Unfortunately had absolutely no view the whole of Day 2, it was just walking in clouds with about 2 metres of visibility. Check the weather forecast when you get to Luxmore Hut. If there is good visibility on Day 1, and low visibility predicted on Day 2, drop your bags off and keep walking to get a taste of the best views!

The views were absolutely amazing I loved every second but some of the walks were pretty long getting from the first hut to the second is like 8.5 hours long would definitely recommend it 100%.

To reach the location with stunning views, you need a minimum of 6 hours. Therefore, it is unsuitable for tourists with tight schedules. The other walking tracks lack excitement and do not offer the same appeal.

EasyHike were out-of-sight helpful. The track was closed overnight (went meant magical snowfall!! Not what we planned, but awesome)- and EasyHike re-relocated our car back to the start for us straightaway- we've used them before and I'd use them again, they are fabulous

Great challenge. Im glad Id read previous reviews & blogposts of this track as it helped me prepare myself for the hike, huts & changeable weather. Amazing views. Popular track as locals & tourists were either doing part of the track or going the whole way like I was. The shelters & toilets along the way were handy. With the hike uphill you cant help but break a sweat even in cold temperatures. The Huts were strong, basic & comfortable with solar powered lighting & gas stoves. It wasnt an easy feat but feel privileged to have seen & explored the track with its many amazing views

A nice way to spend 4 days in nature. The views are impressive for a stretch (especially on one of the stages), but visibility can vary greatly. The track is very easy to follow since the path is well marked at all times. The camping areas are not very good. The shelters are a better option, although the price is high for the facilities they offer. The rangers offer useful and interesting information at each shelter.

Absolutely incredible trip 3 nights and 4 days. The weather made it challenging with 75-85km winds and rain that stung from Luxmore Hut to Irisburn but it added to the trip. You just have to be prepared for all weather.
Loved every second of it and would do it again

A friend and I did the hike from Brod Bay to the Luxmore Hut. We took the 8:30AM water taxi across the lake and started hiking. As many reviews state - it is pretty much all up hill to get to the Luxmore hut. We had planned to go to the summit but it was windy and rainy so we hiked back down.
Highly recommend takinig the water taxi - take it early and make sure you are back by 4:30PM

My son and I had great weather (unusual?) for a three day trip. One night in Luxmore Hut and one night at Moturau Hut; both huts were clean yet full of trampers. The views from above treeline were magnificent, and the trek through the jungly lower elevation was spectacular as well.

We completed this tramp over four days, staying at Luxmore, then Iris Burn and finally Moturoa huts with our 16 and 19 year old children. We were incredibly lucky to get amazing weather with temperatures reaching 30oC up on the tops on our second day. This made the day very challenging - lots of water was needed! The descent to Iris Burn was very steep and hard on the knees. The park rangers were fabulous with their information and the hits large and comfortable. We felt very privileged to have walked in this amazing area and felt a great sense of achievement to complete it!!

Hi. I am new to the Great Walks tracks. Is 45L pack enough for 3N4D Kepler Track? I booked huts for three nights in the mid of February. I guess I can make it since I do not need a tent and other camping gears, but I need an advice. Cheers!
Skrevet 15. mai 2022
I did Kepler track a week ago and I went with a 65L pack and that was perfect for me. It all depends on how much clothes and food you pack. I would suggest that you pack your pack and test it out first, but for me 65L worked great. Enjoy the track it's absolutely amazing!

Hi Would anyone be interested in buying 2 tickets for kepler huts starting 3rd Feb sleeping in the huts for 3 nights? My and my partner are unable to go undoerinately.
Skrevet 29. januar 2020
Hi, am going to Kepler track and staying at the huts in Feb. Are the huts heated? What kind of sleeping bag would you recommend?
Skrevet 22. januar 2020
Hi, We only did day hikes. Sorry I can't answer your question.

Has anyone camped near Luxmore Hut? We missed out on booking the hut aren’t able to walk from Brod Bay to Iris Burn in one go. Anyone camped somewhere in between? I’m aware of the 500m rule so wondered if anyone knows of good camping spots near Luxmore.

Do the huts have cooking facilities e.g. stove, pots and pans please?
Skrevet 19. januar 2018
They have stoves and gas.
Need to take your own pots, pans, utensils and matches

Hello, Is it advisable to trek on our own or better to join a guided tour?
Pros & Cons?
Skrevet 23. desember 2017
No sure there is a guided tour. Not needed anyway. A reasonable level of fitness is still required for this hike. But the tracks are superb. Head to the Luxmore hut for your first night, be prepared for 3-4 hour climb. The view however, will knock your socks off once clear of the trees. Then get an early start on day two, you still have about 2 hours of climbing to do, but you will catch the early morning views as the sun gets up above the horizon and starts bouncing off the Southern Alps to the West. Take a good Sandfly repellent for huts two and three.

Hi there.
Just wondering what recommendations you all have for the track?
Good food to take?
Did you use hiking poles? 1 or 2? Did you need them?
Skrevet 24. september 2017
You can see the accomodation details here doc.govt.nz
Because of the weight , I carried most the dried food .
I had two poles I like bit of balance and it helped me a lot .

Hi, I'll be hiking the Kepler and Routeburn tracks later this year in December. I was just wondering if people had any suggestions on whether it's worth/safe bringing a camera (DSLR)?
Will this just be extra weight? Are iPhone quality photos good enough?
Thank you!
Skrevet 29. juli 2017
Definitely a camera if you have one. I used an iPhone but as I took lots of photos it had to keep getting turned on and off. If the weather is good, Day 2 of Kepler from Luxmore Hut is spectacular and a photographers paradise.

Hi guys,
We are planning on doing the Kepler in April around Easter. What can we expect in terms of weather and number of hikers? Is this one of the better walks for mountain views and peaks on the south island?
Cheers,
Skrevet 26. februar 2017
Also consider going to Glenorchy (near Queenstown) and checking out walking the mountains there. I believe you can walk west to the Routeburn track/Milford Sound National Park. Am sure.that would be much more spectacular.
Two superb day walks on the South Island are the Ben Lomond Trail in Queenstown. Start at lake level or by the gondola. The half day walk to the Rob Roy Glacier near Lake Wanaka was excellent, too, and well worth the drive down a very, very long unpaved road and crossing some fords.
Unable to comment on the weather as we were there in December and January. Do visit a local pharmacist though and buy sand fly spray. They regularly bit my partner and got me at Rob Roy!

Hi Julia.
I realise you did the Kepler nearly 3 years ago now but we'll be tackling it same week/month as you (end Jan in 2017) so your experience will help greatly. Climate (and hence equipment/weight):
1. What temp was it at night in the Luxmore & Iris Burn huts - do you think a lightweight 2 season sleeping bags would be OK?
2. Would you recommend taking full, and therefore heavy, Goretex type rain jackets? We usually use our down/warm kit for walking if chilly and put on lightweight ponchos in wet weather. I've found these fine in the Andes and Annapurna but are the winds really much stronger here which could cause a problem with Ponchos?
3. Any other tips for equipment to minimise weight?
Your advice would be really welcome.
Regards
Frank
