Australia is renown for its biketrails, but this is a classic. You can freely choose your distances and speeds. Great scenery the whole way. Arguably some of the most picturesque cycling. These shots are near Bright

*** Wang to Milawa section only *** The brochure does not give you an example of the signs you should be looking for. Trail meanders aimlessly though suburbia, when you want to get to destination. We cant even find a version of the signage as appears in Wang on google images to help out here on Trip Advisor. Hint: start outside of Wang township on Murdoch Rd towards Milawa, NOTHING like the brochure map indicates. Also signage varies very much thoughout the trail, so dont think to be on the lookout for same size/colour/symbols. Lovely trail poorly communicated.

Great little trail, especially for families, and dotted with great local producers. Met so many wonderful people along the way and was great to support the communities. Only downside was a deeply unpleasant encounter with the horrid man who runs Everton Caravan and Tourist Park (avoid at all costs!). A bit of asking around town confirmed he is a known A-hole.
But it was a blessing in disguise as we found a wonderful spot just 2kms out of the town called Pioneer Bridge, which has free camping beside a heavenly water hole - so perfect on the hot afternoon.
Ride up to Beechworth the next morning was tough but so worth it.

We chose the Wangaratta to Milawa section of the Trail as it was the flatest. We are not seasoned bike riders but this was a great path. In total we completed over 40klms return trip which was relatively easy going for us. Some lovely country side. You could also walk sections of the Trail. A really good fun activity for the whole family just pick which section and how experienced you are at riding. We will do another section some time in the future.

Great bike path, suitable for mountain bikes. We rode from Wangarrata to Gapsted (50k and virtually all up hill) We virtually had the trail to ourselves only seeing maybe 10 people all day. The path in most parts is long and straight taking you mainly through fields, so not the best views but a defiant challenge for the final 10k climbing to 350 mtrs.

This trail is one of the best in the country, amazing scenery, great facilities along the way, The trail surface is excellent. It is a great challenge, and a very rewarding experience to ride the whole trail, but also can be done in stages. Saddle up and go for it.

All of the comments about the quality and beauty of this trail we found true. Breathtaking views of the country side and snow capped mountains.
It’s pretty much all downhill from Beechworth to Everton and took us just over an hour.
We were a little unprepared for the 12km climb from Everton to Taylor’s Gap about 3km from Gapsted Wines. There are no rest stops until Taylor’s Gap and it’s all uphill with no coasting breaks. It took two fit seniors 2 hours to make the trip from Everton to Gapsted.
We’re sure more regular bikers would not find it a challenge but children and social riders be prepared 😊
The lunch at Gapsted was superb as was they Bus and Bike return to Beechworth!

Constructed on a former narrow range rail line this track starts in the centre of Wangaratta, leads through some flood plains before splitting. The more remote, steeper but shorter part up to Beechworth winds up throu beautiful eucalyptus bush and old goldfields. The longer part up to Bright then more or less follows the scenic Ovens Valley with plenty of opportunity to stop at wineries, coffees and small towns. Great activity at any time of the year! Down from Beechworth is pure fun!

This was my first multi-day bike trip carrying my camping stuff and it was amazing. We had a group of 8 people and cycled over 4 days from Wangaratta - Milawa - Everton - Myrtleford - Bright. We took the train from Melbourne, and vline bus/train combo back from Bright.
It was an amazing trip and I think most people who can ride a bike could complete this trail without any problem. People in our group had a basic level of fitness but none of us cycle regularly. In our route there was only one noticeable hill between Everton and Myrtleford. I could only ride to Myrtleford so cannot comment on the last section of trail.
Some highlights/tips:
- Eating/drinking- Brown Brothers, Gapstead winery, Milawa Cheese Factory, Happy Valley Hotel
- Swimming locations: Stan Allen reserve (near Oxley/Milawa), pioneer bridges (near Everton), Nimo Bridge reserve (Myrtleford)
- The Bike Hire Company (Beechworth) was fantastic for a shuttle bus service across the whole area
- avoid Everton. There’s a general store, camp ground and pub. The camp ground was nice but food options were very limited especially as there’s no fridge in the campground.

Oops sorry. We stayed at different areas and met at the Beechworth part. We parked at both Beechworth and Everton and then taxied back to pick up cars etc. As we needed the trailer to collect the bikes. The 2nd day we we dropped of at Everton and we did the last part. The person with the trailer did not do that part so dropped us off. The others left their cars at the Everton end of the trail and were taken back to pick them up.

Is there a more desirable direction to the cycle M2M ? It seems Bright to Wangaratta has less elivation but most people seem to do it the other way?
Also, have people got experience using Busabout or any other transfer company to reunit us with our car
Thanks

I liked the way we did it, Wangaratta to Bright, as you do the nicest section last. We went via Milawa, having driven to Beechworth for some cycling around there on a separate day. We did it in two days, staying a night in Myrtleford, so we could have a good look around Milawa and generally take our time.
We used Busabout to take our luggage to Myrtleford and then Bright, and afterwards take all 11 of us, luggage and bikes back to Wangaratta. We found them to be on time and efficient.

