Babich wines are well known in Croatia and when we saw that they also produce wines here we had to come for a tasting. Wonderful. The wine tasting was very extensive and informative and yes they tasted so good. We did also have a cheese platter and I must say the goat’s cheese was superb. When I return to New Zealand this place will go on my list for sure. Thanks for a wonderful afternoon.

Babich wines has become our "must visit" destination when we're in Auckland as it never disappoints.
The wines are wonderful, the service and knowledge from Jake superb and the entire experience of tasting wine in a country atmosphere so close to the city cannot be beaten.
The wines are not expensive either which is a bonus, so yes, we'll be back for more.

Amazed when friends that live in Aukland took us there. Great history and you see how city has engulfed the country side. They certainly make excellent wines and the guy doing the tasting was very informative not only on the wines but on the company and history of the whole area. Several people came in and bought wines while we are there, being so local to the city quite easy to do. Worth a look.

This is a hidden gem. Not a great drive to get here but very worth it. A little oasis close to the city. The secret is that they grow their grapes in other regions. Really good history of the vineyard and the tasting is outstanding. Carol was excellent.

We toured here as part of our NZ WinePro all-day trip with John, our guide for this party of 6. We expected, of course, exposure to some mighty fine wines but the unexpected history lesson was the most important thing we took away (besides a bottle or 2 of great wine).

The Babich family are Croatian and trace their migratory roots back to about 1914 and just how did that happen? What prompted these families to make the 11,225 mile trip (as the crow flies) from the Dalmatian Islands in Croatia to the outback of New Zealand? And what about the connection to wine making?

The Croatians have been making wine since the time of the ancient Greeks. With a long history and well-accomplished results, they were no new kids on the wine-making block.

Something of monumental historical significance happened in 1914: WW I reared its ugly head in Europe and, when Austria's Archduke was assassinated in Bosnia, things went from really, really bad to horribly, miserably worse.

Life was pretty much hard-scrabble in the Dalmatians but now starvation-level food shortages and forced military conscription into the Austrian Army stirred the pot of discontent. Croatian losses during WW I ranged from 190,000 to 250,000 civilian and military casualties; in human loss terms, that would have amounted to one in every ten Croatians.

It comes as no surprise that families would scrimp and save and sacrifice to scrape together the ship's fare needed so that their collective 14 year old sons could survive (and flourish). We tried to imagine how those young ones felt, alone on a ship, headed to a strange new land, not speaking the language, and no safety net. Sink or swim.

The up-side is there was quite a bit of "swimming" going on and, in time, vine stock from Croatia made its way along with them. And so it went, from adversity sprung success. Grapes are a lot like that, too. They need rocky poor soil to produce a good grape.

Babich is one of those Croatian success stories. They make an awesome rosé wine and we really liked their Riesling. They also make an Albariño wine (normally its associaed with Spain) that was exceptional, too. We're partial to whites so cannot give a fair review of their reds (although others in our party loved them).

Our group had a private tasting as part of our tour and we also benefitted from the video they showed. This was a fantastic stop. The owners tell us that folks bring a picnic lunch and buy some wine and sit on their beautiful veranda deck to enjoy the gorgeous views. There's this part of my psyche that hopes they have a designated driver. These are not low-octane sippies.

This was our 3rd visit to Babich over the years and it gets better and better each time. With Jake in action, we had a great time sampling a range of whites and reds, without any pressure to buy or taste anything we didn't want to. There was information given about the wines which in itself was fascinating too but the wines themselves were the real outstanding feature of the visit.
Cellar door prices are the cheapest we've seen on our journeys but the quality of the wines is right up there among the best.
A very enjoyable hour or so.

I had been there for a few times for wine tastings, it wasn't impressive. This time we went there for a wine tour, with tastings, cheese and discount. Holy cow, I wanna be there every week. Thanks Jake for your great idea!

We got here just in time before closing (at 5pm) and it was well worth it. I believe we were able to taste what we asked for and their prices for bottles were very reasonable. The staff were all very friendly too. A lot of the other local wine near Auckland runs $30-50 per bottle, but Babich has much more reasonably priced wine and everything we tried was good. If you are in the area, its worth visiting.
