Australia is known for its birdlife. Seeing and feeding the birds at Kennet River was an experience that we had been looking forward to. However, the timing of our visit was most unfortunate as Forest Fire Management Victoria was doing planned burns of undergrowth at Kennet River! There were no birds, only a great deal of smoke haze! The staff on duty in the car park were very helpful in providing information and reassuring us about the planned burn. We were allowed to walk a short distance along the road between the cafe and the caravan park, and were lucky to spot 3 koalas. As we were leaving, 2 cockatoos raided a rubbish bin!

This is a review of the beach walk from the car park just before Kennet River.
Absolutely beautiful and relaxing walk. We spent 2 hours walking the dog along the beach and rocks and didn’t meet another soul. Fabulous volcanic rock formations and pools.
Just be careful as many of the rocks were incredibly slippery - I think we entertained several drivers on the Great Ocean Road with our flailing and attempts to stay upright.
Certainly worth stopping for a peaceful wander.

We were driving along the Great Ocean Road in our hired motorhome and because I'd read about this area, decided to stop off and explore, we nearly never and now I'm so glad we did. As others have mentioned there's lots of birds at the start of the road (which is very steep) so stop for a while to see these, then start the climb up the road, keeping your eyes peeled for koalas up high in the trees. There's quite a few tourists around so ask if they've seen any and they'll point out the trees the lil fellas are perching in (do the same for others). We saw about 8 or 9 koalas, some feeding, most sleeping. All in all a great 40 minutes stop and FREE.

When you arrrive, you will see dozens of tourists clustered around a couple of small trees and you will think you've scored the famous koala. Most of them are feeding parrots but there might be one in the tree. To score a great koala view, drive up the hill on the dirt road past the tourists a couple of kilometers and watch the tree tops. We saw 10 within 5 minutes!!

OK so when you first drive up to the car park down by the cafe, don't get too excited thinking there are koalas right there by the main road. Yes, a lot of people are gathered, but they are actually feeding the birds not koalas (I wouldn't try to feed a koala and neither should you). The tiny tiny town is known for its Koala Walk, which is absolutely fantabulous. I must say I was also pretty jealous of the campers (man they hard core camped with camping equipment I didnt even know existed). There was the beach, the campsite, and of course, the koalas! No wonder so many people love it here. Nestled into the GOR, you've got towns a few miles away but also amazing scenery and national parks all around you. It'll be highly unlikely to run out of things to do here!
the Koalas: We saw 4!! You do have to look high up in the trees, but that's also the cool part: you just have to watch them live their lives. This is them, in their natural habitat, putting up with us cooing tourists :)

Firstly I have to admit I am biased as I have been holidaying in and off in Kennet River all my life (68 years) It has a wonderful surf beach renowned among good surfers, yet safe for young boogie boarders, and a River mouth for tiny tots. It has a basic camping ground across the highway and one main store. Koalas frequent the camping park. Excursions into the Otways behind are very rewarding with beautiful picnic grounds at Grey River and a fern walk. If you want serenity, unspoiled scenery and completely forested hillsides this is the place to stay.

This was one of the highlights of our Australia holiday where we got to feed wild lorikeets and Sulphur-crested cockatoos from our hands. Use Google Maps to find this small town that is about 30min drive from Lorne; if you’re travelling from Lorne to Apollo Bay, you won’t miss this little town. We were a bit worried that we would have to drive around to find the exact location where you can feed the birds but there is always a small crowd feeding them near a café-cum-milk bar so you won’t miss it. The bird feed is $1-2 per packet and we bought two for our daughters.
Tip: please wear long sleeved jackets so that the sharp claws of the cockatoo doesn’t scratch your forearms – I learnt this the hard way and still have some small scars to show for it!
Get ready also for the lorikeets to land on your head – they don’t mean any harm and are very cute. A definitely enjoyable stop on our way along the Great Ocean Road!
