We drove on either side of the river and then took the cruise from Home Point to Windermere and return. It is really a tidal estuary with brackish water and flows northwards to Low Head and the dangerous reefs beyond. Many attraction on the banks and adjacent and more pointed out to us when on the cruise. Still used by smaller ships plying their trade between Launceston and other parts. Reputedly a great area for fishing. I think that the river can only be really appreciated by tourist like us by undertaking a local cruise with commentary.

You can drive along both sides of the Tamar, but nothing beats getting on the water. From the Launceston end, there are a couple of cruise options that will normally do the gorge, then to Batmans Bridge and back. Well worth it.

We went on a modest cruise( all the better cruises were sold out so get in quick to book.
The cruise ran for about 45-50 minutes with a really good guide explaining the sights. recommended

River can be misleading here... as it's actually a estuary. It stretches from the city of Launceston to the Bass Strait in northern Tasmania.

This estuary is 70 kilometres long. It is formed by the collision of the North and South Esk Rivers in the city of Launceston, which sits in the middle of the Tasmanian island. There is only one crossing for this body of water and you can find it in the rural town of Sidmouth. Batman Bridge connects the Batman Highway across the Tamar River using modern suspension architecture. It was actually where I took the photos I used on this review.

It's quite pretty standing on the edge of it's banks in Launceston... you follow it for quite a distance if you are travelling. It's very picturesque.

Cruise up the Tamar River was quite long with not an awful lot to see - some of the history was interesting. Staff on board the boat were very helpful and snacks were quite good. Beer and wine tasting was also available (free) and helped pass the time.

This lookout has some magnificent views of the Tamar River, North to Georgetown and south towards Launceston. It has toilet vacilities if they are needed.
When you look up and down the river you start to realise why Mathew Brady used this as his hiding place. His cave was 150m down below the top of the lookout. Back in the old days it was possible to climb down to go inside his cave but it has been secured now for many years.
Mathew's stealing was different to most stealers. He would steal for the poorer people of the State and he got invited into their houses on numerous occasions. He was known as the Fine Mannered Robber.
When he was caught and the court sentenced him to death by hanging, he received flowers from many of his lady friends he had stolen from.
When the weather got to hot to stay in the cave he went up to Notley Gorge and there is a tree up there called Brady's Tree.
Well worth a visit to the West Tamar History, with some lovely places to enjoy food.

We took a 4 hour Tamar River Cruise and it was an absolute highlight of our trip. Wonderful catering during the whole trip with fabulous staff who took care of everyone from beginning to end. Morning tea, lunch, a fully stocked bar and wine and beer tastings. The running commentary during the trip was amazing. So informative and entertaining and never once felt like it had been delivered a thousand times before which it must have been. Thank you to the crew for a wonderful experience.
