Surprisingly interesting. Rio Vista house is well set up and the gallery next door very interesting. Definitely worth taking the time to visit to understand the history of Mildura

We loved doing the Chaffey Trail. Such a vibrant history of the beginnings of irrigation in Mildura. We were so interested as we had followed the Chaffey Brothers in Southern California where they irrigated the desert from the Colorado River so new all about these boys. Its lovely to see Rio Vista still standing.... a gorgeous site. The walk along the river also very good seeing all the different exhibits and the cemetery as well. Well worth doing and very interesting.

The trail covers the history of Mildura and the Chaffey Brothers involvement in opening up and irrigating the area. Historically interesting and reasonably well presented although let down in some areas. Rio Vista is execellent, as is the old wharf and Lock 11. The Physche Pumps area needs attention with poor signage in and an ungraded road . Overall very interesting but let down in some areas.

Visited some of the main places on Saturday 14th March and Sunday 15th March. Whilst not actually following the trail itself we did visit many of the places on it. Pity we did not have a map so we could see it all.

The Rio Vista home is the beautiful home built by the Chaffey family at the height of their success bringing irrigation and the growth of the fruit industry in Mildura.
The house was bequeathed to the council in the 1950’s and they have extensively renovated the house to bring it back to the beautiful home it would have been.
A few rooms form an art gallery.
Entry to the home is free.

The Chaffey Trail consists of 12 sights that trace the development of Mildura and it is free to do at one's leisure. Half the places can be seen in Cureton Ave and Hugh King Drive by walking the pathways along the Murray river. A couple of other sights are in the town while the remaining ones are a short drive out of town.
Three that I found most interesting were - Rio Vista, Lock 11 and Mildura Weir and Big Lizzie which is on display in Barclay Square at Red Cliffs, on the Calder Highway 15 kms south of Mildura.
