Well worth a visit while in Perth, Western Australia is the historic Anglican St George’s Cathedral located in the central business district at Cathedral Square, 38 George Street. Even better, if you get the opportunity. is to attend a Church Service there.
My wife and I were afforded such an opportunity during the National Conference of The Order of Australia Association held in Perth during May 2024, which we attended. To conclude the Conference, the local Branch arranged for a special Choral Evensong Service there on a Sunday evening, where Conference delegates attended and where recognition of The Order of Australia (our unique Australian honours system) and its award recipients was an integral part of the order of service.
It was a pleasing Service with hymn singing to the accompaniment of the West organ and a choir and included a meaningful message devoted to service to others delivered by The Most Reverend Dr Peter Carnley AC, Archbishop of Perth (from 1981 to 2005). Given that the Service was honouring recipients in The Order of Australia it also incorporated a dynamic organ version of the Australian National Anthem in its proceedings.
The Cathedral built between 1879 and 1888, was designed by noted Australian architect Edmund Blacket (1817 – 1883) who also designed the University of Sydney and over 100 churches including St. Andrew's Cathedral, Sydney and St Saviour's Cathedral, Goulburn. The first service at St George's was held on 8 August 1888. The Cathedral underwent an extensively restoration between 2005 and 2008. It has a very pleasant interior. The architecture design of the Cathedral is described as Victorian Academic Gothic. When we entered from the rear (west) entrance we were greeted to an attractive Nave with the traditional columns and arches on either side of the centre rows of wooden individual seats. At the very front at the back of the Chancel is an impressive three panelled stain glassed window. Above the rear entrance is the West Church organ installed in 1993. The casework is made of Tasmanian oak and the front pipes are of burnished tin. This large organ above the main entrance compliments quite nicely the three panelled stain glass window at the back of the Chancel .
Adjacent to the Cathedral building is the equally historic Burt Memorial Hall built in 1917 but refurbished with a new roof between 2012 to 2014. It honours Archibald Burt who came half way round the world to be the first Chief Justice of Western Australia, and earned a reputation for fair dealing with the Indigenous peoples. The hall was dedicated to the memory of the Burt's son, Lt Theodore Charles Burt who was killed in World War I in July 1916 at the age of 23. It is here where we all assembled after the Church Service to enjoy refreshments, served graciously to us by Church volunteers. This was a lovely means for us to get to know some of the local congregation members and also admire the beauty of the interior of this hall. Adorning the walls are framed photos of past notable Cathedral leaders and the centrepiece is a four panelled stain glass window – sadly not able to be fully admired due to our visit being in the evening. The hall also boasts a lovely ceiling with interesting brown wooden cross beams.
In the grounds of the Cathedral is Ascalon, a contemporary sculpture commissioned by the Cathedral in 2009 on the theme of St George and the Dragon. It’s an interesting piece of abstract artwork and as it was evening the sculpture was lit up with lights which enhanced its appearance. Ascalon, named after the lance used by St George to slay the dragon, apparently aims to evoke a sense of righteous power and victory over a force of darkness and oppression. It stands 18 metres high and it was an added attraction to the Cathedral complex.
Opposite the main west entrance to the Cathedral are the impressive heritage Old Treasury Buildings built between 1874 and 1905. These buildings, left idle for 20 years, now incorporate the luxury Como The Treasury Hotel. Another pleasing sight opposite the Cathedral in George Street is the 13 storey Council House. As we had an evening visit to the Cathedral, we were able to see the ever changing spectrum of colours (red, blue, green, yellow and others) on the front of the building so spectacularly lit up with multiple lights.
The Cathedral is open every day for visitors who wish to admire its historic, heritage architectural features or to engage in silent reflective prayer and a visit is recommended. However, to experience the Cathedral at an actual Service took away the museum novelty of the place and instead brought the Church to life. That made our visit even more special.

As cathedrals around the world go, there's nothing particularly amazing about this one. It's not on a truly grand scale, indeed I've seen bigger ordinary churches than this. There's a lot of wood rather than stone. There are a couple of fine stained glass windows. It's a little gloomy, as there are few windows really letting the light it. It's nice enough, but there's no "wow" factor. Worth visiting if you're passing, but not worth a special trip.

The church is also widely used for exhibition.
For a cathedral not so big and rather simple, but well worth a visit.
Beautiful glass windows and a very special organ with a kind of trumpets.

We popped into the cathedral on route to CBD and were fortunate to be present whilst one of the local girl schools were rehearsing and practicing some hymns. The cathedral is just beautiful both inside and out and presents you with some appreciation of the skills of the workforce responsible for its construction and maintenance.

If you are religious or not, a beautiful building and worth a walk about. Next to the Westin in the City.

St Geoge's Anglican Cathedral was built of bricks, like most early buildings in Perth. It is not spectacular, but it represents the people and city from whence it came. The wooden ceiling is well-made, and is worth inspection. St George's is an integral part of Perth, it is hard to imagine the city on the Swan without it.

I had visited some years ago but a first for my wife. Beautiful structure in the English Gothic Revival style and dating to 1879 and consecrated in 1888. Since then there have been various additions, the Tower in 1902, Burt Memorial Hall in 1948, Soldiers Chapel in 1923, West Gallery and new organs in 1993. All additions are blended beautifully with the original structure. Internal treasures include the Baptismal Font, Statue of St George, the Pulpit of Normandy stone, the High Altar, and the Brass Eagle Lectern. It would be remiss of me not to mention the magnificent stained glass windows. Above all, it is a place of worship, a place to stand a while and reflect.

We enjoyed a walk through the almost empty church and felt welcome to explore. The floor has recently been polished and the leadlight windows were beautiful. I love when old churches have open doors and we can wonder in and enjoy the beauty and peace.

No, there isn't public parking space at the Cathedral, and works at the nearby Old Treasury Building mean that the area is currently more congested than usual. There is ticketed street parking nearby, though, and a large public car park in Pier Street, about an eight-minute walk from the Cathedral.
