A very important place to visit when learning about the history of white Australia. Super emotional. You need a few hours to really read and experience everything.

We did the guided tour and so glad we did as our guide (Marcel) was fabulous and so informative. I do recommend that you do this tour before Port Arthur as Port Arthur is on a much bigger scale with alot of ruins and buildings intact. You'll be disappointed if you expect the female factory will be the same. You have to use more of your imagination with the female factory while listening to the stories of their harrendous stories . I found this more interesting, maybe cause I grew up aware of Port Arthur but had never heard of this female "factory". If you are doing the Cascade Brewery, PLEASE also do this tour, it's enlightening.

I’ll preempt this review with my total acknowledgment that convict life was harsh and largely targeted the poor.
.
This place presented that with an awkward left of field feminist view. Odd that the male tour guide carried the skewed viewpoint that women in our modern time face the same oppression than those of convict days. One comment disturbed me “women in these (convict) days, like today were intelligent (totally correct) and used the system to their advantage”. Not so sure this is applicable now.
.
The Strumpets tour was the droning narrative of a man throwing his opinions in for almost an hour standing in large open spaces in the sun.
.
Concept was good. Poorly executed.

Sorry to say but this place failed in many ways. We went to the female factory in Ross, Port Arthur and Sarah Island in Strahan. At those places we were just given the facts of what life was like there, not a forced opinion that came across as a feminist point of view. At Ross it was also free but still we got a lot of information there. Here at the Cascades Female Factory you walk into 3 large virtually empty spaces and have to either go on a tour that you have to pay more money or have to do an audio tour that chews up battery life on your phone as well as listen again to a very feminist point of view. When we go to historical places, we like to read at our own pace, just get the simple facts and make our own opinion on how things were. And to pay $25 each was ridiculous. There was a small building with some information signage but the rest was large empty spaces with modern sculptures. Ripoff and from reading reviews of the place prior to it being turned into a feminist ranting place, this used to be a decent place to lear and visit.

I do not know what to say. We did a 1 hour guided tour - Mark was our guide and we had a group of around 20 people. The tour and his commentary was exceedingly moving. How they have marked on the ground with pavers and gravel the rooms etc. is haunting.
Incredibly moving is the wall with the names of mothers who gave birth, names and ages of the children many of whom died very young.
I can't say more than this was incredibly moving and well worth it.

This is a 4* location with a 5* experience. There is not a lot physically left of the factory which is a bit disappointing but the work that has been down to create an experience that tells the story is amazing. I listened to the audio guide all the way through … twice! The whole site highlights the lesser known history of women (including some acknowledgement of indigenous women) and is a real feminist celebration. Awesome staff and a pretty cool gift shop

Sad place with dark history and stories of convict women. That was reception for convict women from 1828. and you can use imagination to have some ideas what was going on at that place. At the same time there was also 2,000 kids.

The place is tourist attraction but also very educational place for everyone. It's good to know some history facts from that past and how life was hard at that time, especially for women.

The history of how women were treated, criminalised and abused is horrific. The incompetence of how it was done in Hobart is horrendous. It is also something everyone should know.
We paid for a guided tour, it was well worth the extra. Our guide was knowledgeable, passionate and interesting. He was able to bring the tragic events to life.
If you can get through a tour of Cascades without shedding a tear you are cold indeed. I just wanted to fight the patriarchal system that allowed it to happen.

We arrived at opening time and decided to do the guided tour with Miranda. She had so much passion and understanding of the history of the factory it certainly made our visit more memorable and gave us a greater understanding of what went on during the time the jail was operational. The stories and history of this place is heartbreaking. I’m glad we did the guided tour rather then the self guided tour
