The South African War, also known as the Boer War, was fought between the Boers (Dutch for farmers) and the forces of the British Empire. The war was fought between 1899-1902. The South African War was the first war Australia fought as a nation. The Australians were good bushmen and expert horsemen, making the valuable soldiers. Although the British forces technically won the war, it really solved nothing. The South African War Memorial commemorates those who served and those who never returned.

This large memorial is dedicated to those Western Australians that died or were killed in the Boer War (1899-1902) and was unveiled in Kings Park in 1902.
The memorial is a four sided sandstone plinth with two soldiers cast in bronze on top. One soldier is carrying a rifle and appears to be standing over and protecting a fellow wounded soldier who is lying on the ground drinking water from a flask, There are bronze plaques on each side of the plinth.
There is a captured Krupp field gun that was donated to the State in front of the Memorial.

This was the first War Memorial erected in Kings Park and dates to 1901.
It commemorates WA soldiers killed in the South African (Boer) War between 1899/ 1902. The foundation stone was laid by the Duke of Cornwall and York who had visited Australia to open the Commonwealth Parliament. The original statue of a solder was replaced by the current replica in 1915. The Krupp gun was presented to WA in 1906 by the British Government. Various plaques and inscriptions adorn the monument.

Just as you turn into Fraser Ave the South African War Memorial is on the left hand side. The Memorial is well kept and worth a look if passing.
Just next to the Memorial there is a huge and very impressive tree.

Honoring a British war of aggression against the Boers (Dutch settlers) in South Africa. This war (1899 - 1901) was widely condemned as an unjust war against (non-British) European settler republics (Transvaal and Oranje Vrijstaat) previously officially recognized by the imperial government. The reason this war was declared was most probably the discovery of gold in Witwatersrand (Transvaal).
The British government amassed a number of 450,00 to 500,000 troops against the Boers outnumbering them 5 times. Eventually they won their war, but it was a Pyrrus victory, as the Boers succeeded in inflicting heavy losses to the British military. In retaliation they applied a scorched earth tactic and interned the Boers families and workers in concentration camps in which more than 48,000 people died of starvation and ill-treatment.
One would have guessed Western Australians who earlier founded the Swan colony would identify with the fate of the Boers who settled in South Africa almost 200 years earlier (1652), but they did not. Instead many were part of the British imperial intervention. Not a history to be proud of.
Perhaps it is a good idea to replace the statue with one of Emily Hobhouse (1860-1926), the English journalist who campaigned against the British concentration camps and succeeded in changing the military supervision to civil authorities thus saving thousands of lives.

The Australians came to South Africa to calm the war. Many Australians were killed. The Boers were angry. The war lasted from 1899 till 1902.
Krupp field gun was taken at Bothaville.
The main monument depicts of an Australian soldier with a gun in his hands. Nearby another soldier drinks water. It was hot in South Africa!
Underneath the statues, there were scenes of battles that happened in Africa.
I was well put together and attractive as well.
It was surrounded by tropical trees and plants.
This was the first war monument in Perth.
I was impressed.
