Return to the days of high drama and spectacle

The Regent Theatre is in the center of the Melbourne. It's been renovated, so it's returned to the glory days of the between the wars period. The Regent often stages spectacular shows, such as Moulin Rouge. One of the better points about the Regent is that it is very easy to get to, in Collins St, near the corner of SWanston St.

Stunning theatre!

Saw Moulin Rouge here and was so impressed with the venue and staff. Despite the huge number of patrons the seating was quick and friendly.

Saw & Juliet at the Reagant and it was truly amazing. The Lower level seating is not as steep as you would want, but you should be able to see the stage. A great place for shoes. The price of drinks is a touch steep.

Theatre is an eye-catching entertainment venue

The Regent Theatre dates from 1929, when it was a grand picture palace. After a period of disuse, the Regent reopened in 1996 as a spectacular venue for live entertainment. Now, the Regent is at the heart of the East End Theatre District. The Regent is certainly one of Melbourne's most eye-catching live theatre venues. Moulin Rouge! The Musical starts with a long run in the magnificent tradition of musical theatre.

One of the best shows we have seen for sure - excellent music and story

Beautiful theatre

We enjoyed a wonderful evening at this theatre. The architecture inside is beautiful and we saw & Juliet, which is one of the best shows we have seen over more than 40 years of theatregoing. The show would have been great in a tent, but this beautiful theatre made the evening memorable and special.

Vintage interior is truly glorious

This theatre was built in an age when no expense was spared in construction and decoration. The Regent is one of Melbourne's most popular theatres, and it has remained in almost constant use since it was built. The glorious interior, with its vintage decorations and gold leaf, is an attraction in itself. Any theatre, however, is only as good as the shows the producers choose to put on the stage.

Joseph and the Amazing Flop

I went to this wonderful theatre to see Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat The performance was a huge disappointment. While the Narrator played a good role and has a great voice, the casting of children in adult roles left me choking. There was a 9 year old Asian girl playing an adult Jewish man. I mean come on, as a previous reviewer asked (and the guy seated behind me!), "was there not enough money for an adult cast?" The narrator which is a pivotal role played other roles which just didn't succeed and took away from the production. It is insanity how bad this version of Joseph is, the benchmark being the version that played in Melbourne 2-3 decades ago and which lives on in my memory for its greatness. Shane Crawford is definitely not the worst person cast in this show and as a Melbournian, he worked. I was planning to see Joseph a few times over summer as I love the music, thank God I didn't buy a second ticket yet. Kudos to the lead actor and to Paulini but forget the rest. For kids and philistines only.

Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat

I went to see Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat at the Regent Theatre.

I found the spaces around the bar areas to be quite limited and there was no real space to spread while waiting for the doors to open. Unless you wanted to wait outside, where it was hit/miss with the rain.
The seating itself is comfortable and there’s decent space to move down aisles.
Food and drink aren’t cheap, as a small bottle of Coke set me back $5.50.

The theatre itself is beautiful. Very old and elegant, with its gold detailing and beautiful draping.

Production itself was mostly great. I’m all for a surprise celeb appearance for a laugh, but get someone who can sing. Sorry Shane, theatre isn’t for you. Paulini was amazing as the narrator.

Joseph and the Amazing Paulini

I have seen this show five times, ranging from school productions to West End. Did they not have enough money for a full cast? The narrator was also Jacob, Mrs Potiphar, a Guard, and was jigging about and popping up at random moments throwing bad fake accents around for no discernible reason. All the music had been slowed down? Random vocal theatrics that added nothing to the show. The casting of a child as Potiphar…..with an over sexed wife? Yuck! Half the brothers were children, and they did a very good job, the grown brothers and female dancers were great. Shane Crawford looked scared out of his mind and had all the pizzazz of wet tofu. Where were the sets? Paid to see Joseph, got the Paulini show with some kids and a couple of good dance numbers. Really poor effort. If it ain’t broke don’t fix it comes to mind.
