We also have a boat cruise as part of the tour, it worth every pennies. The walk was relatively easy, had a late 70s traveling with us, no problem at all.
The day was overcast and drizzle a bit unfortunately but that’s part of the nature! There are some picnic tables and seats, bring some food and drinks with you for the walk. Visitor centre’s staff was great.
The commentary on the boat was excellent, loved kiwi’s sense of humour :)

The parc was amazing and so beautiful, the hike was easy. Just a bit too expensive compared to other natural parcs. Would recommand it

Wowzer a not to miss! I have been to many national parks and nature preserves and this has to be up there in the top ten! A beautiful self-guided walk through the geothermal valley, surrounded by hotsprings, very cool vegetation and birds and all at your own pace, we took about three hours, you could do it in less or take the better part of the day. Absolutely stunning views and lots of birds to watch. We also took the boat trip at the end it was great and a better chance to see more geysers. Plus added benefit the Cap'n was great and had spent time piloting in Alaska waters so we had a good chat about that too. The walk is also easy for kids and even better when you are done there are buses that bring you back to the top/carpark so even good for us older folks and people with kids. :)

We visited this place at late afternoon, and i think this was a good idea. No crowds, we met only a few people on the road and it made the place more exotic.

What a fantastic opportunity. Thank you to the entire WVV team for an awesome experience. The walk was beautiful, native trees and birds abound. Historical sites and a good amount of information available. The colours produced in some areas were unreal. The boat trip around Lake Rotomahana was fabulous and learning all about the eruption was quite remarkable, we were lucky enough to wait for the big geyser to go off twice (it goes every 7 minutes) and to see the lesser seen Angels Wings geyser go off.

A Mesmerizing Journey Through Waimangu Thermal Wonderland
Visiting Waimangu Thermal Wonderland was an enchanting experience that exceeded all my expectations. This geothermal park, located near Rotorua in New Zealand, offers a unique and awe-inspiring glimpse into the Earth's geothermal activity, and it is a must-see for nature enthusiasts and anyone looking to experience something truly extraordinary.
Booking and Arrival:
The booking process was straightforward and efficient, with plenty of information available on their website about the various trails and tours. Upon arrival, the friendly staff provided us with a detailed map and helpful tips to make the most of our visit.
The Trails:
Waimangu offers a range of walking trails suitable for different fitness levels, each providing stunning views and access to various geothermal features. I opted for the full walking tour, which took approximately 3-4 hours at a leisurely pace. The paths were well-maintained and clearly marked, ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience.
Geothermal Features:
The geothermal features at Waimangu are nothing short of spectacular. From the vividly colored pools to the steaming vents and bubbling mud pots, every turn offered something new and fascinating. Highlights included the brilliant blue Inferno Crater Lake, the otherworldly Frying Pan Lake, and the impressive silica terraces. The diverse range of geothermal activity on display is a testament to the dynamic nature of our planet.
Scenery and Wildlife:
In addition to the geothermal wonders, Waimangu is set in a lush, green valley teeming with native flora and fauna. The combination of vibrant plant life and geothermal activity creates a surreal and picturesque landscape. Birdwatchers will be delighted by the variety of native birds, and the peaceful environment makes it easy to appreciate the natural beauty of the area.
Boat Cruise:
I highly recommend adding the boat cruise on Lake Rotomahana to your visit. This serene lake tour provides a different perspective of the geothermal features, some of which are only accessible by boat. The knowledgeable guide shared fascinating insights into the history and geology of the region, making the cruise both informative and relaxing.
Educational Value:
Throughout the park, informative signboards and displays provide interesting facts about the geothermal features and the history of the area, including the eruption of Mount Tarawera in 1886, which created the Waimangu Volcanic Valley. This educational aspect enhances the overall experience, making it not only visually stunning but intellectually enriching as well.
Facilities:
The facilities at Waimangu Thermal Wonderland were excellent. The visitor center has a well-stocked gift shop and a cozy café offering a range of refreshments. The restrooms were clean and conveniently located.
Value for Money:
Considering the unique experience and the well-maintained facilities, the entry fee to Waimangu Thermal Wonderland is very reasonable. The opportunity to witness such a wide array of geothermal phenomena in one place is truly worth every cent.
Final Thoughts:
Waimangu Thermal Wonderland is a breathtaking destination that offers a rare glimpse into the Earth's geothermal processes. The combination of stunning natural beauty, fascinating geothermal activity, and rich history makes it a must-visit attraction in New Zealand. Whether you're a nature lover, a geology enthusiast, or simply looking for a memorable adventure, Waimangu Thermal Wonderland will not disappoint.

There are lots of geothermal parks around and of the two we researched and put at the top, this one was the better one. It is a one way hike with buses to return you, and there are 3 different lengths of walks to choose from. Best of all, since all are in a line, you can decide what length you want as you go and reach each of the 3 bus stops. The map is super clear and instructive to go with the well marked paths and points of interest.

Very scenic self guided walked through the Geothermal Valley. The info sheet and info board along the way are very helpful explaining the history of the area.
At the end of the 90 minute walk, we went on the boat trip along the lake and our skipper gave us lots of history about the lake’s formation and the surrounding valley.
The only downside was that the cafe ha: limited options after we got back from the walk/cruise at 1430!

Is Te Puia similar sights to Waimangu? If we only have time to see one, recommendations
Skrevet 26. januar 2017
Different, so it's like comparing apples and oranges.
Te Puia is more commercial, and the geyser when it goes off is quite satisfying. They also have the cultural displays, the kiwi house, and a very good shop with locally made arts & craft items.
Waimangu was a more natural setting, with less crowds, and the boat trip on the lake (extra) was a different perspective on how the volcanoes create the landscape. Their mud pools were quite active while we were there.
If you are short of time and won't have an opportunity to see Kiwi or take in a cultural experience elsewhere, Te Puia will give you a more time effective experience.
We were glad we did both.

There are several thermal sites near Rotorua like Waiotapu, Waimangu Volcanic Valley, The craters of the moon, Orakei Korako thermal park etc. I just wanna do one and which is the best among all these?
Skrevet 15. desember 2016
I love Waimangu. Atmospheric with wonderful history and bird life. Really calming and scenic. Great cafe at the top as well and the bus is very handy. Make sure you get the boat tour included in the ticket price. The commentary and images are amazing of what has happened in the area.
Skrevet 15. desember 2016
We only have time to do either Wai-O-Tapu or Waimangu. For those who have done both which would you recommend. We are a family with children aged 7,9 and 11.
Skrevet 26. oktober 2015
Definitely, without question, do Waimangu over Wai-O-Tapu!! There is no comparison, I think. The kids are old enough to keep up with the walking and will find it much more interesting. Plus, you can go at your own pace and there a plenty of places to stop and rest. I think the kids (and you) won't be disappointed if you choose Waimangu over Wai-O-Tapu. Enjoy!

Need to find out if this park is suitable for an elderly couple who have difficulty walking long distances, particularly rough uphill tracks.
Skrevet 27. desember 2014
I would not suggest this particular place for seeing the volcanic colours etc...perhaps the more gentle walk at Waka along the far end of Fenton Street on the pre boarded walkways would be more suitable, it is more commercialised but just as great to visit.
