, the final klm or so is more gravelly and broken up with potholes. Road does narrow and bend in places so reduce speed accordingly and be prepared for other vehicles.

On arrival there is a large open parking area, grassy area adjacent with picnic bench.
Free entry & free parking

One toilet at the start of the walking track, unisex composting/non flush toilet and yes there was toilet paper!! Only toilet on site.

Overall the walk will take about 3 hours at a steady pace allowing for photo stops along the way, it's the same way in and out it's not a loop, it's about 10klm overall.

Plenty of lush green foliage, fungi, lichen the sight and sounds of running water along the way with of course the main show at the end the mighty Montezuma's Falls. Big high and loud fall, not that wide but a great sight.

Great viewing area near the foot of the falls for photos looking from the bottom to the top of the falls. Plus one of those narrow one person wide suspension bridges that you can also view the falls from whilst suspended over the river/valley below, it's bouncy with a 4 person max at one time.

Plenty of info signs along the way about nature and old industry in the area, give yourself time and enjoy the trip.

If you're a hardcore hiker this is no challenge for you it'll just be a scenic walk, if you are an occasional walker you'll love it and if you are concerned you're not fit enough for the walk give it a go. It's not a steep up and down walk the track gently undulates at worst. There are also about 4 benches along the way if you want to stop and sit for a while.

Although not a tough walk I would not consider the terrain suitable for someone in a wheelchair or who needs to use a walking frame, walking stick(s) user maybe OK but depends on your confidence and you need to allow for movement of ground under your stick.

NOTE: Whatever time of year you visit, dress for wet conditions. West Coast Tas gets a lot of rain all year round in winter when I visited a week after prolonged rain the track had many large puddles, water running onto the pathway and muddy spots. In summer it may be drier but it's still a shady damp rain forest environment. So wear boots or sturdy walking shoes/sneakers that you don't mind getting dirty.

There's no public drinking water supply so bring your own drink and a snack.

The falls track is now one of the many mountain bike tracks available on the west coast and is sign posted as a shared track for walkers and cyclists. No bikes around during my visit but it was low season.

Enjoy...it's so very green and lush

A beautiful walk along an old tram track. The track was wet and muddy so be prepared. The best part is the suspension bridge at the falls. Took us just over an hour of walking one way.

Tbh. I didn't think I could do this walk been a very long walk. And not fit. But had no issues. Yes it's long but it's flat and there are things to distract you from walk. Old tracks, old bridges, minor falls, river. A tunnel. A suspension bridge. (I didn't do, but don't need to cross to veiw the Fall.) there had just been floods so Montezuma was booming stunning. Don't let the length of this deter you. It's well worth it

We travelled via tar and unsealed roads to the ‘largest falls’ in Tasmania to be advised it is a further 5 km walk to view them. Of no value to be advised on a sign upon arrival that the walk is required. Waste of time to travel here if you have children or elderly guests! Don’t bother going if you don’t want to walk or feel unsafe leaving your car in a deserted remote car park!

The track winds it way through the forest beside the Ring River along an old tramway trail built to service a disused silver mine. It is a 10km return hike but not too strenuous - gentle inclines and declines only. It took us around 3.5 hours to complete the return journey back to the carpark - including plenty of photo stops and a rest at the Falls.

There are plenty of interesting sites along the way including an old tramway bridge across the river slowly being reclaimed by the rainforest, aged sleepers on the trail with railway spikes still embedded and an old mine shaft. The pay off at the end was the Falls of course and a 100m long suspension bridge. One of our favourite hikes in Tasmania.

Take care - we saw a couple of Tiger Snakes adjacent to the trail.
