You do need to be moderately fit to tackle the trail, especially if you push on past the saddle. The views are great and the higher you go the better they get - even just a few hundred metres past the saddle.
Beware in October, or anytime the snow is beginning to melt, the summit track becomes slippery, wet and muddy and care (and good hiking shoes) is required.

30/9/2024 We started the hike from the top of the gondola (limited time) in the final week of the skiing season. The track is well marked, wide and scenery spectacular !
Hiking boots are ideal as it's steep and if muddy, slippery. It's steep and we were huffing and puffing, but taking it slow and loving the moment of fresh air !

Time was against me, so I walked up the Tiki trail and then to the Ben Lomond lookout. If it says 1 hour I learnt to be kind to me and double it. So 1 hour on tiki trail is for normal people. It took me 2 hours. Nice and rugged with mist challenges in the first quarter.
The lookout was great for a light lunch and sunshine.
I’ll have to come back to complete this walk. Definantly need the daylight for the Real Ben walk.
If you have bad knees or have trifocals I’d suggest the gondola down.

It's my very first solo hiking. The path is clear. The track mostly in an open space with fascinating view. It also has a non-flush toilet near the Saddle point. The hardest part is from Saddle point to the Summit point. But it was all paid off when I reached the top.

This was a challenging but wonderful hike. It's not a terribly long trail, but there is a lot of uphill hiking, some of it steep. The views at the top, however, are spectacular. If you're worried about whether you can handle it, the good news is that you can do a moderate part of the hike to the saddle area where you get excellent views. From the saddle you can clearly see the remaining uphill and make a decision about what you want to do.
Also, we rode the gondola up, which cuts off about 1,000 fees of uphill. The part of the trail you miss is just a trail through the woods. So, unless you want to prove how tough you are, or need to save the cost of the gondola, by all means take the gondola and start hiking the trail from there.

Well, it took us 2hrs from the gondola to the saddle, mind you we are not the fittest and I'm a 130kgs, I went 1/4 of the way up to the summit but I was tapped out so I turned around. The views from the saddle are incredible. It took us 1hr12mins to get back down.

We did this walk in early spring and there was no issue with snow apart from a little at the top. The walk took us 7.5 hours all in (including the tiki trail 1 hour each way). We both had backpacks with food and water, as the walk was very difficult. The view at the top was stunning and not many others did it, we saw maybe 15 others in total doing the peak. There are also various different options to turn around before the summit with lookouts. There is a toilet before the summit at the saddle lookout 2 hours from the gondola.

started this walk at 5am on a beautiful autumn day in QT. Saw the milky way and Mt Cook with the naked eye. One of the best views I have ever seen from the top. I started from Nomads and it took me roughly 3.5 hours including breaks to get to the top, however my moving time was about 2 hours to the top. It gets steep once you get to the saddle and turn left but it is worth it. A must do for hikers and casuals in Queenstown

Amazing views to make the uphill assent worthy with an easier decent on your way home.
The trail had a vibe of enthusiastic hikers both local and international which made the hike enjoyable...

Where is best to park free or park for lower fees to get to this hiking route?
Skrevet 23. desember 2019
I read an article that said the trail is only open November through March. Trying to confirm this information. Will be visiting in early May, and this was one of the hikes on our to-do list. Wondering if we need to make other plans? Thanks in advance.

We were there in December, which was summer, but if it isn't open there are a lot of other good hikes nearby. We did Lake Hayes one day, which is only about a half hour from Queenstown, and the walk through the Gardens continues for awhile.

Possible to park free if we take car to start of gondola station/tiki trail start point. Or should we take public transport to reach Beecon street ?
Skrevet 20. januar 2019
I was there in December. There are several parking lots that give you early bird specials, around 12-13 NZ$. I most of the town parking is free but it is time limited, you need to look for blue parking signs that tell you how long (in minutes) you can stay in different zones. When I hiked Ben Lomond parked at Park St. for about 8 hours and had no problems. I recommend go to the tourist info for more details on where you can park longer for free.

Hi. Thanks for the reviews on Ben Lomond Track. My wife and me are moderately fit, and run regularly. We are planning to hike Ben Lomond on 14 Sep, and were wondering if you would have any recommendations. We have shoe cleats, but are not keen on poles. We are short on time and have a max of 7 hours to our disposal. Any comments are appreciated.

Make sure you check with DOC as to conditions on Ben Lomond in September
As to risks from snow and ice
Just last week a guy was rescued after being badly injured in avalanche on Ben Lomond
was swept 400m down the mountain and over cliffs.

Option of driving up to near summit? we are short of time, can't do hiking. Wonder if there is an option to drive up somewhere if not direct to the summit to shorten the time to go up to summit?
Skrevet 29. mars 2018
Sorry I didn’t see this earlier but yes start the track from the top of the gondola. Take your time it’s not too hard to the saddle, but it gets more difficult from the saddle to the summit. The views are great even early on the track. Highly recommend. Be prepared for all weather, take plenty of water, snacks and raincoat. Enjoy!
Skrevet 14. april 2018
Can someone tell me the length of the track please? Starting both from the base of the hill or from the top of the gondola.
The tendency in NZ to use times for all tracks instead of distances is so frustrating.
Thanks

My Garmin watch measured 12km return starting from and returning to the top of the Skyline Gondola. It took us 6 hours 15 mins with numerous stops for snacks and to admire the views. We didn’t spend much time at the summit as we were surrounded by cloud. Don’t rush this hike as the views are too good to miss!

In summertime, is it possible to go to Ben Lomond tracks by quadricycle? Its because i´d like (if allowed or not impossible) to take someone there who is not able to walk that much. Thanks in advance

How many hours will the trek take?..for an average climber...
Skrevet 11. desember 2017
Hi Jonah
Its a bit tricky to answer without knowing your comfort level. Its all uphill there and all downhill on sore legs coming down.
From the lake to the summit, going at good walking pace with 3 stops up and 30 min at top, then back down via gondola took me about 6 hours. It can be done faster, or if you aren't used to walking downhill over gravel it can take a lot longer. Plan for 8, take all the water and food you will need and if you get back early have a burger and beer to celebrate. Remember conditions can change a lot in Queesnstown over 6 hours so check on weather and always take a little more than you think you will need for food and clothes

Hi guys, I'm interested in hiking Ben Lomond next weekend (mid July) but was wondering if there are any guided tours and places to rent the appropriate technical gear (ice pick, crampons, etc)?
Skrevet 7. juli 2017
I believe you can refer at the reception counter at the Gondola station if you need any gears/accessories to climb during winter. We had our climb during autumn and no guided tours needed just follow the trail. I'm not sure if they have different procedures during winter.
Skrevet 15. juli 2017
Hi guys,
Have planned to do this trek in late June. Anyone has any idea how snowy/ slippery it would be then? We're reasonably fit but we're just unsure about the conditions then. would it still be advisable to go around that time? If not, any other recommendations for a hike? Thanks in advance! =o)
Skrevet 16. mai 2017
In winter conditions alpine skills and experience are needed to attempt the summit of Ben Lomond. You should be prepared for snow and ice above the bushline - an ice axe and crampons may be required.
We recommend you visit the Department of Conservation visitor centre in Queenstown for updated conditions before attempting this track. You can also go in for more information on tracks suitable for winter conditions.
