A stunning site, with good signage at the open air viewing platforms at the Orellan Mirador. We went inside the tunnels, which was very interesting and well worth the small entrance fee. We all had to wear helmets because the rocky roof gets very low in places, but it is quite well lit. The visitors' centre in the village of Las Medulas has a leaflet in English, if you ask at the desk. The Roman technology and engineering was astonishing.

Speechless. I had seen it in photos and it already seemed great to me... but seeing it in person is... unspeakable... 2000% recommended!!!

On our train/bus trip to northern Spain we really wanted to experience the Roman gold mine remains and only had Monday available to do so, when all museums etc. are closed. Since there are no bus tours to Las Medulas on that day or no public bus even runs nearby and a taxi would have cost more than 150 euros, we started an open request to 2-3 local tour providers for a 4-6 hour private tour. Maria, CEO and sole employee of LEONESATOURS, responded quickly with a reasonably priced offer tailored to the situation and WE HAD A GREAT MONDAY IN THE BEAUTIFUL WEATHER IN THE ALMOST DESERTED NATURE PARK.
Maria picked us up at the hotel in Ponferrada at 9 sharp and we drove to the Mirador opposite the natural monument, where, standing right on the edge, you get a first overall impression of the actually artificially created landscape. Right next to the Mirador is the entrance to a Roman mine corridor which ends abruptly after 2-300 meters in the middle of a high rock face about 30 meters below the Mirador. On the way back to the fork into the valley of Las Medulas, Maria, who as a local knows the area like the back of her hand, also has a lot to say about the valley, its inhabitants and the chestnut trees that grow here almost in monculture. From the Las Medulas visitor center there is an approximately 5 kilometer long walk over hill and, above all, stone. The path, initially lined with ancient chestnut trees, quickly becomes a path as it goes a little higher under the red rocks and we can only marvel at how, on the one hand, human intervention 2000 years ago created completely new contours and, on the other hand, how nature has slowly reclaimed everything since then seems completely natural. We end the excursion by buying a bottle of nut schnapps in the village shop in Las Medulas with the information that there are only 51 Mondays in the year, that Maria from LEONESATOURS only exists once in the original and that she therefore needs to be contacted early for a tour

We took the guided tour of the center and the on-site explanations are worth it. It's a shame not to be able to access the cave due to landslides. It is a simple route and you can bring umbrellas as the paths are wide.

We loved this place, the views from the viewpoint but also the visit to the mine. It costs a couple of euros but it is nice to enter to see what these mountains are like inside and where they had to work to get the gold.

The marrows are great. The administration, a disaster. Now, it seems that when you go to visit Las Médulas everything takes you to the town of Las Médulas, where the Information Center is located. The state of all the useless and poorly maintained infrastructure of this town is regrettable, and I imagine it will be having a great time with all the people who, in good faith, go first to the Information Center. To begin with, there is a parking lot that says it costs €4 where parking caravans is prohibited. Well, there are caravans parked and, even if you want, it is not possible to pay the €4. Then you walk into the town, full of third-world beach bars unbecoming of a moderately advanced country. The restaurants are closed (I'm talking about October 11 at 1:30 p.m.) and, as a supreme grace (although I think the entire town responds to this motto), one of them included the phrase: “We open when we arrive and we close when we leave.” come on". I suppose that anyone who knows the area knows perfectly well that from the town of Las Médulas it is not possible to see their essence. Therefore, many people will believe that what they can see from there is all there is. Well, after the walk to the Information Center, we decided to go to one of the few places from which it is possible to enjoy this wonder. The Orellàn Viewpoint. Fortunately, views are the only thing management can't change. They are still wonderful. Once again, the infrastructure is a marvel of neglect and a lack of respect for the visitor. To start, again a parking lot, €3, that no one attends to. Walking the approximately 600 meters that separate the parking lot from the viewpoint, the first thing you find is access to one of the tunnels that said “no entry” with an excessive profusion of prohibition signs. Well, whoever wanted to went there, so much so that there was even a “botellón” at the end of the stairs. Passing this point you reach the platforms from which you can contemplate the essence of this visit. Here you find a missing step with the screws exposed, broken boards, many of them loose, garbage of all kinds; papers, bottles, cigarette butts and even some recent urine. Summary. I don't know what administration this marvel depends on, but they are doing it very badly. In most countries that I have visited, a monument like Las Médulas would be exquisitely cared for and respected and there would be employees who would be concerned about calling anyone who damages any infrastructure to order and in charge of keeping it clean and free of graffiti. What can we expect from someone who doesn't even bother to charge for the services they advertise? And what can we expect from those who allow the town of Las Médulas to grow in a disorderly manner and without efficient services? If you go to Las Médulas go directly to the Mirador de Orellan. They will see what interests them and will save unnecessary things from the town and the Information Center. Of course, take out insurance first in case you get a screw stuck in your foot or if you get infected by the gunk.

Spectacular natural setting. Although it can be visited for free, we prefer to hire a guided tour. The best views, from the Orellán Viewpoint.

A place worth making a stop and enjoying its views and history, easy access and signage, encouraging you at least to the platforms.

A unique and spectacular place to enjoy routes between impressive oaks and chestnut trees until you reach the different places to observe the characteristic reddish peaks. The town offers what is necessary to eat afterwards
to enjoy a beautiful experience. Very cool
