Here for one reason only - to see some documents in a small room.

..and I was completely over-whelmed and emotional...

I would thoroughly recommend this for all New Zealanders - possibly one of the most significant things I have done as an adult. Walk in off the street, it's free and takes 30 minutes.

The rimu carved room where the treaty is house is an amazing work of carpentry/art and the roll of the women's suffrage signature was really impressive. There was an interactive piece where you can see the sailing of the boats/ships to have treaty signed and another where you can look up surnames to see if an ancestor signed the suffrage doc.

What a privilege to see a historic document like this on show. It is well-presented in a light-protected exhibit.

We viewed the historic documents and the adjoining displays. It was mildly interesting and didn’t take long. Maybe if we were on a guided tour it would have been better.

We came here for the three documents - the declaration of independence, the original treaty documents and the petition for female suffrage. Beautifully presented with some great explanations and some thought provoking video footage. Compliments a visit to the Waitangi treaty grounds wonderfully. Fantastic!

A very interesting and informative display in the entrance . A great little shop. A cafe with comfortable seating , good selection of food, coffee , tea and other refreshments . We did not have time to explore further.

Enlightening insight to the Treaty

The Waitangi treaty whilst contentious forms an important part of New Zealand history.
As a new national to NZ this was educational and important.
The room created to house the treaty is remarkable and this venue should be on every Wellington visitors agenda.

We made our way here in the forlorn hope of seeing something of the Nation’s Art and Literature. We did glimpse a handful of portraits on a distant wall and were allowed to go in and view.
Admittedly there was the other exhibit which other reviewers have found interesting and probably justifiably so. However we searched in vain for any of NZ’s many works of fiction, or books on NZ Art, for sale in the bookstore., sorry, giftshop..
The much mentioned cafe seemed so large we thought it a tad incongruous and superfluous in a spacious building intended to be primarily a library.

There are currently three interesting displays on the main floor. One of them is about the agreements between the Maori people and the British government and ends with a description and photographs of the petition for women’s suffrage in New Zealand.

Another display is on Children of the Holocaust, a very serious and poignant discussion of the 1 million Jewish children who were murdered by the Nazis and the half million children of other nationalities and faiths who were also murdered.

We ducked in to avoid the rain and was pleasantly surprised. The treaty and suffragette exhibit was interesting and informative. They looked to have a lively, inviting cafe and the gift shop was stocked with thoughtful, unique things I hadn't seen elsewhere.
