Any visit to the wonderful city, is not complete without exploring the laneways, we cheated as we had a map of all the best ones to see, however, with time on your side you could just wing it, seeing these quirky passages.

One of Melbourne's best-kept secrets is the rich variety of its laneways. The food streets, like Degraves St and Hardware Lane, offer a variety of cuisines, but you can find good food almost anywhere. Some personal favorites are Royal Arcade, with the ancient Gog and Magog replicas. One sight not to miss is the Block Arcade, which is a house of treasures.

One of the jewels of Melbourne. We stayed on Flinders Street in the Double Tree Hilton and a few steps to the side you're on Degraves Street which is quite pretty lit up at night, but from here the Laneways radiate out in different directions around the city centre.
We didn't fully realise that while you're wandering in a variety of directions along graffitied brick and concrete alleyways (sometimes connected through a modern shopping mall), you'll suddenly walk into an old Victorian Arcade. It's like suddenly being transport to Leeds, London or York. These are all part of the Laneways and create a real juxtaposition of old and new. It's brilliant.
We spent six days in Melbourne and walked miles in the Laneways, stopping for food or to reach a restaurant. Streets like Hosier Lane (brilliant Tapas restaurant here) , Flinders Lane, Higson Lane (at night with its light show) and Guildford Lane which is quite beautifully graffiti, brick and green! But there are plenty of others to explore.

Lots of cool street art to look at. Visited Hosier and Flinders. It's so good that we tourists stop and the locals are carrying out photoshoot. Even the bins are sprayed with art.

Melbourne's laneways are a city within a city. The laneways hold many secrets, from AC/DC Lane to the French dessert specialist Roule Gallett, one of the city's favourite pancake cafes. Melbourne is well-known for wall art, in particular Hosier Lane, but it is not alone. Melbourne's laneways are always changing, what is here today may not be there tomorrow. Melbourne's laneways are indeed a secret city.

We loved walking around the laneways of Melbourne. They are full of life! There are cafes and restaurants and people and some surprises, like street art, for which many of these laneways are best known. We visited several of these, like Hosier Lane, Degraves street, Union Lane, Centre Place, Flinders Court and many others. Unfortunately much of the street art has been vandalized but you can still visit and take a look. If you prefer an authentic cup of coffee or a lovely meal, then head to one of these laneways, such Degraves street. You will love it.

There are a number of well known laneways in the Melbourne CBD. Some are better than others. The better ones are those that have a number of positive reviews. These would be AC/DC Lane, Hosier Lane, Union Lane. There are some, though, that are not with the visit. Amphlett Lane is named after a famous Australian musician, however, the lane has only been named after her. There is nothing more to it.

Save your money and pick up a free map from one of the tourist information offices and self guide yourself round the laneway. Sadly some of the lovely mural have been spoilt by malicious graffiti. Saying that there is still plenty of beautiful art to see.

People rave about these. Frankly I was disappointed. We did the tour by ourselves. There's certainly no need to pay a guide because its easy to find your way around. In Hosier Street, it is graffiti not street art, but it is colourful. There is plenty of it and tourists like it. In AC/DC street (yes it is called that) the artwork is better but there is a lot less of it. There’s a rather ordinary Hendrix, Pete Townsend smashing his guitar on stage against a Led Zep background and a couple of other bits of rock symbolism. The best depiction is that of Bon Scott the first front man of AC/DC and the Jimmy Young picture is good too. That’s about it. Other lanes like Degraves are all about the food and the coffee, which is interesting enough, but frankly I expected more art. No way does this compete with or even come close to the range and quality of that seen in Santa Monica and settlements south of there, but no Aussie will ever tell you that.

The Laneways of Melbourne are an enlightening experience. You see life as it was meant to be! From graffiti to similar "but different" street art, to cafes and restaurants to fashion outlets and much more. They are not really that hard to find as long as you keep walking. That's what we did!