We are thinking of doing the ride from bright to Wangaratta, with hopes to make it a bit easier on my partner who does not ride a lot . . Any thoughts about this ??
And hoping to do our first night on the trail at Beechworth .
Also
Any ideas about a shuttle / bus / taxi from Everton to Beechworth for us and our bikes , so we can avoid the steep climb . At the end of our first day ?
Thanks
Matty

We are planning on riding the trail during the first week of August. This is the only time I can organise to have off work.
Just my wife and I who are regular riders of 20kms with the occasional 30kms.
I'm planning on riding from wangaratta to beechworth on day 1, beechworth to mertyleford on day 2 and then into bright on day 3.
Any idea of how cold it will be and if this schedule looks ok?
We are planning on staying in hotels and having layers to keep us warm.

Sounds good! I agree with the other comments regarding clothing, it will be very chilly at that time and possibly a bit windy too. You are in snow country the closer you get to Bright so layers are a must, warm gloves essential! Berry farms are usually only open in summer, unless they have a restaurant/cafe that operates annually. It's a shame you're not there in Autumn, no beautiful colours to see in August! Enjoy the pedal and make sure you write a review about riding the trail in winter for others to see in the future.

Hi Rita B
We recently did the trail but arranged for the car to be picked up by family. Others on the trip recommended the Bike Bus, through North East Coachlines. Worth a google.

Hi there. We are a family of 4 looking to do the murray to mountains rail trial the week before Christmas, this year. I am hoping we could get some advice on a few things
1.Is it really hot at this time of year? we have two children aged 8 and 12. We wnat it to be fun!
2. Where is the best place to start. We thought maybe Day 1 Beechworth- Wang Day 2 Wang to Mytlerford Day 3 Mytelford to Bright. Or are best getting the bus back to Beechworth Day 1 and the heading to Mytleford from Beechworth? This just seemed like a lot of messing about with transfers?
3. If we stay at beechowrth where are able to leave the car?
Thanks so much

Hi,
The week before Xmas is risk- it could be hot or it could be very pleasant. My experience is that January and February are the hot months and December's average max are 25-29 degrees depending where you are on the rail trail.
Most places seem quite relaxed about you leaving a car while you do the rail trail- just ring ahead.
You may wish to start from Beechworth and get the benefit of a good downhill, particularly with a young family. As previous writers have mentioned, some operators will pick you and your family up with bikes from Bright and take you back to Beechworth. However, for 4 people this would be expensive, I would be inclined for one to catch the much cheaper public bus back from Bright, pick up the car and then drive to Bright to pick up everyone else and bikes- then perhaps do some more touring around there by car?? Public bus timetable is on the web just google "vline Beechworth" to get the timetable. If there is room (and there often is) you may be able to take everyone and the bikes on the public bus. Why not turn up and see- if no capacity just one of you go and get the car, etc, while the others enjoy Bright .
Have a great trip!

Hi I'm planning a family bike ride in late November from Wangarratta to Bright for 8 adults mostly experienced bike riders (or at least hopefully will be by then!)
Commencing Saturday morning and completing ride Sunday.
Day 1. Wangarratta to Myrtleford with a coffee stop somewhere half way. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Continue on to Myrtleford for lunch, again suggestions for here too.
Day 2. Myrtleford to Bright with a coffee stop halfway at Porpunkah railway cafe.
We will be staying in Bright and accommodation is booked.
If there is any companies that provide a bike carrying service between Bright and Wangarratta this would be helpful too. It's a shame the bus company doesn't operate on weekends.
Thanks for any advice you can provide. Regards Val

Hi there,
We used Geoff Scott from Bus a Bike ph 0409806458 when we rode the Rail Trail in April. He was reliable, flexible and easy to deal with. I think it worked out to be about $12 pp to transport 8 adults + bikes from Bright to Myrtleford, and the same from Wangaratta to Beechworth.
The advantage of riding from Wangaratta to Bright is that you are riding towards the best scenery. It may be a little more uphill, but not noticeably so. Our group of over 50's very social riders did it very comfortably.
We stopped at both Chakra in Myrtleford and at Gapsted Winery - would recommend both.
We also stopped at the Berry Farm just outside Myrtleford - yummy smoothies, berry pancakes, icecreams etc.
Would also agree with David re: starting at Beechworth - it's 15km all downhill!
We did the Rail Trail in 3 days: Day 1: Beechworth to Wang, bus back to Beechworth; Day 2 : Beechworth to Myrtleford Day 3: Myrtleford to Bright.
Have fun!

Hi, is anyone able to tell me whether the trail from Rutherglen to Wahgunyah is 9km there and then 9km back, or whether it is a 9km around trip? Thankyou :)
