We have visited many gaols on this trip but we had time for one more, however, this isn't too different from all the others we have visited, so still interesting, and there is a bit of information around the walls. The cells are fitted out with a variety of craft enterprises and if the cell was open then the person who makes the various items was working in there at the time. I thought this took away a bit from the gaol as an attraction but one part of me did think it was a fantastic use of a space that would otherwise be empty.

The Old Gaol Museum and Craft Centre is an interesting place to explore. Whilst it is listed as "The Old Gaol" it is not that many years ago that it was still in use as the Geraldton Gaol. Take time to read the stories and information provided throughout the site.
The craft elements of the centre are located within some of the cells and other rooms, and showcase a wide range of craft work. Chat to the clever people operating these elements and enjoy their stories.

Here you can see actual cells and othe gaol memorabilia from the first days of settlement. Punishments were very cruel in those times!

If you’re interested in Crafts this may be the place for you but not really enough information about the goal.

The building dates to 1863 when construction commenced on the cells and operated as a prison until 1984. It became a craft centre in 1989 to save it from demolition. the old communal cell displays historical information and a wonderful display of gemstones by Archie Ovens. The exercise yard still exists with the pavement marked out for a game of prison darts. Had a brief look at the craft cells that were open, some attractive offerings but not in my sphere of interest.

This gaol is worth the visit. There is no entry fee but you can donate if you wish. This is a grim reminder of what gaols should be like. The cells looked to be quite roomy until you realise that there were three to a cell. Quite a few of the cells had craft displays and were very good. A very informative

If you're into history, this will appeal to you as it was the area's jail from 1864-1985. The convict story in Australia is an interesting one and worth learning about. The jail was part of the Convict Hiring Depot. Convicts were a much-needed workforce to establish the Swan River Colony. Many of Geraldton's residents are descendants of those men. See the model and walk through the cells. Some are used to display crafts such as knitted items, embroidered pieces, macrame, tin can animals, paper flowers, doll clothes, scarves, woodworking, etc. Worth a quick stop if you're into history or crafts or architecture. Friendly staff.

We enjoyed looking around at the booths in the jail cells. There are still some empty ones, though. Listening to the history was fascinating.

On visiting the Old Geraldton Goal Craft Centre was very pleasantly surprised with the details of the history of the goal, the photos and artifacts but most of all was surprised to learn that most of the "cells" now house many various types of craft on display and also for sale at a very reasonable price.
Was talking to Marg Croft re her beautiful paper flowers which she makes into landscapes which are stunning I say it is well worth a visit
