I took the 915 ferry over with the intention of staying until 1215. Although I loved the island and the walks, the timings given are huge over estimates unless you are a very slow walker! So I had covered everything I wanted to by 11am so went back on the 1115 ferry.
If you take a picnic, I think 2.5 hours is a good time. If you are just walking then 1.5 hours is enough.
Lovely views and interesting history.
An enjoyable trip from Wellington.

Great day out with teens
You can go trekking which is a 45 mins walk and some sheep along the way . Water is clean and we can play along the beach . Fun day out. The ferry is about 30 mins ride and last ferry in summer is at 3.45pm . We took the 11.15 boat. Plenty of time . Bring your own drinking water

Such a relaxing ferry trip over and back on East by West Ferry. Informative debriefing before exploring flora, fauna and views from Matiu. Pathways are wide and well maintained. Visitor Centre and signage interesting and helpful. Thoroughly enjoyed this special predator free island adventure. Definitely going back for a walk in nature. Uplifting for me

A local friend suggested we visit out here for the views and I’m so glad that we did! It’s a lovely day out from Wellington, with a ferry ride out to the island then various walking trails and a chance for a swim just near the ferry wharf.
The DOC staff are welcoming, and very thorough in their bio security check to make sure the island remains pest-free.
Please note there are almost no facilities on the island so bring all your own food and water. And on a sunny day, some of the tracks are quite exposed.
There are stunning views, lovely forests and pastures, historic buildings - a worthwhile addition to your Wellington itinerary

Somes Island is a beautiful place to visit. It was educational and knowledgeable about the history of the place. Moreover, thanks to the Department of Conservation for maintaining the island. It is one of a kind.

Matiu/Somes Island is the largest of three islands of Wellington Harbour. Beautiful and worth a visit for its wildlife, history and scenic views.

Excellent day trip from Wellington. It is only a 20 minute trip. Once there it is a nice 75 minute or so walk around the island to see the flora and fauna as well as the history of the island. Well worth a visit.

Went by ferry from Days Bay (shorter trip and it was a rough day). Been here before so knew what to look for and where to go. Was able to lean into the wind without falling over! Walked around the island and through the quarantine buildings and up to the gun emplacements (really extremely windy up there!). The old grave memorial on way up from the jetty is interesting. The small museum has some very interesting facts especially about the internees and German POW's. We went back to the jetty through the bush and waited for the ferry in the cabin that everybody has to go through for a briefing and inspection on arrival at the island. Had a chat to the DOC ranger about the island and boarded the ferry for a trip back to Days Bay. Definitely worth a visit - put aside a few hours and check out the ferry timetable before going though

It’s not excessively steep at all, the path from the wharf area is well formed and you can stroll along at your own pace. It is a typical walking track. If you do the circuit to return down to the wharf, the path through the trees is wide and sheltered. If you feel more comfortable, a hiking stick may give more confidence. However it really is a very pleasant walk. Once you are in the area where the buildings are, its quite flat. The views are wonderful. It gives you a different perspective of Wellington. Recommend you wear sturdy footwear though for comfort and to avoid slips. Hope this helps.

Is there any way an elderly lady can get a ride to the top of the island
Skrevet 17. februar 2018
There must be a utility vehicle or two on the island, as there are roads, plus a visitor center and some simple lodging to service. But, without knowing for sure, I would tend to doubt that they'd be available for visitor use. Parts of the island are marked as "wheelchair access," and there is a management plan calling for expansion of accessibility. But vehicle access for visitors is another matter. So here is a suggestion:
All the harbor islands, including this one, are managed by the Harbor Island Kaitiaki Board. I checked the board's website, which lists as contacts for Matiu/Somes Island: "Island Rangers, Jo Greenman or Emma Dunning, telephone 568 6555 or email matiusomes@doc. govt.nz." You might give it a try. Good luck!

As you will have seen no, there isn't a Seatoun ferrry. We usually go from Days Bay because there is free parking there, and good coffee, ice-creams and food over the road so you can get your fix before leaving.

Are the walks suitable for 5 year olds /
Skrevet 13. januar 2015
Yes, it is a great place to take the kids. I think you could even get around with a buggy for a lot of the island. There is one very steep track but you wouldn't need to go up it. Just take all you need for the day because there is only water there.
