Vline services between Southern cross and Ballarat/Woundaree always get late mostly due to humanly reasons i.e. conductors are not in position, drivers are late and followed by technical issues.
Services need to be improved a lot.

Headed to Albury on Xmas day to stay in town for a few days. First time ever on a regional train service in Victoria. With free train travel on Xmas day it cost us zero, and only $10 each for the return fare. Service departed promptly at 0707hrs and arrived on time at 1045 in Albury. Fell asleep easily during the quiet journey, and watched the passing scenery when awake. Buffet service was open for snacks if needed. Seen some poor reviews, but our experience was excellent. Just need to remove the made in Victoria promotion from the windows so you can see the great countryside while travelling.

The Vline Velocity service runs to Albury and for us as Seniors, it provided an attractive option. No driving, sitting back and relaxing for 4 ish hours and at the cost of $3.50 each - not to be sneezed at.
The train left on time and was quite full. A 6 carriage train ( 2 x 3 carriage sets)
The trip passed nicely apart from a rather 'vocal' passenger who was eventually quietened down by a Vline conductor.
I had planned to get a snack on the rain cafe but it wasn't open - despite the ticket saying it would be. After Euroa, the conductor quietly told me that the cafe in the back 3 carriage set actually was open (I was in the front 3 carriage set). The proposal was that when we stopped, I should leave my carriage and get on to the back 3, order what I wanted, and then at the next stop, return to my seat. This was not a popular option with my wife ....nor me ..... so I passed.
Other than that, it was a pleasant 4 hours trip.

We enjoyed our journey to Waurn ponds in the V-line train service. It was very convenient as there were hourly departures from Southern Cross station and similarly from Waurn Ponds for the return. This gave lot of flexibility for us to plan our travel times avoiding the rush. The service was smooth and efficient and the carriages were looking clean. There was good leg space between rows of seats for comfortable travel and overhead rack to hold our cabin bags. The railway compartment was well equipped with a spacious toilet.

The maximum fares for Victorian public transport make a casual daytrip to the countryside very affordable. It was just a one hour journey to beautiful Ballan. This is a walkable town of small size with a number of cafes and restaurants. I also did some food shopping while I was here.

I use the Warrnambool line. Great when it runs, but more often than not there are cancellations or coach replacements. A very unreliable service.

I arrived at the station early to avoid delays. I was told by an attendant to come to the pick-up point, and although I was a little surprised at the early departure, I made my way to the bus. After a bit of communication, I realized that this wasn't the bus I was going to get on, but the attendant then "reminded" me, in a very very very passive-aggressive tone of voice, that "the bus to xxx is at xx:xx, OkAy?!" The last "OkAy?!" is particularly offensive in a disgusted, impatient and whiny way, as if I've made the worst mistake simply by arriving early. Even if I was misremembering the time, I didn't give her a lot of trouble (she just asked me to come to the bus and it didn't delay the bus because someone came after me and boarded), and the experience was so depressing and unpleasant that I would have liked a reasonable retraction of such remarks and an apology

This is a public service on a tight schedule, so (a) the time you get at the key spots is REALLY short, you may need to run around a bit to make it (b) if you’re not back on time, it WILL leave (c) if there’s a delay en route (e.g. traffic), it will simply cut stop time to make up for it (e.g. ours skipped the stop at the Bay Of Islands to recover 15min). That said, it is much cheaper than commercial tours, so depends what your priorities are.

V Line is the Victorian government's regional train service. It runs from Melbourne to destinations such as Bendigo and Ballarat. The trains are punctual. Fares are capped, all you need is a Myki card. The trains are comfortable and punctual. Fares are not expensive.

What would be the best and cheapest ticket price for a concession Bendigo to Adelaide return would be please and thank you
Skrevet 7. mai 2024
Where is the ticket office at the Southern Cross station also what is the platform number for the Bendigo line as I want to go to Castlemaine
Skrevet 4. november 2021
Platform numbers constantly change. You need to view the board at Southern Cross or check on the PTV website. You can buy tickets from the machines but best to use a Myki Card and top it up.

I have a pensioner concession card, how much would it cost me for a return trip to Bendigo and what platform does the Bendigo train leave from Southern Cross station?
Skrevet 21. november 2019
Eligibility for concessional fares is subject to having: "a Pensioner Concession Card issued by Centrelink or the Department of Veterans Affairs. You can use a Pensioner Concession Card from any Australian state or territory". You will need to buy a paper ticket or else get a concessional Myki card. .A concession fare is half the full-fare. You get additional discounts if you travel outside the peak. A return for a concession holder is $33.40, but just $23.38 if off-peak. If you were a Victorian resident concession card holder you would get two free return vouchers a year and you could use one of them for the trip. "Peak services are all services where you touch off in Zone 1 before 9am weekdays or where you touch on in Zone 1 between 4pm and 6pm weekdays." Also, "All other services including public holidays and weekends are defined as off-peak." This also covers travelling on non-myki weekend services". Have fun in Bendigo.

I am planning to travel(14 jan, monday) from Southern cross to Geelong on vline using myki and then catch the coach to Apollo bay. Thereafter I plan to take the GOR sightseeing coach from vline. But I cant seem to find any link to book that part of the journey online. Later in the day, I have a ticker from Warrnambool to Melbourne. Can anyone suggest if the V/Line Great Ocean Road air-conditioned sightseeing coach is still running and if yes, how do i book it in advance. Thanks in advance.

I can thoroughly recommend Ballarat... We went in January staying at the Lake Inn... Lovely walks around Lake Wendouree and a great day out visiting The Sovereign Hill and Gold Museums...
Skrevet 25. februar 2018
There is a regular direct service between Melbourne and Ballarat... takes approx 90 minutes. Check the VLINE website for timetables and fares.

hello there,
We would like to go for the GOR and then to soveriegn hill, Philip island, mornington peninsular and bellarine peninsula (queenscliff, sorento),
May we get some directions and also how to go there using the V/line services and should we take the myki pass or ticket? (how much do we need to pay /person(adult) and can it be used for the entire journey (require topping the money?)
Skrevet 3. februar 2016
Peter has answered it fairly well but Philip island you can get to by V Line bus but have to stay overnight as can't come back the same day. Anyway you would need to stay the night as the penguins do not come out until late. Sovereign Hill in the best to get to as train to Ballarat and they have a bus from the station. Ring up the PTV and they will tell the details. It is a free 1800 number.
