We caught the tram from the City and enjoyed a leisurely walk along the seafront from Port Melbourne to St Kilda, a lovely way to send a couple of hours in the sunshine

Port Melbourne Beach is on the periphery of Port Phillip Bay. The beach is note as well-known as other Bay beaches, it is often used by local residents. Port Melbourne Beach is in the shadow of the city. The beach is easy to get to; it's a tad small for most visitors likin,g though it's a favorite beach for sail-boarding.

Port Melbourne the place to go to die and then walk your chihuahua in front of traffic that have the green light. Where to go for locals to intimidate you because you might be driving too slow. Don’t get me started on the food establishments … ok, I’m started. If you like over priced meals and to be spoken down to then this is the place for you otherwise avoid like the plague and head to St Kilda.

I have lived in Port Melbourne for the last 12 months and will soon be moving away to find better water. The beach is regularly polluted by yara river water runoff and is subject to a lot of trash washing up in brown foamy water. I think the pollution attracts jellyfish as there are often large swarms to be seen, and impossible to avoid when in the water. On hot days it is also very crowded with jetskis driving at dangerous speeds, so not safe for swimmers or families. All other reviews focus on beach walking and cafes, but fail to mention the poor swiming conditions noted above... you'll note this for yourself when at the beach there will be hardly anyone in the water, especially not locals. Only fooolish tourists who will end up with gastro or jellyfish stings will go for a swim. Best also to wear shoes as the sand is full of broken glass and occasional needles washed up from city drug users. I would recommend any other beach that is located further from the yara river pollution and city influences. I would also note that due to the large number of dogs on the beach, there is usually dog droppings and pee all around, and little sign of native bird life. This is truely an urban beach for those with no eye for detail.

Port Melbourne Beach is only 3 km (2 miles) south-west from the Melbourne CBD. You can see the Port of Melbourne and the West Gate Bridge from the shore. Port Melbourne Beach is popular with locals and visitors alike. The Sandridge Dog Beach is an off-leash dog beach. There are also BBQ facilities and playgrounds. Just remember to pop on a leash on your pooch if you are near the playground, or any other place with children

We have some friends who live opposite Station Pier. When we visit, we take a walk along the beach. It is clean and we have noticed that in recent years the beach is being revegetated. Princes Pier is interesting, but it lacks the iconic status of Station Pier, where many European migrants took their first steps in Australia. Port Melbourne Beach is one of the more welcoming Bay beaches. At certain times of the year it is an off-leash dog beach. By the way, you can always pick up a cup of coffee along the way

Lovely quiet beach that is generally clean, safe & picturesque. Great place to go for a walk and with Bay St nearby you have plenty of pubs & restaurants if you want a bite to eat. Princes Pier is also a great iconic place to take some great photos, sit & relax. A much better option than the crowded and overrated St.Kilda beach.

I like how some of the vast expanses of sandy beaches on this side of Port Philip Bay are being stabilised with vegetation. I see native birds moving in and grasslands establishing on the shores. I have also noticed how there are so many memorials to soldiers and events along this stretch of coastline as well.

The beach near Princes Pier is a gem. Quite quiet with a nice backdrop. The pier itself has a lot of history and is well worth exploring.

Port Melbourne Beach is a safe and clean beach, popular with locals and tourists alike. It is sandwiched between New Beach and South Melbourne Beach. The Port Of Melbourne can be seen from here as well as the West Gate Bridge. Station and Princes Piers are within walking distance, and the Spirit of Tasmania docks in this area too.
Parking is found along the foreshore and nearby streets - be advised check for permit zones [can't park there] and car park pay stations [may need an app, credit card or coins]. There is a tram stop in the vicinity of this area - Number one.
It is the perfect place for beach tennis, exercise, photography and swimming. It is family-friendly, and parts of the beach allow dogs off the leash certain time of the year, so be sure to check 'Maps Melbourne' or signage as you enter.
There are plenty of benches to sit on, small rotundas to shelter under or watch the ferry come in/leave plus small cafes scattered along the foreshore.
Recommended items to bring if swimming - towel, hat, flip flops, insect repellent and sunscreen.
