So glad we took the time to take a ferry to visit this island! Loved the set up, wonderful guide and walk where we enjoyed learning about conservation efforts and being up close to the bird life! Highly recommend taking the time to visit Tiritiri!

I had the most amazing day at Tiritiri Matangi. Getting to and from the Island Reserve was well organized and enjoyable in itself with stunning views of the Auckland harbour and surrounding islands on the one hour ferry ride each way.
The Island Reserve is a glorious microcosm of the flora and fauna of New Zealand’s north island. In the six hours on the island, I was able to do two of the main tracks the Kawerau Track and the Wattle Track, which offered an extraordinary variety of tree, plant, reptile, insect and bird life accessible on well designed and safe gravel or wooden walkways, which were in excellent condition even after the resent deluge the had hit the area a week before I was there. The Visitor Center which was reached just past the halfway point offered exceptional views of the surrounding islands and an excellent gift shop with every tasteful item imaginable.
The best part of the visit however was the walking tour itself. I had requested a private guide with a primary expertise in the bird life and I completely lucked out. Bob a long time volunteer at Tiritiri Matangi and originally from Southampton, not only had an in depth knowledge of the Islands bird life and their behaviour, but he was equally well informed on every aspect of the islands natural life. A complete naturalist!! With Bob’s expert guidance I was able to spot just about all of the native and endemic birds that I was hoping to see and photograph. One of my best birding days ever!

I found it hugely uplifting and hopeful to visit Tiritiri Matangi - a small, magical, predator-free gem of an island wildlife sanctuary - and to see firsthand the results of a hugely successful rewilding and conservation project. The island was deforested and farmed until the 1970s, and there are photos on display showing how barren it once was. Then, from 1984, an army of volunteers replanted 250,000 native trees. The forest cover has regenerated incredibly well, and along with it, many endangered birds are now flourishing on the island, including the rare and colourful takahe bird, which blew me away. I was also hugely surprised to see a tuatara (prehistoric lizard). I’d heartily recommend booking a guided walk with your ferry ticket. Our guide Jenny was fascinating to listen to and hugely knowledgeable, both about the birds and their habitat, and she always knew where we’d have the best chances of spotting the different species along the way. Her in-depth commentary was worth way more than what we paid for it and we were very grateful. Nature exploration aside, the island is a really peaceful escape, where you can just sit and be among the chorus of birdsong, and imagine New Zealand as it must have been before humans came along!

We had a fantastic day. The weather was overcast, which turned out to be a blessing. We did 2 of the guided walks. Started off with the Kawerau Track from the wharf. This took about 2 hours at an average pace. When then lunched at the lighthouse. (Tip, More tables are at the back of the shop). Then we did the Wattle track back down to the wharf, which took about 45 minutes.
Most importantly we would advise paying for a guide. The Guide we had (Bob from Southampton, UK) was super knowledgeable about the island and wildlife in general. He basically made the trip as he was able to engage with 3 generations of the family to keep the younger ones interested and asking questions.
We will do this trip again at during another session to experience the wildlife in another cycle.

Tiritiri Matangi Island is a day trip by ferry from central Auckland. The 1.5 hour trip takes you past the northern beach neighborhoods and across the channel from Gulf Harbour to the island. The crew on Explore ferry Te Maki were caring and professional.
Once on the island, the short, personalized tour with a knowledgeable and passionate eco- hero guide is highly recommended. Our guide Pam helped us spot endangered stitch bird, saddlebacks, whiteheads, bellbirds, robin, my personal favorite the cute wee rifleman (like a tiny green ball of fluff) and of course the iridescent Tui. She regaled is with island history and stories of birds saved from the point of extinction.
Then we were free to explore the island and swim in the clear, warm waters of Hobbs Bay until it was time to return by ferry to the city.
This is a chance to support important science and New Zealand’s precious and unique bird life while having a fabulous gulf island adventure. Highly recommended.

Wow! What a fantastic day out to see some of the rarest birds plus a Tuatara or 2! What an amazing spot & after living in Auckland for 25 years …..should have gone sooner! Thank you Neal for your fantastic guiding. It was great to meet you & Linda and hear the years of commitment you have made to the island.

We were fortunate to be able to book to stay in the DoC hut for 4 nights. A fabulous chance for a quiet break from the busy world but with internet service (no wifi). So many birds to see and beautiful walks to go one.

Hi are you allowed to take your own boat and anchor off Tiritiri Matangi and take a tender in and join the walking group at 10.15am .?
Thanks Andy😊

Yes, but there's a fee of $10 payable to the guide or at the end of the tour. And also double check that you are not bringing anything you shouldn't onto the island.

Hi, if I was to kayak or make my own way to Tiritiri, can I still get onto a guided tour? When do they run? Or can I just walk around on my own?
Tiritiri
Auckland, New Zealand12 bidrag
Morena, yes you certainly can kayak over to Tiritiri - just check the wind and tides first though I'm sure you are aware of that. Also we ask you to check your kayak for any stowaways - plague skinks, mice and rats.
The guided walks go from the wharf at 10:15am Wed to Sunday and are $10 which you can pay in the shop at the end of your walk or you are always free to wander around on your own. Please keep to the tracks, the bush and un-mown grass is for the birds and reptiles!
See you on the Island soon I hope.

Are there lodging accommodations on Tiritiri Matangi Island? Are there night walks for Kiwi viewing?

Auckland, New Zealand12 bidrag
Yes, you can stay on Tiritiri Matangi Island. The Department of Conservation have a bunkhouse which can be booked through their website. There are 15 beds available but weekends are often busy and difficult to get a bed. We don't run night walks but can certainly give lots of advice on the best places to go and can give you red cellophane for your torch. I hope we'll see you on the Island soon.

If I want to visit Tiritiri matangi island...can I go there without joining any local tour or I have to join local tour?

Auckland, New Zealand12 bidrag
Tiritiri is an open sanctuary, you don't have to join a guided group - just take your time enjoying the bush and the bird life and be back at the Wharf by 3:15pm to catch the ferry back to Auckland

When you do the tour, does everyone have to stay together or can we just go to a beach there and relax?

You can do your own things as long as you get back to the ferry in time! There are plenty of paths around the island that enable you to freely explore.
Yes there are beaches around the island - our favourite spots are around the other side of the island, although these beaches are more stoney than sandy by memory but beautiful spots.

Hi, how can I get here if I'm not here Wednesday - Sunday? Are there any other ferry lines, or are there water taxis (or are they super expensive?) Thanks
Tiritiri
Auckland, New Zealand12 bidrag
Yes, there are water taxis but they are expensive, around $400+. The ferry comes Wednesday to Sunday and every day for the 3 weeks over the Christmas period. Private boats can also come out to Tiritiri we just ask them to check their boats for stowaways - rats, mice, rainbow skinks etc. to keep the Island safe.

You mentioned taking a backpack, and I am concerned about our US backpacks not being biosecure enough. They have mesh pockets on the outside for carrying water bottles. Everything else zips, but one outside pocket is mesh. Does the whole thing need to be zipped, with everything inside? If so, would one be easy to find in Auckland?

Coming in November from USA. Jet lag, and all that! We are staying in Auckland for a few days. Where is a good place to get lunch and water to take with us to Tiritiri Matangi. If you have been to Kapiti and had to choose one, which would it be? We are also going to Stewart Island and plan to visit Ulva. We like birds!

Make sure you take anti nausea pills at least half an hour before you get on the ferry as sometimes the journey is very rough.
