Boulders on a beach
okt. 2021
As the title says, it’s some boulders on a beach. We parked at the doc car park rather than the gift shop. My family had a nice walk down the beach and took some photos. If we’d gone to the gift shop we’d have had to climb some stairs to the boulders, which for us would have been less fun.

Magic!

Moeraki Boulders is one of those most do's when you're in the area. About 30 years since I visited them, this trip was about 3 of us and covering more remote places and places one or some of us hadn't visited before.
We had an early start from Oamaru, to ensure we got to closer to low tide than high.
It was a stunning morning for a wander down the beach, encountering only 1 other couple as we went. While the country is struggling without tourism is a wonderful time for Kiwis to explore their own back yard without the crowds.
The unplanned highlight for us was we wangled sunrise here as well. It really was a spectacular sight - and no they're not big, they're just awesome.

Perfectly formed

Park at the DOC Carpark rather than the tourist cafe, and walk along the beach to the boulders.

I had expected larger ones, but these are perfectly formed.

Great cafe and views. Boulders, hmm...
mai 2021
Having been to the Moeraki Boulders now, I must admit I'm struggling to see what the attraction is. Yes if you try hard enough and squint you can imagine they're from a Star Wars scene, but it's a stretch.

Having said that, the area is well worth a visit for the outstanding cafe overlooking the stunning bay. Not to mention spending a couple of dollars to feed the super friendly alpaca by the carpark.

Beautiful beach

Not large boulders, but perfectly formed! The cafe by the car park provides tasty food with a million dollar view.

Isn’t geology wonderful?

Parking is free at the DOC car park and then it’s an easy, flat walk along to the boulders, rather than paying at the cafe and having to use their steps.
The boulders are worth a visit - especially to compare the weathered ones which are split open with the ones newly emerged ones.

Wet day - interesting - stopped raining for us to have a look around

Interesting formations - but worth a look at the banks as well - a lot of what appears to be mineral/ sap formations in the banks. The boulders are just as they appear - the most interesting are the ones that have cracked open with different formations inside. Worth a look - if you're there you have to go down to see them

Boulders like huge marbles

A must stop and visit this unique collection of natural rock formations.
Just a short walk from the cafe on the beach and well worth the photo opportunity.

Only accessible around low tide but a real facinating piece of nature

STOP. DO NOT TURN LEFT.
mai 2020
When you turn off the road, DO NOT then follow the big signs and turn left, as that road will take you to a cafe/souvenir tourist trap that wants you to pay just to use their stairs down to the beach.
INSTEAD drive straight down the road to a public and free access carpark, which is poorly signposted.
It's about an extra 100m walk, but it's flat and easy.
Make sure you go at low tide or there won't be much to see. The boulders also look particularly cool at sunrise or sunset when they cast shadows.

But how?
mar. 2021 • Par
The beach is stunning and the boulders leave you marveling over nature. But how were they made? How did they get like that? A great spot to stretch your legs if you're traveling the coast.
