A nice place to spend your morning, inderesting architecture. They have early European Art objects and some special exhibitions. One of the best Robin White’s exhibitions was hosted.

It must be a year since my last visit to the Art Gallery, and I was extremely impressed by the variety of new exhibitions.
I particularly went to see "A Ship's nail & a feather", but found myself exploring all the different galleries. As usual there are some exhibits which are downright weird, but each to their own. I especially enjoyed the exhibition focussing on NZ women artists & enjoyed seeing familiar works by Rita Angus, Margaret Stoddart, Frances Hodgkins etc.
Great winter activity, esp with the Canterbury Museum closed for 5 years.

We have visited the Christchurch Art Gallery previously and find the artwork not really to our taste. As on our previous visit we did enjoy the 50s/60s tables and chairs hanging over the staircase. The cafe/restaurant is excellent with great staff and interesting food.
The highlight, though, was downstairs in the carpark where we could see the stabilizers that had been installed to minimize earthquake damage. The bases were painted in a range of colours befitting an art gallery - just brilliant. Well worth seeing.

I tend to agree with the previous reviewer - a great building but I didn't really connect to the particularly exhibitions that were on when I visited. Still, I'd go back again in the hope that there'd more art of interest next time.

We were touring NZ and we made it a point to visit art galleries in each city we spent an overnight in; and this gallery was very close to our hotel. The building is spectacular, the staff are very nice, and the neat gallery store has lots of good stuff. However, the mix of art on exhibit is a bit unbalanced: little classic art, a lot of alternative large Installations taking a lot of space. It seems to be a trend: galleries of spectacular architecture with substandard art exhibits. In any case, it is free and the exhibits may be more interesting next time.

We were lucky with weather for most of our NZ holiday, but Christchurch was cold, windy and wet! So we were looking for indoor activities. The art gallery was fine-we really enjoyed the large exhibition of prints by NZ artists, but there were a couple of other local artists whose work was not to our taste. I'd rate the Antarctic centre and Quake City as better options, but this was still a very nice way to spend a couple of hours out of the weather.

This is a very attractive art gallery building. The exhibits change so definitely worth checking out. And it is free! I liked one of the galleries a lot and the others were not my cup of tea but art is subjective. It is more on the modern, abstract side. It is small so don’t a lot much time to this but worth popping in as part of Christchurch tour. There are art galleries in the area so check them out as well. The gift shop is nice.

I needed way more time in this gallery than what I allowed. The actual architecture is stunning and modern, allowing for space and light in which to display the artwork. The bottom floor has some stunning local lithographs that tell the story of colonial and the mid 1900’s in New Zealand. All of it is beautifully curated. While it was part of an exhibition it could easily be a permanent display.

Outstanding exhibits for a first timer traveling abroad. This was worth the price of admission ( free) and then some.
